I use the same rods for froggin' that I do for jiggin'... Only difference is the line and reel...

I look for the quick tip to be able to walk it and cast it a long way... But lotsa backbone for gettin' em up and out of the slop... If you can cast it and walk it with a stiff tip, that is probably better for the horsin'!!!

Fastest reel you can find... I use a Quantum Burner 7.0-1 ratio...

I use a Quantum Dean Rojas signature series rod. I love the action of it. I am sure that there are other rods out there though, and other people will give you there opinion too.

I just got done building a Lamiglas 7'2" split grip heavy action rod for Frogs and have to tell you it is a beast, Plenty of back bone and will cast a frog far into the slop. Frist tried it out at Clear lake to put it through it's test and it fished great, When you stick a bass with that blank it stays stuck. Steve : :D

Thanks Guys for the info I have a New Shimano Metanium MG 7 that is a 7:1 gear ratio that I was thinking about trying on the frog's I got it for top water, jerk baits and blades and have not used it. I'm thinking that I'll put 50lb braid on it because it only holds 120yds of 12lb test, unless I can get away with alittle lighter braid :?

As for a rod it looks like I'll have to go shoping before I head up there or when I get there  at least I now have a feeling for what I'm looking for in a rod

Thanks Kirk

Hey Kirk - Take a serious look at the Dobyns Champion 735C. Great rod for frogs. If you want one just a bit stouter, look at the 736. Both great rods, cast a frog a mile and have the backbone to get them out of the slop!

Gator, It looks like I'm going to be in the Extreme Outdoorsman for a few things when I get there do they have the Dobyns Line of rods ?? I my just wait till I get up there and look at them before I buy something.

Also what other brands do they have?? I have a rod I think I can get by with if I have to but I really think I'm going to buy a rod just for frogs

Extreme Outdoorsman does carry the Dobyns rod line. If they do not have the 735 or the 736, Gene at the Hook (just a little further down Hwy 4 behind the CentroMart) also carries the Dobyns rods and I know that he has the 735 in stock!!

Gator's right. The 735 is sweet for the frogs. It's kinda a multipurpose rod also. Throws a buzzbait sweet also...

I am not sure about ALL of the rod lines they carry but they do have a good selection in the Hook. I can't personally speak for Extreme as I haven't been in there in a while. YOu can give them a call and they can let you know what lines they carry.

If you can get your hands on a loomis 864 it is the best frog rod I have ever used. otherwise I would look at the lamiglas tournament frog rod that barrack designed. Match that up with a 7:1 daiwa zillion and 65# power pro and you are ready to go.

Kirk,
Hook carries a decent variety, not as many as I would like to see, but inventory cost money. You'll find Lamiglas, Powell, Shimano, G.Loomis as well as others. Decent selection, but not really great, probably a better selection in Anahiem (AM). I love the XC725 Lamiglas I bought, but I was fishing an old broomstick prior to that.

I'm sure that 725 is a good rod.. but if you've ever fished with or talked to Bobby you would quickly learn he's a straight up horse power kind of guy.... his advice to me several years ago was the Lami 797 w 65lb braid in the slop and a Lami 806 w 50lb braid for open water stuff both w a high speed reel. I read somewhere a ways back in Bass West that Ish was using the 797 too.... The 797 is a big heavy rod, but once you get used to it, you'll have a hard time going back.... the soft tip on some other rods is what a lot of people says helps with tight accurate casts,,,, the 797 has no tip to speak of so you'll end up pitching yer frog w it in tight places.... but the horsepower of that bad boy makes it a awsome froggin tool.. Plus a great rod for punching heavy mats...

Dobyns 735c in open water and a Dobyns 766Flip in the heavy stuff are my choice. Great rods.

I do like the lami 806 the best, the 725 is great for in tight pitching frogs under gangways and bulkheads here in disco.
I got the dobyns 736c a week ago, the butt of the rod is a bit long for my comfort. It'll get a jig or heavy T-rig. The dobyns rods look sick. I put a okuma alumina "blue" reel on it, just bad a$$.

Im still learning what feels good and what I can feel fish with, so I buy whatever brand, dosnt matter to me. I'm a tackle whore.
