Daiwa Advantage Reels - Any opinions?

Post by Gator »

Anybody have any experience with these? I am a diehard Old School Curado guy but I came across a good deal on these reels and wanted some feedback before I purchase them. They are 5 Bearing/1 Roller bearing, Model is the TDA150H.

Appreciate any info!!

I am the same way. i have like 15 old curados and still have them ticking. However the new prices of reels led me to go elsewhere to discover. I have only had my first advantage reel for one season so far, but I really enjoy it. It works really well, smooth casting, great drag, and so far has stood up to what i put it through. I am looking at possibly getting a few more off of ebay. I got mine for like $80 shipped and it was brand new.

I recomend them.

My oldest son for his last birthday wanted and bought himself the Diawa Scorpoion -- It has 3 more ball bearings for the same price and the outside mag control -- unlike the Shimano.

It is a very nice reel.
You know, we always called each other goodfellas. Like, you'd say to somebody: "You're gonna like this guy; he's all right. He's a goodfella. He's one of us." You understand? We were goodfellas, wiseguys.

You will love the TDA reel. I have used them for the last three years and being a small guy the reels fit in my hands perfect.

I have 25 of them and wouldn't trade them for nothing.

daiwa TDA in my opinion is at the low end of a long list of reels. Of the reels I have the TDA is the only reel I ever bought then later sold. Now before all the Daiwa fans and those sponsered by them wet yourselves, this is just my opinion, and from my personal experience I think their product is inferior to shimano in almost every class of reel.

I almost blew milk outta my nose, Dan!!! I don't care who you are that's funny right there.

I have a Diawa Viento that I really like (although I rarely ever use the "twitchin' bar" except as a flippin switch) and Jason just bought a used 153HST that is very nice as well. But I have tried the TDA150 and was not that impressed, nor am I impressed with another Daiwa that Jason has (a lower priced model).

But I will say that I recently had the opportunity to fish both versions of the new AbuGarcia Revo's for a day and I will say that those reels will be the next ones I buy!!

I've got 6 of the TDA's (3 HST's,2 H's,and one P) they fit my hand very well. The only thing I've found that is more comfortable are the 2 Revo Sx's I have (however they don't handle 20lb flouro well). If I were you I'd spend the extra money for the HST model for a higher gear ratio, better breaking, and more bearings they are noticeably different. The H and P I use for cranks and chatters and the HST's for worms/jigs.

If I remember correctly Dobyns was using the HST's for awhile.....now they have the Zillion

I don't know about the "WET YOURSELF" Daiwa remark. The TDA's are fine, I don't know what you were using them for, but they work just fine. I just recently bought 2 curado D's, a Chronarch B and an MG, and a Zillion and also own the TDA 153 ST and 150. . I like the Shimano's but for castability the Daiwa wins hands down.

I hestitate to mention this. I have a tendency to set hard at times with both hands. I have stripped the main shaft where you attach the handle on 3 different Advantadges right where the nut screws down the handle. To be fair I have also bent the handle on a quantum energy reel from a similiar action. I guess I use too much right hand, while still holding the reel, on my hooksets. Daiwa/local tackle shops have been wonderful taking care of the problem and other than that particular problem the reels are wonderful.

Noluk,

I am glad to hear I am not the only one who has had this problem with the Daiwa TDA HST handles. I have went through seven reels where the handle nut has stripped the shaft and now the handle wobbles or won't stay on the shaft in the past two years. The ones I bought straight from Tackle Shops and I remember which store I bought them from were easily replaced. I currently have four I don't remember where I bought and are setting in my truck for shipping to the Daiwa Service Center. I just can't seem to Get Round2It :( . The H model uses a different handle configuration and doesn't have this problem.

I absolutely love these reels except for handle issue! I had one of there old High End TDZ reels do the same thing 4 or 5 years ago :( I guess they the need to make their shaft of a little more harder material.

I have one that I've been using of and on. It is probably my least favorite reel behind the Viento and a curado. It does cast very well, but my hands start cramping if I'm holding it for too long. It's a little heavier too.

I'm probably going to start moving into more Diawas. I like that there are the brake dials for versatility. Especially on a budget.

Overall though, I would say that you could probably get a better reel with a little bit more $.

Gator,

The new Advantage reels are reel nice. They made changes to them cosmetically and internally. The biggest change that I saw is it now has the swept handle like the Zillion. Do yourself a favor and give them a try.

I'm sure it is going to do real well for Daiwa.

I personally own two, and I'm a die hard Shimano guy myself. I have had no problems with them. I like the way they feel in my hand, and they cast pretty good too. IMO if you got a good deal for them then buy them!

If you are shopping reels, I believe you must check out the Extreme Baitcaster's from BPS. They are on sale right now for only $64.99 and come in 3 different retrieve rates and right or left hand. I personally have 7 of them and have never had a single problem with any of them. The new one's are 7 bb's and I will put them against any reel at 3 times the price!! I believe they are the best value for an everyday reel and they will take the punishment. Smooth and they cast a mile......or two! Just my 2 cents worth......NEXT!
