Ultimate Match Fishing

Post by DTURNER »

Did anyone catch the episode this weekend Larry Nixon and Gabe Bolivar? If so, my question is this. Nixon has 4-5 rods all with texas rigs and proceeds to put on a clinic off the back of the boat. All the while Gabe is on the front with spinning rod in hand watching this as Nixon keeps nailing fish. Gabe catches rat after rat (on a drop shot I think?) Next quarter Nixon goes to his honeyhole and proceeds to bang a 4,5 and 6. Gabe still with spinning rod in hand catches 1 fish and Nixon pulls up trolling motor and blows the spot out by doing donuts.
Gabe is from So. Cal. right? Where we fish 80% plastics and absolutely love when we DONT have to worm with 6lb test on a drop shot. I just dont understand. :?:
Thump,thump.......aw there he is! Get the net!

We do love our plastics here, but Nixon is one of the best with a worm.

I think he said once that he was getting to a point where he had a hard time keeping up with the younger fisherman but if there was a worm bite going on then he had a great chance (he won an FLW event)

nobody does it better

If it were me getting beat down like that (and it has happened)
I would be asking what he was doing and to show me how

Kudos to Gabe for not switching to whatever Nixon was fishing.

Imagine if you were Nixon in this scenario... worked your tail off to find this bite and catch the fish.. then from the back of your boat - your competitor ties on the same bait as you and then tries to compete against you.

That'd be just like the guy in the boat next to you on your homelake copying whatever you do to catch fish. Fact is Gabe stuck with what HE knew and what his best pattern was... As great as Larry Nixon is.. and he is great... I bet it was hard for Gabe not to tie on a bubba bait and go to work.

So my hat is off to Gabe for not doing exactly what most of us hate essentially poaching a bite from another angler!

I watched it twice. The show is a good lesson for co-anglers in Pro events. Gabe had very little practice because of making the Tour cut before the show and Larry has fished that lake so many times he needs no practice. It seemed Gabe was not properly prepared for the format. He kept asking about rules and he totally messed up when he reeled in on the whistle during his bedfish quarter. Nothing like old fashioned wisdom to put em in the boat. Gabe is a quick school. It wont happen again if he gets the chance.

Hey Tom , Gabe actualy did try to fish Nixens pattern even after Nixen blew it out . To make it even better Nixen answered with another 4 to 5 pounder from the back . That totally brain screwed Gabe . Pretty funny .
