Rod/Reel recommendations for kids

My son is turning 6 in a few weeks and I wanted to get him a new rod reel combo since his Spiderman spin cast combo got messed up on our last outing, he accentually stepped on the reel and messed it up. The pole is still usable and he just wants a reel for it but I figured I would get the whole combo that way if something happens to the rod we have a spare. So my question is can anyone recommend a spin cast combo that would be good for a young child (durable) and not cost me a ton of money.

I don't know about a combo but if you want him to have a nice rod that he'll use for years, give him an Ugly Stik Lite 6’ medium-casting rod. It’s an excellent rod for the price, durability and feel. Cabela’s carries the 6’ medium casting rods. Spin cast reels are not good on line but I have had decent luck with Abu and some Zebco reels. Diawa Goldcast is a nice spincast reel but it's $50 dollars.

Get him a Zebco combo.

Head for Swell-Mart and get a 5½ ft Med action rod and a Zebco closed face spinning real. Put some decent 10# line on and go fishing. He'll be able to handle this, and use it for many years to come. Shouldn't cost much more than $ 20-30 for everything.

I agree with the Zebco combo..You can't beat them for the price..Besides once he get used to using the thumb release on a spincast reel, it is an easier change over to regular baitcasters..They both cast the same..

I have both of my boys using Hank Parker Lightning rods 6' medium and 5'6" pistol grip, about $35 on sale, good price and good sensitivity for the young ones, also they both fight over the rhino spincast for $25 at wally world more than the zebco. 10# pline and a wacky rigged senko or white blades. They catch em all day.

I would suggest putting a Zebco 33 on any shorter graphite rod you may already have or find a cheaper graphite rod in the 5.5 to 6 foot length. My other suggestion is to stay away from the Zebco 33 Platinum reel. Not woth the extra money. Get the original Zebco 33. Also try some of the better quality underspins. They are a push button reel designed like a spinning reel. My kids drop shot with these. Now that they are a little older any spinning reel works well for drop shotting since all they are doing is dropping straight down. My big question is, when do I introduce the baitcaster? This would simplify my life greatly. My oldest is 8. When he masters the baitcaster, I see team tournaments in our future. I can't wait.

Mike, if your son is good at casting the 33, he should be able to cast a baitcaster..Pick one of your lighter weighted ones and a good rod and take an afternoon in the backyard with him learning how to cast it..When my youngest daughter was 8, she was using a spincast and wanted to learn baitcasting, so I broke out one of my old Shimano Bantams and we went for it..She had some initial problems because she thought you had to cast really hard, once I convinced her she didn't have to try and cast for a mile, everything was easy from that point on..I only had to cut the line off twice from outrageous back lashes..I wish I had had the internet then, because I would have learned to put tape on the spool down about 60 0r 70 feet and the backlash wouldn't go past that..Kids can and do learn guickly if they are really interested..If they aren't ready yet, just don't push it..
