Huddelston Delux Shad????????????

Post by Guy Kelley »

I have been considering buying some of Huddelston Shad for fishing Clear Lake. Just wondering what color to throw and rate of fall ?

With all the swim bait fisher men who are using em at the lake can anyone recommend what would be the best??

I like the look and feel of em and think they would be an excellent in between size swim bait to use. As I experiment around and move up the ladder with the various size and types of swim baits to use.

Anything about rigging em different or just out of the box as they are?

I plan to use a heavy 7' rod with 20 pound floro and a shimmono super free reel at a 6 to 1 rate.

Just crank em in or is there more i should do?

Any information you could pass along would be great !!!!

thanks

The 20 lb line is a bit heavy. Unless you are flipping then in thick stuff. 12 lb line makes the bait run and feel better.

There is always more you should do Guy. Wake the little thing and break surface now and then, walk it slow on the bottom, jig it, Try to trigger strikes. The hit feels just like a hudd trout hit.
Don't forget to clean off the hook, it will have some color coating on it.
Best of luck.

Don.

I would stay away from the heavy rod and I would use 12 pound line for these. I use my 7 foot senko rod ( any manufacturer). I have caught a few fish over 5 using this set up and it works really well.

Remember try different things and dont put it down you will catch fish you just have to keep grinding.

I have some of the older slower retrieve Citica reals and I like them better for my swim bait fishing. I tend to not real them in as fast.

Has anyone fished these on the Delta? I have them but have not fished them yet. Should I do the same thing as you guys are talking about doing at Clear Lake? I know I should experiment, but the fact that I don’t get out too much makes me kind of inpatient. Thanks,

Nick

I cant stop throwing this bait. Ive cought a TON of fish on it. IO just lock it in my hand and throw it until I get bit. I throw this bait on my frog rod with 15lb test. Like I said Ive cought a TON of fish on it and havent had a problem with the fish throwing the bait. Only problem is, you'll go through a lot of them. But hey whatever works right?

Huddleston recommends the15lb mono or fluro for this bait. I've used 12-14lb fluro and I prefer the 12lb. I like to use the ROF 12 at Clear Lake and have caught numeros fish with all different retrieves, fast, slow, yo-yo etc. My favorite colors for Clear Lake are Green, Black and Lavender. As Don noted clean the hook. Although I believe this early production issue is resolved check to ensure your hook is clean of the plastic finish. Also someone on here gave me some advice to slightly and carefully bend the hook open just a bit, I think that is decent advice as the hook gap can be quite narrow.

Yep, I do that to my Hudd trout baits also. I bend the hook open so that it is even with the back of the bait. Out of the pack they come pointed down to the back of the bait just a bit.

Good luck!
