What's a back seat to do, BASS event

Post by rickd »

I’m fishing my first co angler event at the BASS the 26th. What is a guy to do in the back seat this time of year when a pro spends his time on a sight fish? I would hope that the pro wouldn’t spend more the ½ hour on her and I’m sure it’s case by case. Talked with a few guys about this and most said drop shot / senco and the rest said bring your knitting gear…

Any suggestions?

Don't forget the venerable splitshot rig, try a 4 inch green lizard, Fan cast it and throw to every piece of cover you can reach, especially out toward deeper water.

Good luck

Fish hard!

They guys telling you to bring knitting gear will never do well and are out before they get in the boat. On the Delta any area where you are sight fishing has other fish around. Some co-angler will use the fact the pro is sight fishing as an excuse and just sit there. The ones who will be making the cut will be working every square inch of water around them with every bait they have. Senko and drop shot are both excellent choices. A frog is also something I would have handy. I have drawn the guys who sit down and do nothing while I am working a bed. I will tell them their are fish around and to keep fishing, but they just give up. Why try to help someone who will not help themself.

If the pro is concentrating on a bed, you've got the entire periphery to fish! And you'll have a chance to try alot of different baits and techniques. Blades, cranks, jigs, topwater, drop shot, wurmin', you name it. On the Delta I doubt that he could have the boat positioned in such a way that there wasn't something near by that held some fish that you can cast to. Don't even let the knitting logic in your head - The defeatist attitude is too easy to assume. Then again you could always give me your spot if you wanna stop now!

I fished w/ a pro who sight fished all day @ the everstart event. While he was trying to catch his visable fish, I was loading the boat from the back. Like the others have said, if there is one bed there are many more around. Just keep your line wet and you will do just fine. Fishinfoolio

I just love it ........ Bring it on!!

i know the guy is going to be sitting still and not moving much, which as everyone's said, gives YOU the chance to slow down and fan cast a lot of water to catch all those fish he's passing up.

So many times I feel Pro's feel the need (including me when i'm in the front) to rush around and find only those fish that strike fast, whereas if you just slow down and fish the areas you know fish are in, you'll get those bigger, better fish. That's exactly what those bedding areas are.

Bring it on ............ you fish beds for 1 fish, while i flip, pitch, drag and twitch a limit out the back.

Works for me!

Good Luck!

Don't sweat the small stuff...

As the others have pointed out there is plenty of fishable water in the Delta. The Pro sight fishing there is actually an advantage to the backseater. You have the opportunity to work an area and find an aggresive male. Have your topwater ready. Try fishing behind a Pro who is going down a bank on high with a crank bait, thats tough. I'll also be in the backseat next week. Good luck....Barry
