Wake Board drama at Orwood Saturday
Wake Board drama at Orwood Saturday
The Delta Riders Association scheduled a Wake Board tournament at Orwood Resort on Saturday. They intended to perform in Werner Cut from Orwood to Discovery Bay. They designated boater members for tournament traffic controll with signs who intended to impede and stop boaters while wakeboarders made runs down the cut. Werner cut and parts of Indian Slough are are no tow zones on weekends and holidays.
1. Wake Boarders have a right to waive laws?
2. Wake Boarders have a right to impede traffic on navitagable water ways?
The Sherriff got wind of the idea and showed up at 8:10 AM and announced no dice! Wake Boarders got in his face and he called back up. Seven Sherriff units (one K9) showed up and stayed untill 6 PM. They turned Wake Board boats away! The Wake Board organizers said they had a permit and a letter from Mary Piepho (sp?) a Contra Costa County Supervisor waiveing the no tow restriction for them. Mary Piepho is the Supervisor who inflamed all the wake boarders and water skiers by authoring the no tow regulations. Now she is trying to kiss up to them by waiving a law for special interest and politics. No way a single commissioner can waive a law for a special interest group! Additionally a large Motorcycle ride for charity planned to stop at Orwood for breakfast and booze. The 150 bikers got a glimpse of the Sherriff army decided to start drinking somewhere else. Grumbling as they thundered off to Bethel bars.
The next scheduled event is a bare foot water ski exhibition featuring 100 mph bare footers in Werner cut. The no tow zone! Again organizers plan to impede and controll your right to fish or navigate those areas while they have a tournament.
Why can't we restrict boating during Bass tournaments? How would that go over? Violate speed, saftey regulations during tournaments given a politicians desire for our vote? I recommend that you send a protest to the County Commissioner and let them know how that works for you.
The tournament organizer is beside himself over the sherriff shutting it off. He claims they lost $2500.00. I asked how so? Well he said they had to give away the prizes in a free raffle! HUH? You chose to give them away not had to! I asked him why they did'nt schedule it for the Old River, Middle River etc where it is legal to tow? That got him into a circular argument about tournament organizers having a valid permit. The Sherriff hadn't issued a permit to tow in a no tow zone. He continued his circle. What right do you have to impede me from boating an area while they make runs? The circle continued.
These idiot boarders will bring political pressure to bear and may get special use permits in the future. If so Bass boaters and Family boaters will be denied access or have limited access to certain water ways because the politicians will cave in to pressure. Apply your pressure! Send a letter to the Sherriff and to the County Commissioners!

Dear Commissioner Piepho,
I support the no tow zone in Werner cut and Indian slough on the Delta. I support the right to hold tournaments on the Delta.
I do not support the concept of lifting or waiving no tow zones or speed zones for tournaments or special interests. I do not support any tournament that restricts my free unimpeded passage on waterways of the Delta.
According to the Delta Riders Association your office sent a letter to them authorizing them to hold a Wake Board Tournament at Orwood Resort on Saturday August 18th, 2007. Were you aware that the organizers planned to violate the NO TOW zoning regulations your board enacted recently? Were you aware that organizers had designated boats with signs and had intentions to impede passage of other law abiding (non towing) recreational boaters while they competed? Can you cite County Code allowing you to waive no tow zone regulations unilaterally? Did you and can you empower the Delta Riders Association to enforce or regulate boating traffic or did they self authorize? Can you cite code giving you the authority to authorize Wake Board tournaments?
Are you aware that a Bare Foot Water Ski Exhibition is planned for the near future in Werner Cut? The organizers plan 100 mph competitions in a the no tow zone you enacted. What or whose authority granted a permit or waived the no tow regulations for that event? Should my right to boat or fish in Werner Cut be restricted by that event?
I am not in favor of any regulation or authorization that restricts my right to boat or fish the Delta when and where I choose. I oppose any authorization for tournament participants or organizers to regulate or enforce boating traffic. Please be informed that my next vote will reflect your position on this issue.

Dear Sheriff Rupf,
I would like to compliment your office for the actions Your Department and Deputies took at Orwood Resort on August 18th 2007.
The Delta Riders Association had scheduled a Wake Board tournament to be conducted in Werner Cut. Werner Cut is a no tow zone during weekends. In addition they had self-authorized members (equipped with signs) of the association for boating traffic enforcement. I believe that it would be unlawful for a member of such an organization to regulate boat traffic. One of the organizers named Scott warned me that they would stop and regulate me and other traffic giving right of way to Competitors violating the law.
I object to such self-appointed regulation or restriction while boating the Delta.

The delta is filled with thousands of miles of waterways and your worried about one channel for one day? What kind of Bed matress do you sleep on???? Statistics show that most cranky people have a crappy matress. I think its time for some of you guys to get new beds.

Maybe we stop all the Indy Car road races, Off Road racing the in Desert, he!! why stop there! Let's make sure there are no parades on our streets, I might want to drive down that street! Give them a break, at least you'll know where they are that day while your several miles away enjoying the calmer then normal (because thier all over watching the wake boarders) weekend. It's a BIG sandbox but you still need to share.
I say let them have thier 1,2,5, 10 days a year, there are plenty more days to fish.

To heck with public safety and the safety of the ignorant competitors who are wake boarding in that slough. Oh sorry I mean the wakeboarders who thought they were gonna wake board in Werner Cut......
Yes of all the navigatable water, Werner was the best choice ? Thats the joke of the day.
I guess he COCO County Sherriff got it all wrong. My hat's off to the Deputies. Sorry I missed the show.
BTW......I have a sleep # bed, a SIX is my favorite.

You wakeboarders don't own the water either, you just make it
unpleasant, unsafe and noisy. I will say your chicks are hot.

The rain is a comming and so are your boat covers.

It's a Public Safety Issue. Your examples all take that into account and plan for it...gimme a break.

Having a contest on a channel that is monitored at both ends is unsafe??????? Dude you need to get rid of that #6 and try 69, then you might not be so cranky.... Bass Fisherman dont own the delta either. Everybody has a right to its waterways and there are plenty of Bass tourneys, whats the problem with a wake contest. It was monitored..... I have 2 boats, a Ranger and a Mastercraft. One I do big airs and flips behind, the other I catch 5-9lb bass.....Its not all about you.

Those who call 911 and Those who come when 911 is called.
You should continue to call 911.
If it was so safe, so organized and yadda yadda blah blah...
why did it get shut down ?
The problem isn't with the wakeboard contest. It's the manner in which it was apparently being conducted. That being said, who gives a dang about what you own or what you catch ? Turn down your bumping stereo and stay on topic.....
I love the wakeboard, skiboat, ciggarette boater crowd...We have the right to use the water and run big wakes onto a delapidated leeve system. Causing unsafe navigation for other boaters with your wakes and unsafe U-turns. Pulling your fellow boarders through unsafe, narrow channels all while thinking is my music loud enough.
What right do you have to force onto others your unsafe boating behavior ?
Your 25 speakers are clouding your common sense.

Interesting. I think you nailed it right here. 1, 2, 5, 10 days a year and it grows from there. Funny thing is we as bass fisherman use the resource all year long and not once have stopped your wakeboats from using the resource at the same time.
Only a freakin' idiot thinks some BS letter from a county supervisor is gonna void everyone else's rights to use the waterway. And if Mary Piepho actually did what is claimed here she ought to be reprimanded severely. Who in the hell does she think she is?

Re: Wake Board drama at Orwood Saturday
They shut down the Sacramento river to boat traffic every year for boat races, wakeboard events in the Old Sac area along the Delta King which is A NO WAKE ZONE. Why is it OK for these boats to run at seeds over 100mph and wake board boats that put off 4 foot swells behind there boat. But any other time if you barely get on plane here come the PO PO lights going ticket book ready to write you up. IF the area is A NO WAKE ZONE then they should have to go some where else just like the rest of us have to. Maybe the B.A.S.S. should pay for the same permits so that all those guys can run wide open every where. NO OFF LIMIT RUN WIDE OPEN WOOOWOOOO lets see how many people would go for that?????? Could you imagine the call the police would get. 911 what is your emergency??Ya about 100 Dang Bass Boat just flew through our marina area at over 60mph and our boats are just banging around and getting realy damaged. 911 operator sorry sir but they have A SPECIAL PERMIT that gives them the right to speed all they want and to stop you from leaving your docks if they are catching fish there so please do not bother them. Thank you and have A nice day sir.

Re: When did we get so many whiners fishing the Delta
Every year for as long as I can remember they have run the 5 zone in Piper for the Frozen Bun Run. The Sheriffs are in attendance and the pull boat pulls right through the 5 zone. Boat traffic in piper is resticted. This has been taking place before many of you even knew what a bass was.
While I am not a big wakeboard fan and do not appreciate their loud music, they have as much right to the water as we do. We hold competition on public water ways all over the country and the Delta every weekend. We effectivly restrict ramps as we have taken up the entire parking lot before most recreational boats can launch. To most recreational boats bass tournament are a big pain in the azz. We are not always the safest bunch running the Delta at 50-70MPH, passing skiiers, running to close to anchored boats without dropping to 5MPH. Those of us living in a glass house should no throw rocks.
If a group needs a venue for a boat race, ski competition, or tri-athelon I see no problem with them restricting boat traffic in a small area for such events provided it is done properly. There are a few rules that would make this less impactful on other users. The area of closure should be marked with signs a week or more in advance. There should be signs at launch ramps in the area telling of the restrictions/Detours. The events should be operated in a safe manner. Closure of the area can help with that. The closure should not restrict movement. This is where this event may have gone wrong. If they set up between Disco and Orwood they could have hurt Orwoods business.
Now, guys quit yer bitchin and moanin. You sound like a bunch of old ladies. Help them understand how do do it correctly and minimize the impact. Always treat others as you would like to be treated. Very simple.
Bruiser, your comment of there are "Those who call 911 and those who come" has to be the most foolish thing I have ever heard. Seriously, So if you are a law enforcement officer you would not call 911 when your wife has a medical emergency? Think about what you said for a moment as I doudt you are totally self sufficient. If you are a public servant you might want to remember who pays your salary and climb off your high horse.
If it is safety we want we could restrict boat speeds on the Delta to 35MPH, close it down when winds are in excess of 25MPH, or require that all boat occupants wear PFDs. If you don't like sharing your water ways then just grow up and realize that we do not own the waterways.

Re: When did we get so many whiners fishing the Delta
I don't agree that the wakeboarders have as much right to the water as any other group. Given the condition of the levees, and the millions being spent to preserve the integrity of the levees, (remember how boating is stopped completely when the water is high for fear of boat wakes erodiing the levee tops?) ... having folks throw huge wakes is NOT in the best interest of the waterway. There should be a 2' wake limit in the entire delta (excluding shipping channels). The fishing boats aren't the problem. It's the wakeboarders and the huge cruisers trudging along. Not to mention the hoardes of underage drunks blasting around in daddy's wakeboarding boat, with the speakers booming. It's dangerous and the levees don't need it.
Re: When did we get so many whiners fishing the Delta
Haha! God bass fisherman are some crybabies. I'm sure recreational boaters really appreciate when 100 trucks and trailers take up an entire parking lot because of a tourney. I'm sure they appreciate waiting hours to launch their boat becuase of the 100 bass boats waiting to launch. It goes both ways guys. I do both wakeboarding and fishing. I'm not complaining about either, just about the crybabies that feel they have more right to the water than others.

Re: SToned on MV
BBBWAAAHHH!!!!
So how does this differ from your post on ABA. Should we ban all tournaments because some cannot follow the rules? Or should we help them understand how to meet the requirements of their permits?
At the Rally I tried to explain to the person dumping their fish into the casino bay why it was wrong. Maybe I should have had the TD arrested rather than be a liberal.
PS - Call me what you want, but remember there are more recreational boaters than us fishermen. One day we may need them as friends.

Re: When did we get so many whiners fishing the Delta
Old ladies...?? no, just a bunch of washed up guys who can barely stand on the front of the boat with a pedestal seat for 8 hours let alone wakeboard..... I have fished my whole life and wakeboarded since the 90's. I have a wakeboard school and I fish Bass tournaments. I love both. I see the downside in both. There is a downside in most everything in life. Just deal with it and keep movin on. Believe me there are more YAHOO wakeboarders out there than there are Real ones. Power turns are Yahoos, a quick stop and turn around in my own wake is how it should be done. No extra wakes or extra gas or a hold on for life turnaround. But at the same time I was pulling someone and making a big wide turnaround in a small bay next to a 5mph and had a Bass Boat doing 60mph try and run the 5 (it was only a few hundred yards) and didnt see my rider and well....it was the closest my friend has ever been to death. What I am saying is there idiots everywhere. Wakeboarders, Bass fisherman, Basket weavers...its life and we need to get along and bitching about petty stuff isnt a way to live. Or at least for me. I know I am opening myself up for a barrage of internet verbal abuse but..... I see both sides because I am both sides. peace.

Re: When did we get so many whiners fishing the Delta
Well said Terry, I remember once I became a public servant I didnt have to pay taxes any longer. Dewayne your claim of paying "Public Servants" wages is totally out of line. We pay taxes just like you and who are you to think that you own us. Yes we provide a service for a community, yes we do the jobs that others fear to do and are just simply out there night after night protecting your neighborhoods and making sure your loved ones are safe. You should just simply say "Thank You" and be on your way. For I know personally your too much of a coward to do the Job that "Us" public servants sworn to do. I mean if you dont appreciate the Service then make sure you dont call us to either 1 save your house when it is up in flames, 2 call us to report some stupid pidally item was taken from your front lawn. Bottom line is you dont pay my salary and US public servants dont owe you a thing. Ill tell you what, how would you feel if I came and threw rocks at you while you mowed your lawns for a living? Untill your willing to put your self out there in a uniform and serve your community..that means going into burning buildings, arresting gang members, dealing with drug addicts, running towards the sound of gunshots and not away ,like im sure you would, dont feel that you have the right to judge us for we are out there when you are in bed sleeping soundly and worry free. Like I said before just say "Thank You" and carry on with your day.Terry Smith wrote:Dewayne please submit your address so you can have your $3 back for the taxes you pay A year for the "Public Servants" and they will put you on the services no longer needed list.Dewayne wrote: If you are a public servant you might want to remember who pays your salary and climb off your high horse.
Respectfully,
A Public Servant that doesnt receive Dewaynes taxes

Re: When did we get so many whiners fishing the Delta
We absolutely need to share the water... I just wish some people on both sides of this fence would use their head a little.
Bass Fisherman could do the following to help the safety of everyone.
See a wakeboarder - slow down a little - Keep an eye on the boarder and if he hits the water a wave to the driver of the boat to let him know you see his downed rider is always nice.
Stear wide around any boat unloading or loading a person from the water.. and if you communicate via hand signals with the boater you can certainly give them some peace of mine. I know from experience when someone goes down - you really do worry about their safety until you get back to them. So a wave and a point at the downed boarder can do a lot!
Wakeboarders -- when you see a bass boat fishin nearby get as far away from it as possible. Your boats throw HUGE wakes (granted for a reason) and getting slammed into a levy by one of hem when you had a few hundred yards you could have gone further from the bass boat can definitely help.
Wakeboarders -- if you don't have someone in tow - slow down a little when passing a bass boat fishing an area. No need to go 5.... but 35-40 in one of your boats puts up a surfable wave.
Lastly - EVERYONE please observe the 5's!
The water is there for everyone to use... and if they pull one group of us off - it won't be long until the others are banned as well. The fact wakeboarders and bass fisherman bash each other is a joke because we all know the worst culprits are the darn sea-doos and wave runners! Some of those guys have NO FREAKING CLUE...
Also, I think there should certainly be some sort of certification to run any boat or motorized water vehicle!
Prior to Bass Fishing I spent 100's of days on the Colorado River and so-cal lakes Wakeboarding... now I am not sure I am anywhere near the wakeboarding expert BMXer is but, I did enjoy it and will again next time I get a chance to get ont he water with my Sister & Brother in law on their boat... So I do see both sides of this argument.
One last thing - BMXer - your statement about being washed up yada yada yada fisherman... that is far off the topic and outlandish - and I beg to differ.. If I take 5 bass fisherman of my choice and you take 5 wake boarders of your choice and we can play any game you want... Basketball, 5 on 5 football, Baseball/softball all the atheletic gammet throguh golf and bowling! (excluding of course fishing and wake boarding) and I am sure we'll run you. In fact, I can probably get 5 guys together that can take you in a dH race on mtn bikes in Downiville... Granted it might be slightly dangerous to do that.. but, I am sure we'll give you a run! Speaking of that BMXer.. have you tried the DH mountian biking up their? It's off the hook!!!! If you liked BMXing you love the rides up there! 1-3 hours of straight downhill through some pretty technical stuff at 20-35 miles per hour! Give it a try sometime!

Re: When did we get so many whiners fishing the Delta
I agree with Dewayne here. We do not own anything here on the delta and it is an amazing recreational oppurtunity for EVERYONE. I do however wish there was a required class in line to provide new boaters with proper rules and regulations. You can sure tell who are the locals in the river cause with 1000 miles of waterway I seem to always find somewhere without to many interuptions or distractions both on the water and at the launch ramps. Maybe another suggestion is to fish when the boats aren't all stacked up. After work and evenings, early mornings, nights. Anything is better than the cry-babies and haters that keep posting here. Now lets talk fishing.......Thats what were all here for right?

Guys,
Many of my good friends are law officers and firemen. While I have great respect for the work you all perform, I do not appreciate the attitude that there is you and us that was displayed in a couple of your responses. I meant no disrespect for our public service personnel. It is just a fact that tax dollars is what pays our police, fire, teachers, politicians, and goverment workers.
Senko Guy,
You know personally that I am too much of a coward? Please explain. That is a pretty strong statement from someone who knows little to nothing about me or my history. I have been honored by the Secret Service, FBI, and Concord PD for my service as a citizen all for seperate things I have done over the years. My job used to be to support law enforcement for my company. I have made many friends in all levels of law enforcement over the years. I have helped locate kidnaping victims, worked on task forces to bring down Oakland gangs, and testified before many a jury to name a few. I might even have 1 or 2 of the letters of accomodation still around if you would like to see them. I have taken up arms to capture bad guys on two occasions while awaiting the police and have a letter sighting my "bravery" for those actions. I am not one to cower in my house and wait for the police.
I did not mean my original comment as a slight to those who serve our communities. I do appreciate the work that is done wheter it is from police, fire, National Guard, or teachers. I do not however appreciate this attitude that some of you seem to have that if you are not in public service you are a coward. That is stereo typing which can work two ways and is never accurate.
Now, Thank You for your service to our communities. Whining is still whining though.

The really silly part about this is the choice of location
Instead of cutting off navigatable waterways, couldn't they select one of the areas that have 2 parralel sloughs? Like some sections of Holland cut, the sloughs near cruser haven & the railrod tracks, or Victoria slough? That way they can have thier fun and it would'nt effect regular traffic much if at all.
Using the areas around disco is just stupid.

Dewayne,
Your right I do not know you personally or your past, but your comment about "remember who pays your wages" I think is a pretty arogant statement to make towards the people that do put their lives on the line everyday. Its like people think that we in the public service arena dont pay taxes. Yes do we serve our communities, 100%, but to have that thrown in our faces time after time is really ridiculous. Im sure you meant no disrespect, but people need to realize that we do this job for we want to. We try to go out day after day and make our communities safer for the people that reside in them. Lets face it crime is going to continue to happen and we need the public servants out there to control it. We hate it when the innocet are victimized by the scum of society and if the system didnt constantly fight itself, we could probabely put more people in prison, but hey thats the politics of things. Trust me I am a big fan of individuals that support their local police, sheriff and fireman. I just took your statement as one of many attidtudes that i have personally experianced as being YOU feel that you own us just because we work in your city or county. Sorry if I may have attacked you, but those type of statements i feel people need to realize are very disrespectful to US in the public safety community.
Now as far as the wakeboarders, I personally dont care. Your are right and everyone does have the right to be on the water and people just need to use their heads. I mean Im sure the wakeboarders complain about us bass fisherman in our rigs doing 70 + MPH past skiers. The bottom line is boats dont cause accidents, its the people that drive them that do. I used to be the type of person that would be upset at seeing wakeboarders and jet skiers on the lake, but now with maturity I realize that everyone has the right and as long as we are all safe and let that be our first our piority on the water, we should all be able to enjoy the water together.

Re: When did we get so many whiners fishing the Delta
Tom, that was my initial "reaction strike" to the grumps calling out wakeboarders with hot chicks. And although there are plenty of Athletic bass fisherman I think the average guy 5 on 5 thing would result in the bass guys defeated. LOL....but we can try. Get Jeff and few other Tounement killers and i will drag a couple of bass fishing wakeboarders....lol....Sounds like a new Rally....Wakeboarders VS Bassfisherman..... what do wakeboarders (with hot chicks) and bass fisherman have in common on a good day...??? we both get stink finger.

Bmxer - I was just playin with that... although I know I can put together a sick 5 guys to play anything - I have some ringers in mind!
But enough of my thread-jack!
In all honesty - I kinda like wakeboarders when I am fishing... as long as they aren't 20 feet from my boat... they make for nice eye-candy and I don't mind the tunes! Kinda wish I had a radio in my boat on occassion!

I can agree with that, I think those damn wake boats come with the girls. It might be on an interest rate thing the lower the interest rate for the boat the hotter the woman, the higher the interest rate the fatter the woman. Call me crazy, but I need to look into that.TomLeogrande wrote:Bmxer - I was just playin with that... although I know I can put together a sick 5 guys to play anything - I have some ringers in mind!

Re: Agreed Senko
I fully realize that your taxes also pay for these services and that was one of my points. Even if you serve, you are still served by others. I meant no harm and hold no grudge. I studied Administrative Justice for about a year with the intent of going into law enforcement. While the pay seems to have improved quite a bit since then, it still is something you do out of desire and not to get rich.
I still argue that our (all of us, you included) pay for these services though taxation. Trust me, I pay more than my share of taxes due to AMT. This does not imply we own you, but we are your customers and the people whom have to vote to support the services you are paid to perform. We are reminded of this every election by your respective organizations. Please do not take this as a slight or downplay of the importance of your sworn duty. Just a mans opinion that civilians owe you respect for the duties you perform for us and you as public servants owe your communities the same respect.
No back to the fishing subject. At the top of the page is a closure of Frank's Track. Here is closure where we have been appropriatly notified. Sux if you have a tournament that day, but at least they are making a effort to notify all so other plans can be made. Maybe the wakeboarders in question will learn.

Yes, every election. Or at every merchant association meeting where faster response times can be had for a "contribution" to said organizations!Dewayne wrote:This does not imply we own you, but we are your customers and the people whom have to vote to support the services you are paid to perform. I asked a guy that was launching at Orowood about that.. "Hey is that hot blonde an option on those things?"
He laughs and says " yeah, just like that's an option on yours" pointing at my ugly, fat, man fishing partner.....
Good laughs for all...
Seriously though, we as boaters, all need to get along or the enviro freaks will have all of us sittin on the beach.....

Re: Wake Board drama at Orwood Saturday
If in fact Ms. Piepho approved of such an idiotic thing, then they should recall her. It goes to show how ignorant some people are to what is actually going on where they live and supposedly supervise. This article from last year in the C.C. Times http://www.contracostatimes.com/ci_5714 ... ck_check=1
points to this particular area as one of the most dangerous in the Delta. It really doesn't matter if it's a wakeboard contest, or a little yellow rubber ducky contest, that spot is a very lousy choice to hold anything in. Added pressure to other already busy sections is asking for trouble. I would feel the same about running a bass tournament from this location.

Re: Wake Board drama at Orwood Saturday
Forgive my ignorance........ Is the the area between the two bridges that run East/West where the ramps are set up against the shore past Orwood ? Or North past the last bridge that runs into Rock Slough??
You know, we always called each other goodfellas. Like, you'd say to somebody: "You're gonna like this guy; he's all right. He's a goodfella. He's one of us." You understand? We were goodfellas, wiseguys.

Re: Wake Board drama at Orwood Saturday
The rubber ducks are dropped off a bridge, and the first one to the finish line wins.
I am not technically a full time rubber duck, I volunteer. Many of my friends are in fact full time ducks, and put their rubber asses on the line everytime there is a duck drop.
Typically the ducks are assigned numbers, and people can buy a duck like a raffle ticket to raise money for a no doubt worthy cause.
Its a good public relations gig for us, and just one more way we try to give back to our community.
