Wasting Too Much Fishing Line

Post by Wolfeman »

I'm hoping I can get a few tips on how to not waste so much fishing line.

Problem statement:
I buy a new spool of line. I put some of the line on a reel. Next time I pick up the reel I have to guess how much line is left on that spool. Is it enough to fill that reel?
The same thing happens on the reel. I use backing for most of my baitcasters (if the line is 12lbs test or more). Once I put the backing on how do I know how much more line I'm going to need from the spool to fill the reel?

Bottom line is that one of two things happen:
1. I end up with a whole lot of spools that don't have enough line left on them to fill a reel or use as backing. (I recycle these left overs)
2. I end up using up the remaining line that was on the spool, but when I get down to the end it isn't enough to fill up the reel. Oh, I hate that.

Anybody got any good techniques they use to minimize the wasted line?

And, I don't like to ask for help without offering some in return, so here's my help:

There, is a place, as in 'I think a hog is under that dock over there.'
Their, is someone, as in 'Their boat is purtyier than yours.'
They're, is a contraction of They and Are, as in 'They're going to win'

Weather is the stuff that is outside, as in 'The weather sucks.'
Whether, is a choice, as in 'Let me know whether or not you want to go fishing'.

Your boat has a 'console', or maybe two.

Witch, is a woman that will torment you or put a hex on you.
Which, is a choice, as in 'Which lure are you going to use?'
(Just having some fun. Read the sig line.)

Buy in bulk spools. This will cut down on waste. I have a base on mine and I just go to the same knot when I re-spool line.

I measure my line when I remove it from the reel and adjust the backing to net an even number of fills per spool of new line. I use a yard stick with a shallow v cut in each end to measure the line when I removed it from the reel. It can take a few times to get it perfect. I usually end up with less then 10yrds of waste. Hope this helps.

First get some sort of base line, it doesn't matter what kind, and fill the spool with the proper amount of line. Ahead of time you've already marked out, let's say, 100 yards. Nobody casts 100 yards; use something to stick in the ground and tie the line from the reel to the stick and peel off the 100 yards of base line. Cut this off and tie the better line to the tag end. This will insure you of always replacing the same amount everytime. 100 yards is only a benchmark because of rock abrasions etc. 2400 yard spool, well you do the math.

A blood knot works great for me.

Outstanding post Wolfeman..A whole bunch of us "novice" anglers have the same problem..I know I use a lot of my short spools for leader line, but unfortunately I don't use a leader all that often, so a lot still goes wasted..

I TRY TO TELL EVERYONE THAT COMES IN AND BUYS LINE TO CAST AND GO X 2 THAT IS ENOUGH LINE ON YOUR REEL. IT WILL LET YOU GO A LONG TIME TO RETIE AND BREAKING OFF SNAGS.........ALSO THE LINE ON THE BOTTOM OF YOUR SPOOL HAS NEVER SEEN THE LIGHT PROBABLY, YOU CAN ALWAYS SPOOL ONTO ANOTHER EMPTY SPOOL AND STRETCH IT SO THAT IT , THE LINE UNDERNIETH THE OLD TOP LINE THAT YOU ARE DISCARDING AND WILL BE LIKE NEW (ALMOST)??

Sunline has marks on the line that segment it in lengths. I hear your frustrations most 15lb + lines I get two refills from and junk the rest, or use it for a leader materials.

IT would be nice if manufactures actually put some markings 50yrds etc...

I started useing flourocarbon when it only came in leader material, you couldnt get a length of it to spool up. I would use a braid backing that never seems to wear out and tie on 5 to 15 feet of flourocarbon. I would cover the knot with super glue or aqua seal and can hardly feel it go through the guides. I know someone from a line manufature is gunna bash me for this, but I can honestly say I probably have bought the last amount of fishing line I will ever use.
