Folsom Lake. FYI

Post by Ray Vanacore »

For all that want to know, as of Friday Morning 8/31/2007, Folsom Lake will impose the 5 mile per hr Rule on the entire lake. As I work at Brown Ravine ,I was told that this AM. Also we are told that Granite Bay Launch Facilities, isnt usable at this time, untill the water stabilizes so as they can use there lower ramp. So unfortunatly we are the only useable ramp available.

Ray,

The low water levels:

This has nothing to do with the ongoing dam construction?

Anyway think about it, we can actually fish Folsom on a Holiday weekend w/o the ramp congestion and holdups !!!

This is great news!!! For this weekend anyway...

I hope the news stations publicize this and save the wakeboard crowd a bunch of heartache.

Thanks for this update Ray!

Interesting thought Hippie, I am sure it will be much easier to pass a bill for the Damn Dam construction once they say well the lake is already down and limited use, so now is a great time to keep it that way for the next 5 years!

Of course the way state government works they will wait for the lake to be at full pool then dump all the water out, flood the lower basin, break some levy's, destroy 20,000 houses, wipe out an endangered speicies, discover a new rare species and blame it on all on global warming!

What is funny is people will still be launching wake board boats and jet skis. They wont care even when you haul them back in with a ripped out transom.

New Speed Limit To Take Effect For Labor Day Weekend

POSTED: 7:25 am PDT August 30, 2007
UPDATED: 7:49 am PDT August 30, 2007

FOLSOM, Calif. -- New boating restrictions are about to start at Folsom Lake.

A new speed limit is taking effect starting this Labor Day.

Boaters will only be able to go 5 mph an hour on the entire lake.

The speed limit had to be reduced because of the number of rocks and sandbars just below the surface.

To add to the problem, Folsom Lake has only five boat ramps and because of the low water levels, only two of them are usable.

According to the dept. of reclamations the dam raising hasn't anything to do with what is going on right now, but who knows what in store later on this next year. I know the state is doing a lot of concrete work at Hobie Cove for better wheel chair access on the side walk. plus filling those holes up on the Marina ramp finally. So maybe they aren't going to let it fill beyond Hobie cove next year. Time will tell.

With all the other outstanding fisheries we have. Why would you really want to go to Folsom Lake this time of year. All thats going to happen is your going to be stressed out, waked on, and disrespected. Two more months or so, no problem if you can launch.

Guys the thought of the wakeboard and jet ski folks staying home this weekend is one thing but am I the only one that is pissed that the state has decided to throw this 5 mph thing on Folsom "until the water comes up"?

I spoke with them today and they said they have to put this on the lake due to the dangers of the low water......I spend a great deal of time on that lake and it is more dangerous when it is at full pool than it is right now. They have never put a 5 mph speed limit on Folsom when it was down to the low water ramp. They did once when iti was down to the dirt ramp at Beals that Barry was talking about.

There is still a paved ramp at Brown's Ravine and in a few weeks the ramp at Granite will be just fine.

If they want to make it "no ski" or even 20 mph that would be fine but let us at least run around the lake for the next few months at our own risk.....it is at any other time. Does this mean that when the lake fills and I hit something I can come back on the state.....give me a break!

They are not doing any favors to local business, tackle shops, boat shops with this rule.

When I asked the cheif ranger if he would consider raising it after the holiday weekend he said not until the lake comes back up. I said then January or February then and he said "oh no not likely that long" He sounds like a real Folsom expert. WE get so much runoff in that lake in October and November.

It will be great fishing out there no doubt but the state parks protecting us from ourselves has rubbed me a bit wrong. If I am wrong I will stand down but I think they have gone overboard with this one.

My opinion and only mine, is Granite Bay isnt launchable till later, and they dont want us over crowded for the holiday. Plus it was a good excuse for them to do this earlier then they had planned. We are not to happy about this at Browns either, The guy that told you that it would only be till Nov. yea right, he must be a rain & snow God, or hasn't been around Folsom long .

KB,
I've fished enough night tournaments with 5mph limits to know what a pain it is, and how hard it is on high performance motors.
And I know this is going to put a dent in the incomes of support businesses in the area. Hopefully, it is short term.
But eliminating skiers and wakeboarders, and pleasure boaters who don't have a clue sure seems like a blessing. I'd take that on Castaic, Piru, or Pyramid any day, for sure. The main lake is almost unfishable during the summer, unless you hit it early.
As far as the State restricting us, I think we all need to remember that we're fishing public lakes, and we are the public. Any lawsuits or payouts for damages comes out of our pockets. We pay the taxes.
Not to start an argument, but I know how easy it is to lose sight of just how much we are all affected by what happens in the public domain.

OK, I checked out Folsom today. I saw one guy take off out of Brown's Ravine at full speed and within minutes he had sirens blaring behind him and I assume he got a ticket. Maybe this guy didn't see the 5 MPH sign at the gate??
Anyway, I got out late and caught 5 on jerkbaits right up on the bank. I think I missed the good early AM bite.
