9/11/01 Where were you when you heard?

Post by Thad O. »

Today is Patriot's Day. A day set to remember the tradjedy of the brutal attack on America six years ago. Do you remember where you were and what you were doing when you heard?
I remember being at work at the time when a buddy of mine who listened to a Walkman radio while he worked told me that planes had crashed into the World Trade Center. At first I did not believe him. Then I listened to his radio, and sure enough, it was true. I called my wife and she was home and watching it on t.v. We both just could not believe it, too surreal. For a moment kinda felt like what's next? Is something going to happen here, in California? Well the factory allowed everyone to go home to be with family and try to make sense of it. What a horrible day. Let's fly our flags today and never ever forget. United we stand, STRONG!

I was home, just woke up. For some reason, that I cannot remember, I switched on the TV ... just in time to watch the second plane hit the twin towers.

This ranks right up there as memorable events with the explosion of the space shuttle (I was driving to work, less than a mile from my office when that happened) and the Kennedy assassinations (though I was probably too young to remember then).

Bobbin' around Calville Bay, or on the way to Temple Bar. Thing is, we didn't know about it, until we came in to the U.S. Open, weigh in.

I was getting my gear ready for a trip to Clear Lk. I still ended up going, but listened in bewilderment to my radio all the way there.

Of course by the time I got to the lake, my head just wasn't there.

I'm sure that 9/11 changed me in a deep way. To this day, I still ask myself how human beings could do this to this, to other human beings ? I just can't imagine that God... or Allah... Or Budah.... etc... would ever ask for such a thing.

This was just human beings at their worst.....

PS, Their is always going to be somebody to say, "Types like that are not human".... But yes, at a scientific level, complete maniacs like this, share 99.8% of the same gentic material that you and I do. Scary, ain't it ?

I had taken a "Red eye" flight from Oakland to Altanta, then hopped a plane to Indianapolis that morning. I had arrived at the Adam's Mark Indy hotel at around 7:30am. After getting settled in I was down in the lobby getting coffee and a continental B'fast waiting on the hotel's IT manager ta start my project there. Sat in utter disbelief watching on the big screens, as it all took place live in front of my eyes. Thank God I was on a short flight and not on a plane targeted coming out of Atlanta.

Got up as usual to go to work. My girlfriend turned on the tv to watch the morning news and the rest is obvious.

I was born in NY and actually took my GF there two months earlier. I will never forget that trip.

We went to the world trade center just after rush hour about 9:30, I got a banana at the farmers market that they used to have out front of the center. Then we went inside to stand in line to go to the top of the tower. Even though the line went around the perimeter of the 1 acre lobby floor twice, it still only took 30-40 minutes before we were on the top. We had such a good time on that trip, just incredible.

The only thing I miss more then the loss of the World Trade Center, is the innocent people who have lost their lives and the loss of freedom since.

My wife and I were getting the kids ready for school and we were getting ready for work. One of the rare mornings we had no tv and no radio on. A friend of mine called me and said "Turn on the TV - planes are fallin out of the sky". I turned the TV on, switched to a news channel just in time to see the second plane hit. I was dumbstruck. My parents were scheduled to fly home the next day and ended up getting stranded for a couple of extra days.

I was in the Overton Arm throwing a spook in the U.S. Open. Some local guys were listening to the radio in a boat close by and told us what was happening.

My Pro partner was a Sergeant in the Marines stationed at the Pentagon! His wife worked there also! He got on the phone and finally got in touch with his Commanding Officer.

I didn't even have to hear the other side of the conversation ... by the time he got off the phone, I had my rods strapped down and my life-jacket on. I just said "Let's go"!

I believe the other ehd of the conversation was basically "Get in your truck and get your a$$ back her now! Do not stop to sleep! Do not even think about obeying the speed limit!"

Thankfully, his wife called him on the way in and was allright.

I was back in the hotel by 10:00!

Fishing Corinthian Bay. It must have been a Tuesday. I was numbed. My wife is flying from Heathrow to Nice, France today. Yikes, I'm nervous. Security usually pulls her aside because of chest size. I wonder if that's for security reasons or curiosity? ;)

In the Marine Corps, was in a tower on guard duty. And wondering when I was going to get to go after whoever did that.

was working in monroe michigan right next to a chemical plant, so then they sent us home immediately, and when i was leaving there were 3 or 4 F16's flying over the plant, which in michigan you never did see those types of planes, unless your next to a base. Also remember to wear red shirts on fridays for our soldiers who are still fighting.

I had just walked into a class at MJC when it happened. We lost a lot of good people that day, and the many days since. God Bless all the folks that have put there lives on the line for our FREEDOM. I greatly appreciate what you and your families have done for us.

Was at my local frog pond that I had stocked with some big momma's teaching my neighbor how to frog fish. With both of us being in public safety (cop/fireman) we instantly realized the world would never be the same. I heard a radio blaring and people screaming we new something big had happened.

On a better note we were honored to attend a Boy Scount Flag retirement on 9/11/07. This included all public safety and the military. The troop leader went over the itenerary prior to the service and mentioned burning the flag. I have to say I had no idea what a flag retirement was and our engine company wanted to make sure we were not part of something that would destroy our flag. Now that we know, it quickly made sense. There are many young men in the Boy Scouts currently learning about our great nation and how to preserve/protect it. richie rich

just waking up, I remember there was a big north wind, very dry, hot. I wanted to go dove hunting but didn't want to leave the house, either. I have never been madder nor sadder at the same time in my whole life. I lost a friend that day, another family member was spared by calling in sick rather than going to work at WTC. It makes me sick to see the lefties forget about this attack so soon for political gain.
