Hip Replacement Surgery

Post by Glennt »

I know that a lot of guys who bass fish in tournaments , young and old, have had serious back injuries and have had to have surgery. I need to know if anyone has had hip replacement surgery and what the affect of the surgery was on thier ability to opperate their boat and compete in bass tournaments. I must make a decision within a few days as to wether to continue to use the pain meds to stave off the pain or have the hip replace surgery later this month. I have been told that it completely changes your lifestyle and am worried that I might not be able to continue fishing. Anyone with any experience or knowledge of this situation please help me out and let me know what your experience or knowledge is. Thanks - Glennt

Orthopedic surgeon, who is a member of Folsom Bass Team

Post by Eric Wong »

Glennt,

My brother, Cedric Wong, is an orthopedic surgeon in Folsom. He's also a great bass fisherman, a member of the Folsom Bass Team, and a great guy.

He may have some input for you. Give him a call. 916-952-6546

Sorry to hear the bad news, hopefully they can help you and keep you fishing hard. I know jay Liu had dual knee surgery and is going strong. It is amazing what they can do now. Ever see the video "god's will by martina mcbride?" sure puts life in perspective. Good luck buddy. Rich

Glenn,

My business partner, Carlan Steward, is 60 years old. Outside of our insurance practice, he owns a Kung Fu school and has been teaching Wing Chun Kung Fu for over 20 years. In addition, he teaches Guang Ping style Tai Chi and has been an actively practicing martial artist since his teens. He personally leads 23 classes per week.

Last summer, he had a total left hip replacement! He was laid up for about 3 months and had physical activity limitations for another 3 months once he was mobile again. Today, he functions almost without limitation AND there is NO MORE PAIN! I told him about you and he told me to tell you that the total hip replacement will make your fishing ability BETTER! He also told me if you are interested in discussing the details of his recovery, feel free to call him at our daytime office....(916) 973-0894. He kept a detailed diary during the entire process and is willing to let you read it if you're curious.

You and I have fished together. I've seen, first hand, how much trouble you have with mobility. I've also seen my business partner go from hobbling around like you, to being totally active. Yes, you'll give up 6 months of fishing while you recover. But, you'll fish pain free for the rest of your life thereafter.

Do it my friend.

I had a good friend who I used to work with who had both hips replaced over the years.
Recently having just completed the second replacement. As said before his recovery was about 3 months off work then limited for another couple but he is totally recovered. Matter of fact he bought a motorcycle after the second one and has been riding all over the place with no pain.

Hip Replacement

Post by Tom Proffitt »

I have had a knee and hip replacement, the last one in 2002. I fish in our club tournaments an as a AAA in Wonbass. I have few problems with my hip or knee. You need to make sure you have a good doctor, one who does hip replacements all of the time. Not one does them every now and then. Make sure you do your exercises. It will take four to six months before you will feel stronger. It is well worth it, I have a much better life because I did the replacements. If you have any questions please e-mail me.

more on total hip replacements

Post by cedwong »

Glennt,

Total Hip replacement is great for pain relief due to arthritis. The above info from other input is pretty much accurate regarding recovery and need to do the rehab.

I'd be happy to discuss with you (see Eric Wong input above) or you can email me at cedwong@yahoo.com, if you would like more details pertinent to the procedure, or how it will affect your bass fishing!!
