What Rod action/lenght to use for Spoons?
Just wondering what type of rods you guys prefer for vertically fishing spoons in deep water.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Whatever rod you choose, make sure it has a soft enough tip to not rip the spoon out of the fishes mouth....

I agree with Gator...moderate tip. I prefer a 7'6 to 8ft rod -med action. I like the longer rod for battling the larger stripers. It also allows me to pick up more line on the hook set when jigging. I seem to get more bite using mono or flouro as opposed to braid.
Good luck

You can't go wrong with a 3/4oz hopkins spoon. I was using one this last saturday on the delta and caught a bunch of stripers boucing it around the bottom.

OK - I held off until I was sure that there were some other responses....
I would spoon with the 702C-704C Dobyns, depending on spoon weight. I am spooning with the 703C and do like it.
You guys need to take a look at the Blade Runner spoons. They are some sweet lookin spoons and I can't wait to try them out on a lake near ME

3/8oz. or 1/2oz. Kastmaster in Silver or Gold. I replace the hooks with larger, quality hooks, most of the time with feathers or mylar that the Gamis and Owners come with.
Has anybody used the BPS Extreme Jiggin Rod? It has a pretty cool handle that adjusts, but how about the action? I have found BPS rods seem to be a little bit lighter than the stated action.

Re: What Rod action/lenght to use for Spoons?
The spoon bite was awesome at Berryessa last week - 40 to 55 feet. Clients and I only used DUH! spoons - black shad in the 3/4 oz size. Morning Dawn worked too. I experimented with the 1 3/4 oz size but the bass wouldn't take it. I used to use the "crippled herring" spoon in white, but after the DUH! came along - no contest. I use a G. Loomis 843 (7 ft) when using larger spoons because I am looking for larger fish.

Actually, I go the other way... I use short rods (5'6" glass Ugly Stick and 6' Loomis IMX light), and use Cabelas' RealImage spoons and Rapala Jigging Rap ice jigs... deadly stuff for LMB.
