Question about shades

Post by MikeSouza »

A good pair of glasses these days are not cheap by no means. When it comes to picking out a pair of sunglasses for fishing purposes, what do you as an angler look for? What is you favorite lens color and why? What style frames do you like and the color?

I had PRK eye surgery over a year ago. My Doc told me dark wrap around polarized glasses are best for everyone’s eyes. I showed him my (don’t laugh) Wal-Mart $10 specials, he checked them out and said they were exactly what I should be wearing. Back in MI I was pointing out fish with my Cheep-Os to my buddy with the high dollar Oakley’s. Something to think about.

Mike,
Yeah some shades can be pricy, but a "good" pair of spectacles doen't have to break the bank.

Like Trucker said, Wal-Mart!!! I get the SolarBat shades, they are something like 15 or 20 bucks, wrap-around some have vented frames to reduce fogging.
I am partial to the Brown or Amber lenses (don't know which it is exactly) they do a good job covering all light intensities but really are best for mid-low light conditions.

As a rule of thumb, lense color to light condition
Gray - Bright
Brown - Mid-Low light
Yellow - Low light
Green is also coming on the scene as a good color for sight fishing, (to see green bass) if someone has an answer, please share.
Other colors are offered, but I don't know what or if they offer any special attributes besides bein' pretty!

Find yourself some shades that fit comfortably all day, are light weight, have good polarization and a high UVA/UVB rating.
Pricey shades are going to be nice, but I would be willing to bet that you can find something cheap that works well for you.

All the best,

good construction and durability, I prefer a glass lens, but nowadays most of your good quality polycarbonate lenses have nearly the same clarity and no distortion, in addition quality lenses like you find in a pair of costa's, maui jim's, oakley's etc.. are far superior and offer much better protection than any 15 pair of sun glasses. bottom line is you only have a single pair of eyes and it pay's to protect them over the long haul.

I just usually buy the cheapest polarized ones I can find. Big 5 has them on special ocasionaly, the bollie ones. My thing is I rock them on the counter and make sure the frame protects the lens from impact and scatches. That way when they fall off on the boat ramp and kick them 4 times with my big feet, they are not to scratched up. Nothing worse than pitching into cover thats on your lens.

My dad taught me the importance of a good pair of polarized sunglasses early in my life long lesson of fishing. I got my first pair when I was about 10. Here's what I've learned over the years.

1. must be comfortable and form fitting to my face - not one pair works for everyone. So try different styles and manufactures until you find ones you can wear all day. select a pair that blocks the sun from the sides.

2. must have quality lenses. I prefer glass but like someone elses post the poly lenses are good these days.

3. lense color - for sight fish bar none you should try an amber or vermillion colored lens. I've tried them all and these make the bass standout under all conditions. plus these colors help improve contrast between all colors of the spectrum so it really sharpens your viewing experience

Hope this helps

If you ask me what brand I prefer - Costa Del Mar with the vermillion color lens or Oakleys with the amber lens

Hey Mike,
You only need Sunglasses in California! All you get in Oklahoma is Tornadoes and little fish. Maybe you need magnifying glasses. :)
Heard you bought a Kitty! Heard she is pretty sweet! :D Hope all is well with you and the family. Drop me a line so I can cap on you soom more! Say hi to dad.
Take Care.

Hey all! I guess I should have been a little more specific. This was more of a survey on what anglers are looking for in a pair of sunglasses. I have a few pairs in the truck and boat already. Sorry!

Manuel,
Send me an email and I'll send you some of our OKie bass. Might get back out that way around Juanuary.
