How about those plastic froggs?

Post by Buzzbait »

Anyone have luck with soft plastic froggs?

I bought a couple to try them out, but no luck yet.

How about you? Do you fish them the same as you would a spook or popper?

Are you using the 'horny toads' or 'sonic frogs' or the snag proof frogs?

Either way I have had good luck with all three. Generally they are really good during the hottest days of the summer when the bass are hiding under heavy laydowns or the open areas between the mats.

I find the horny toads a great weedless option when fishing any area that you might fish a buzz bait. A slight veriation I like is to add an 1/8 oz weight to the front so it will swim just under the surface.

The snagproof frog is one of the funnest times fishing in the summer. Fish it like you would a spook keeping a little slack in the line so the frog can 'walk' from side to side.. give it a pause every couple of jerks or just as it falls off a mat. Westernbass.tv had a good lecture on how to fish a from frog.

I have also been hearing that some people have been catching stripers with the snagproof frog as well.
Any old seven pounder will make my day better...

Buzz,

You have been missing out bro! This summer was one of the best froggin' summers ever for me on Clearlake. I don't fish the Delta but I know it is a great bait there as well. I'm sure the "Delta Rats" will fill you in on that and this thread will give you at least 25 different frog brands to try but my personal fav is the Snag Proof Bobby's Perfect frog. You can buy it, open it and start fishing with it without any modifications. This frog, as well as the Sumo, Reaction Innovations, SPRO ect, are great baits in the spring, summer and early fall. I know some guys throw them well into November on certain bodies of water but I have a hard time throwing it that late.

The frog is about the most weed proof topwater bait you can throw so you can throw it virtually anywhere. Throw it on top of grass mats, pitch it underneath brush or throw it along docks and trees, fan cast in open water flats...I mean everywhere! My two favorite applications are throwing them deep into sparse tule patches and work it back with a "twitch, twitch, pause" cadence in the summer, and throwing it over bedding areas during the spring spawn. When bass are on beds, you can really pi$$ them off first thing in the morning by working a frog over their beds....it drives them nuts!!! I have found that with a frog, most of the blow-ups occur on the pause but they will slam it when it is moving too. I know sometimes I will let it sit for a good 10 count if I suspect I am near a fish holding on a bed, log or under a grassmat.

If you are fishing around grass, a frog is a perfect way to target those fish buried deep in the grass pockets that are hard to fish with other baits. We get huge grassmats on Clearlake in the summer and the monster fish will set up shop under these for the shade and food source the mats supply. You need to have a heavy action rod (7' or bigger in med heavy to heavy action) and heavy mono (20 lb or better) or my favorite, 50-65 lb braid to get them out once you hook them. Sometimes, you will bring in a 4 lb fish with 6 lbs of "salad" covering it. I also like braid because the stretch you get with mono on the hookset will cause you to miss fish. and braid cuts through the grass better and will let you land more fish.

You also must have a "backup" rig ready to go when frog fishing. You will miss a lot of fish becuse of the way the hooks lay along the body to keep it weedless. The very thing that keeps you from hooking weeds will keep you from hooking fish as well. I always have a 6" senko in either green or watermelon rigged weedles on my deck for when I miss a fish. I can immediately drop my frog rod and pitch that senko right back in where I missed the fish and many times, that fish will grab it and swim off. It is real cool when you can do that.

Frogging is one of my favorite methods because the bite is visual. To watch that little thing skipping along and all of a sudden to see a big bucket mouth open from below and just rip the crap out of it makes you heart pump faster than you livewell. You think watching a fish hit a spook is fun, wait until you see an 8 lber knock your frog 20 ft in the air (you can miss a lot of blow-ups, especially on grass mats but it is worth it). I had days this summer when I would get 40-60 blow-ups before Noon.

Get yourself some frogs in black, firetiger, and green and rig them on the tackle mentioned and go throw it around structure. I promise you that once you get the hang of it, you will have a hard time putting it down!!!

Hey Bro,
Frogs are a kick!!! I'm partial to the Reaction Innovations Swamp Donkey for a standard frog and the Scum Frog BigFoot Frog. This one is a combo of the standard hollow bodied frog (like your snagproof) and the kicking feet of the "Horny Toad" frogs.

Really my #1 is the Scumfrog, and much of the time i will just "chuck and wind" pretty much like fishing a buzzbait, but I have the ability to stop it whenever I want.

Like it has been said and will further be said, "toss 'em in the natstiest cover you can find."
I haven't broken down to it yet, but when the froggin picks up next year, I may just do it, and that is rig up a heavy spinning rod with some big braid, then I can more easily skip the frog up under docks and cover as opposed to the limited reach of sidecast or pitching with a baitcaster. (Skipping with a baitcaster is doable, but I am not as consistent as I would like to be!)

You will enjoy the frogs, but you picked the wrong time of the year to start

I prefer the hollow body frogs like the spro bronzeye but judging by your name you must like buzzbait fishing. The horny toads fish just like a buzzbait but are weedless so you can fish em in the heavy cover. I find it hard to put down the Rojas kermit and change to the horny toad. There is a fishing with Rowland Martin episode where he goes out with Dean Rojas on Clear Lake and fishes the frog all day. Its a great episode.
