MONSTER fish on. Sturgeon in Pedro?

Post by eddremax »

Last friday was on a point throwing carolina rig brush hog ,65 LB braid and 20 lb flouro on a flipping stick.Get a heavy feeling set the hook and wow ,heavy-heavy fish. After about 30 seconds I figure its a big cat. After 10 minites (no bull) I don,t know what it is. Another boat was watching I asked them to come I might need some help. This fish never rolled like a cat. didn't feel a head shake and never even startd to come up. 3 or 4 times it went down on bottom and sat there. I'd pull it off the bottom and it would just slowing pull drag. I wasn,t gettig anywhere so i tighten her down and IT broke off. Buddy told me divers have seen sturgeon in the waters , but not sure was rumors.

Sounds like one I hooked at Clearlake..Solid hit and then a steady taking of line..I tried a little thumb pressure on the spool to turn it and all I got was my line breaking about 20 feet from the rod..I don't know what that one was either, although I suspect a huge carp or catfish..

One winter on the Delta I was fishing a Rattle Trap through a deep hole. The rod loads up and I feel movement. All I could feel was weight, no real fight just weight. With 15# test it was all I could do to slowly pull the fish towards the surface and each time I figured the line would break. 5-6 times I would get the fish up where I could almost see it and it would slowly pull out drag and swim back to the botton. I really thought it was a big sturgeon. I did not want to break it off cause the curiosity was killing me.

After about 30 minutesor more I was able to get the fish to the surface. It was a 27# carp hooked through the dorsal fin. I felt like I had hooked up with a mule. The fish never knew it was hooked and in the cold water all it know was it wanted to be deep.

Could have been a really big carp, cat, or sturgeon. Makes for a good story, I would have had a hard time breaking her off.

C'mon how can you not know?!

It was one of those dead bodies that the Russian mobsters tossed in there about 5 years ago. They hit hard and fight good :P Them cement shoes are heavy!!!

Really though, a big cat would probly eat a brushhog, but the fight sounds like a carp, fight like a freight train they do

Ed,

About four years ago while fishing a Shambre classic at Lake Natoma I tossed my four inch Pro-Gold worm up against the Bridge pilings and that sucker took off!!!!!!!!!!!!!! screaming drag. I had 6 lb P-line floroclear and this fish was pulling the Ranger w/o any problem we could not stop it!!! after what seemed like 20 - 30 minutes and a 1/2 mile trip being pulled by this fish I tell Vic (flyn-V) I must have a huge Brown Trout.

When we finally get it stopped and in the net it is a Huge Carp. The scale in the boat went to 25 lbs and it bottomed that sucker out.

To this day I think to myself I may have had a record fish for 6 lb test.  But that huge carp went back into the lake.

I would bet you had a huge Carp or Sturgeon, Heck they have found Sturgeon carcasses below Folsom Dam.

Did the fish fight hard and pull lots of line or was it more like you hooked an alaskan halibut that you could only pull up a foot or two and then it would go back down?

If it felt like a 300# halibut it was probably a bass that partially wrapped the line around a limb or rock and was using it as leverage.

Hey Ed,

Great to see you post. it is possible as they reside in shasta. I had a similar experience at clear lake on a rainy stormy day. I never landed the fish but it was an impressive bite and fight. I was hooking three's and fives on every other flip when it hit and ran for deep water. One of those magical days and I am really glad I never saw it because I still dream about it! RR

I know about 20 years ago they stocked some sturgeon in Parkway lake down in SJ. I believe they put four of them in there, and then held a derby.
I'm sure they could of just as easily stocked some of those same fish up there :?: :?: :?:

I hooked one of those monsters throwing a jig in the delta. There was no question about what it was. It came out of the water and tail walked all my spool was worth. Yeah I changed my shorts. And I am sure some one will say sturgeon dont tail walk, but I saw it happen. It was sort of a pressure bite when the jig fell, and when I set it didnt move. It went slack so I reeled up and got pressure just as that monster broke surface 10 feet from my boat and walked. I didnt think I had hooked anything until it came out of the water. Then it just swam back to the land of the lost and paid no attention to the 20# line I was trying to hold him with. I dont know how big it was, but it was bigger than me. Oh and there are sturgeon in folsom lake, never caught one but have seen pictures. I think a lot of lakes around CA have sturgeon in them that no one knows about.

I think they stocked a lot more than 4 in there. I saw one caught last time I went there and have heard of others.

They do that all the time. Very normal for sturgeon to come out of the water.

I didnt know that about sturgeon. I have fished for them on purpose a few times, but never hooked one till then. I actually went out and bought a rod and reel for sturgeon but I only used it a couple of times. I have 500 yards of 100lb spectra on that thing I want to bring the next one in.

Hooked a sturgeon at Oroville practicing for an A/C TOC

Post by Dan Sexton »

A few years ago, this time of year I saw fish on my graph at 70' and started spooning a 1/2oz spoon with 10 pound Seagar line and I hooked and fought a fish for what seemed forever. My partner thought I was just kidding or I had hooked a log. So I handed him the rod when the fish went "dead-weight" and he said, "theres nothing here". I tapped the end of the rod and the fish started it's run, his eyes lit up and he was suprised. We finally got the fish up and it was over 4' long, we didn't have a net (we were prefishing). Lucky for us the line hit the edge of the boat and we escaped what I understand is a very dangerous fish in a boat without a baseball bat and a gaff!!

Wouldn't be suprised if Pedro had some Sturgeon, maybe the earthquake woke 'em up...
