Lower Unit Problem or Service Residue?

Post by norbert gee »

I just noticed a small (footprint size) oil stain under my prop on my garage floor. The stain was still wet with a light brown oil. Taking a closer look at the floor, I noticed about 3 or 4 other dried oil stains from previous trips. I just took my outboard in for a 100hr service about 2 months ago. Could the stains be just lube residue from the service that leaks out with the water that usually comes out when I lower my outboard to vertical position at home? Or is this something serious. It is not leaking now and I can't find any obvious place on the outboard that it might have come from? I'm just hoping to salvage a striper trip to the delta on friday. Thanks!

Your Seal in the lower end unit maybe leak'in....Pull the Prop and check the seal. I'd take it in and have it checked.

It only takes a few minutes, at most good shops, to pressure check that lower unit and tell if the seal/s are leaking. Check it out. Could save you lot's of money down the road. Bill K :)

If you do A lot of idleing around before you are putting your boat onto the trailer can also cause some build up from the exhzaust in the prop. Lower your engine down so that all of the water is out of your engine than wipe out the inside of your prop and see if it leaks. Cooler water temps and A LONG IDLE builds up oil residue in mine. But to be safe take it in better SAFE than SORRY
