Huddleston trailer hook?

Post by parker »

I dont own one but I might get a few and was wondering if you add some sort of trailer hook because the main hook is pretty far foreward on the bait. would this ruin the action? Also how do you rig the trailer on the bait? thanks

There are soooooooooooo many rigging options that all have a time and place. I would guess that most guys have at least one if not more stinger hook on there hudds. at all times. This topic has been dissused many times on this site and others. I would suggest you do a few searchs on this topic. I'm sure you will find all the awnsers you need.

You don't need trailer hooks, a 3 pond bass can eat a Hudd no problem and still get hooked on the standard hook. You are asking for a dead fish if you add a trailer hook. My first swimbait fish died because of the trailer hook I was using and I do not want that to happen again.

I've went back and forth on this thing for two years now and I am finally convinced there is time and a place for stinger hooks on Huds.

If you are fishing for stud spots you will need them because these fish more than often eat the bait from the tail up instead of head first like most Florida's.

I also use a stinger when the largies are just not chocking on them, I have turned quite a few short strike days into fish in the boat days because of a stinger.
But if they are eatum I go stock for sure!

trailer hooks kill lots off bass when u gill hook them 90% of the time they inhale the whole bait no need for trailer i only use them if they are short striking the bait hate to see a big bass with the main hook in the hard part of the mouth and the trailer hook in the gills had that happen 2 many times thats why i dont use them unless i have to

I don't use stinger hooks 98% of the time. And the times I do, I feel bad and cut them back off. The fact is, stinger hooks kill big bass! Remember how ticked you got when you saw that guy take a 10 lber home instead of letting her go... its no different if you gill hook a 10 lber then turn her loose. If you're targeting big largemouth be responsible, the stock hooks will almost always put them in the boat, not to mention you have a better hook-up to land ratio on stock setups.

That's a good point Matt.

I might use a stinger a bit more than 2% of the time but only if it's a tournament and I'm getting short striked.

I wish guys that prefished with senko's would follow the same rule of thumb, that is a bass killing rig.

I am suprised how many people are not using trailer hooks. I would feel absoulutly terrable if I killed a big fish do to a stinger hook. I do use a stinger hook most of the time. I fish for a lot of smallmouth, spotted bass, and smaller 3-5# largemouth. With out that stinger I would not be hooking very many fish. I have probably only caught 25-30 fish total on the hudd. and I would say that over 1/2 have been hooked on the back or stinger hook. I shoud probably also say that my biggest swimbait fish so far is only 7# and that fish was not caught on a bait with a stinger hook. I use stingers when fishing for spots or smallies. When I fish where there is a posabilaty of gettin some big bites I do not use a stinger hook. Up here in the real nor Cal I am mostly fishing for fish with smaller mouths :( so I feel that a stinger hook is needed to get some of those bumps in the boat.
As for the Fish Chris method of rigging hudds. I would think that method Is pretty safe as far as hook ups and fish survival. If there was a gill hooking problem with his method I'm sure he would not be promoting it. So with all that said If you have a shot at some big largemout I don't think you should be using a stinger hook. If you are fishing for spots, smallmouth, or a lake with smaller largemouth a stinger hook will turn a bunch of those bumps into hook ups. Please be responsable. You don't need a stinger hook at Clearlake you get the idea.
