Well devout "jig and PIG'ers" which one is it. I'm gonn broaden my trailer horizons and I wanna know which one to go with.
Uncle Josh has got the nice phantom craw, Superpork floats. Uncle Josh has a zillion different colors, Superpork rehydrates if it dries.

Uncle Josh - they're versatile!
Last year I kept "losing" my jars of Uncle Josh trailers. I discovered a bunch of empty jars under the desk in the garage with the lids chewed off, presumably by a rat. So I bought a rat trap and baited it with an Uncle Josh #11 black trailer...less than 12 hours later DEAD RAT!
They're good for bass. They're good for rats. They're down right versatile!

There is no place to vote for both.
I like both.
Watch out for Cooch, he is gonna get upset Stike King porkers weren't on the list.

Don't limit yer tools!
I've been a Strike King Bohog pork guy for 20+ years, they dont make it any more and fortunately I have a large supply that will last me another 10-15 years. I'll use all three sizes, Sr., Jr. and Baby. Of all the pork I've used over the years, this pork has the least amount of fat content in it. Hence it is more pliable, and indeed comes back once resubmerged, no matter how dry you get it. I've left chunks on my deck for two days, stuck that wadded chunk back in the bottle, 24 hours it's ready ta go, just a little bit darker. They also used a very nasty solution that I'm sure has something ta do with it's effectiveness. I also liked the not so wide, long, slender legs.
I also am fond of the Uncle Josh 101 spin frogs. These work great on the smaller football head jigs when fishing lakes with Smallies & Spots. My biggest beef and deterant from the other Uncle Josh pork, is it dries out WAY too fast and is toast when it does. Way too much fat with Uncle Josh. The fat chunky legs, don't provide a lot of action for my preferences in pork.
The Super Pork is an excellent option. Low in fat content, very pliable and long, slender legs that really move. It can dry out and be rendered useless, but not near as fast as the Uncle Josh, yet if caught soon enough, it will come back if put back in the bottle. The one major thing I don't like about Super Pork, is they use some kind of a die in their solution. Although their colors are brilliant, the stains left behind on yer hands, clothing, carpet, you name it, are a big turn off for me.
My suggestion is to not git hung up on one brand. Play around with the various sizes and styles of each. Certain ones work better at other times and under specific conditions for me, to the point where I have some of each all the time. Pork is fairly cheap and a very cost effective jig trailer compared to most plastics. A jar of pork will last ya a lot longer than a bag of plastic grubs and chunks, for less the cost in most cases. So the next time yer in the shop looking at that $40-60 swimbait, block it out and roll on down to the pork section and spend that money there one time. You will not be disappointed.
PS. Don't wait for the water ta dip below 55 degrees! I switched to pork here on the River seven weeks ago, when the temps dipped below 64. It has made a huge difference in the number of bites I'm getting each day on the jig right now.

Re: Uncle Josh or Super pork?????
First and most important... Superpork works great! Secondly, I will always try to support the local manufacturers first. I met Robin years ago and he's a great, down to earth guy.
The jig trailer plastics have obviouslygrown in popularity...but when push comes to shove....especially in colder water, I always lean towards pork over plastics. Pork has stood the test of time...which is amazing in itself.
Guys, it's not easy to make a living in CA with a small business owner. So I have huge respect for guys like Robin who consistently put out high quality products...and not take short cuts just to increase margins. Hats off to Robin and Super Pork!

Re: Uncle Josh or Super pork?????
Thanks everyone for the awesome input, and to Cooch, you always offer some good insight (just a l'il bit o' a$$-kissing!)
I have used Uncle Josh many years ago, but really when I discovered the Strike King 3x chunks, ALL other trailers for my flipping/pitching jigs went by the wayside!
The real turn on is the nice profile of the Uncle Josh Phantom Craw, but Superpork really has the accolades from ya'll to back it up!
StrikeKing is my mainstay trailer, but I figured pork would be a good decision for the upcoming winter/early spring jigging.
Just gonna have to give em both a run and see how they stack up!!
Thanks all,
BassManDan

Is this perdyy much the golden rule on the delta when it gets cold ? And why use Pork in colder water temps??
I understand that it "floats" pointing up when resting on the bottom........but that is honestly about it.
I have never fished with pork -- Just pinched mini-brushhogs primarially on my jigs or some Zoom Chunk.
You know, we always called each other goodfellas. Like, you'd say to somebody: "You're gonna like this guy; he's all right. He's a goodfella. He's one of us." You understand? We were goodfellas, wiseguys.

Re: Uncle Josh or Super pork?????
My opinion is the pork baits move differently than say a twin tail.
Thats about as far as I think into it.
Other times of the year, the fish like swimming tails, critter baits, etc. When it cools off, the fish respond better to the big flat porkers.
The taste factor might be something, but I don't think so. I kept thinking about why fish get hooked deeper with pork than plastic. Pork with its surface area, "inhales" better when the fish bites it leading to deeper hooked fish. Also another factor may be the fish that eat it are bigger, and able to suck up a big bait better, leading to more deep hooked fish.
Another great feature of pork, that rarely gets mentioned, ITS TOUGH!
When the jig bite is ON you are not screwing around in the boat looking for another plastic trailer, that got tore off. You are just catching them with pork, the bait is in the water, not in your hand! Think about it, wouldn't you rather just keep fishing when the bite is good? Pork goes right down the bank, and sometimes lasts ALL day.

Re: Uncle Josh or Super pork?????
Dan, there really is no "Golden Rule" as to when we use pork, other than, when it gits colder and the bass bite it better than they bite plastics. And in using pork, it is certainly not limited to our Delta! Bass everywhere, just seem to eat a jig better tipped with pork chunks, when the temps are falling from October through March. That in itself, listening to the bass, is enough fer me to recognize and take advantage of using pork. If you were to really look deeper and analyze as to why, I'd say that pork provides a much more subtle, slower action and adds greater bulk to a jig. All this plays to the slow down metabolism of a bass when the temperature is falling below 60 degrees.DeltaDan wrote: Is this perdyy much the golden rule on the delta when it gets cold ? Granted, there are many a jig fishermen who switch to plastic craws and various plastic chunks, who have all the confidence in the world that these trailers will work. Much like pork, they provide a more subtle, slow down action versus some of the creature and curly tailed trailers we use when bass are more aggressively chasing our baits. Many of them, prolly prefer the color combonations offered by plastics versus what we have available for pork. We all know how well Steve Sapp has done here on The River fishing the Zoom Super & Pro chunks over the years.
Pork has stood the test of time. I believe pork has been used as a jig trailer much longer than plastics. It's effectiveness is backed by years of experience, from anglers chasing these lil green bassturds long before you and I. Porker Nation lives on buddy, it's long past due ya come join our clan!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Uncle Josh or Super pork?????
I always use yum chunk trailer. and the zoom that are extra long. Work great but the spotted bass always like to rip the arms off. I heard that they cant do that to pork. Were can I get the super pork?

Not Cool Phil.
Just because Super Pork is willing to sell at the right price doesn't mean that he should get the bad press from your post. Yes this is available....if you don't carry this, it is available through your distributer, Smally's or Bass Menu. If you would like a contact person, I would be happy to provide this for you.
I don't know you, but would appreciate no comment at all if you do not have the facts. I know Robin and he is a close friend of mine.
Thank You and Happy Thanksgiving,

Re: Not Cool Phil.
Hey Dan, how ya doing buddy. Maybe I missed something in Phil's post, I didn't see much more than a simple inquiry to the state of Super Pork. It has been rumored for a year or so that the company was for sale and certainly the supplies in most stores have dwindled. Thanks for the insight, it is good ta know they are still around and pumpin out a great product, whether still owned by Robin or not.Dan Sexton wrote:Just because Super Pork is willing to sell at the right price doesn't mean that he should get the bad press from your post.
