Spook rod

Post by Buck Jr »

I am looking for a new topwater rod specifically for throwing super spooks and 6" pencil poppers for stripers. I am currently using a Lamiglas XCF 705, it just isn't working out for me though(very slow).

Thanks

I use a BPS Extreme Combo 7' MH with the 7:1 ratio reel and braid. Works well for me and they're on sale now for $99.98.

Dobyns rod 735. The best there is for this. More power than you will need, but a lot of tip to work the baits.

I have been using the Dobyns 733c for throwing spooks it has the perfect action , and is the best rod by far that i have ever used for topwater . I have landed largemouth up to 9lbs on this rod and dont see why it wouldnt work very well for some striper fishing too .

For topwater Spooks/Vixens I have been using a 6'6" MH Team Diawa V --- From Walmart for $39.00.

That rod works GREAT !! Topped it with the Viento I had bought for a first modern reel and spooled it with #12 CCX..... then tied with a small Rapala knot.

The Warrenty is less than $50 if that rod ever breaks  ......and you can pick one up at Walmart and not have to find a way to exchange a higher dollar rod + incure fuel/shipping charges back to the dealer.

Just another alernative to ponder and consider.

I find the length of the rod most important to me. I need to get a length that puts the tip of the rod as close to the water possible without hitting it. It seems to make them walk the dog much easier. If the tip is to far off the water it jerks the front of the lure up to high and ruins the action.

Ditto on that 735....

The extra length also makes for monster long casts so the bait spends more time "fishing" and less time in between.

The MBR844, MBR845 and BCFR894 all make for great striper sticks if you're throwing Super Spooks on braid...

I recently bought the Dobyns 763 for spooks and it's the best spook rod I've had. I like the extra length for zinging those suckers out there. Has a giving tip for effortless walking da dog. Only thing I dont like is the handle is a couple inches too long and I'm gonna have Alan cut it down a bit.

Double Ditto on the Dobyns 735C...

...and better yet, it is also a GREAT frog rod, too! IMHO, this is one of the best rods in the Dobyns line.

Davet the 763 is awesome with a carolina rig and flukes..And Ron I use the 735 for frogs and pitchin..I have used it for spooks and pencil poppers and find there is less fatigue with the 733..But thats just my opinion and I love all these rods.

I experimented with a handful of rods and finally settled on the Dobyns 735 for super spooks, river2sea bubble walkers, and some of the other large topwaters. I agree that the 733 is a killer too, I just like the slightly stiffer rod for the stripers and oversize largemouth. 8)
