Yeah, get the split ring pliers from Big Jeff at Valley Rod & Gun. They are the best split ring pliers I've ever used.

First get the split ring pliers that are of high quality.

Obtain a very small pair of forceps, from a military surplus or medical supply. Train modeling guys use them too. (So did Cheech and Chong.)

A high quality pair of diagonal wire cutters like Knipex.

Cut the hook eye open and throw the lame stocker hooks away. This saves time, and wear on the split ring, which often can be used again.

Use the trick split ring pliers to run your new hook on, and grab up the forceps to continue the turning of the split ring. (Its easier than rotating the ring with the special split ring pliers.)

As mentioned by others in the thread, you can make it a lot easier. With right tools it might not be faster, but sure is easier on your fingers, etc. Bill K :)

Seriously, like others said....

split ring piers make a difficult job easy. They are also cheap so you can afford to leave a few in places where you would be most likely to use them. I keep a pair in my "tool" kit, another pair takes a place in one of my "deep diving" crankbait box and I keep a third pair in my glove box. This way I can always find one quickly. Since I also lend them to my fishing partners, I have had more than one pairs "walk away" by accident so its good to have backups.
