Genmar
Does anyone know roundabout when Genmar bought Champion? Also Ranger and Stratos? Do you think the quality of these popular brands has been effected since Genmar took them over?

Don't know about Champion or Ranger, but Genmar acquired the Stratos/Javelin lines sometime around 2000 or 2001 when OMC went belly up. Bombardier (the snowmobile folks) bought out the Johnson/Evinrude outboard lines about the same time.
As far as quality is concerned, I can only speak about Stratos. In my opinion, quality seems to have gone up some since Genmar took over. Several folks in my club have newer Stratos', and I can notice the difference compared to my boat (mine's a 1995).
An interesting note:
In 2000, Stratos had some serious hull problems on some of their bigger boats, and had an unpublicized recall. Genmar honored the warranties on the OMC hulls, so that must say something about them...
