Powell 805 with Castaic Reel. 65# power Pro.

Powell 805 which is rated to 1 3/4 OR Powell 766. Match that with a Zillion 7:1 or a Viento and you are good to go. And 65# power pro

If you want a good inexpensive rod for punching mat I would suggest a BPS Woo Daves Extreme 7'6'' Extra Heavy rod. I have used this rod for the last five years for punching mat.

I have used this rod to punch with and have turned on several anglers to it.

Plus, for $70 bucks you cannot go wrong.

You guys are going to laugh, I use a shimano trevala rod and a torium reel for mat punching. Its my tuna rod, holds 100lb braid and is rated for it. I started running salt water hooks because I would snap everything else. Laugh all you want but I can flip the bass and 90lbs of grass in the boat in one yank. Maby i should break down and get actual grass punching set up. But that one works pretty good, they dont get away. I am new to mat punching, and it was the stongest stuff I have so I thought I would try it.

I am right there with Gator! I use the Dobyns 766Flip for punchin cheese and heavy cover. Right now its set up with a CU 200B with 65lb test Power Pro Braid. But eventually it will be set up with a Revo STX. You are going to want to peg the weigh and a good way to do that is by useing the BPS Bobber stopper. They are lik 1.50 per pack. They are the little rubber deals that work GREAT for pegging. Its better then a tooth pick or peg its! I hope this helps!!

You might laugh, but mine is a old BPS Spiral graphite flipper that I had broken about 4-6 inches off the tip. With that little change, it did not handle lighter weight baits as well for pitching. It is a great set up for heavyweights, Texas or jigs. Sometimes, a guy gets lucky when he screws up. The other bonus is, if it gets destroyed its no biggie.

I use a Powell 766 with a Castic and 80# Power pro. I like the slower reel for winching them out of the thick stuff. I use a 5/0 Gaumie superline and a 1.25 tru tungsten weight. When I set the hook I need vicoden after. You need to move them through the thick stuff on the hook set in my opinion.
