? Good finesse baitcaster???
? Good finesse baitcaster???
Hey guys , I'm in the market for a new light set-up , primarily for darter/shakey , light tubes , and I'd like ta use a baitcaster, know of any that can do the job, or should I stick with a spinning set-up? I was talkin with Dobyns at one of the shows last year , he spoke of a reel that was coming out , and would compliment his rod , I didn't get the make/model.I'd like ta be able ta launch an 1/8 oz.or so darter a ways , with a 7' rod , am I asking too much of a baitcaster?? Any input appreciated , Thanks in advance !!

Re: ? Good finesse baitcaster???
I have about 20 Curado 200's
I just picked up a Revo SX yesterday for lighter casting. It seems to be a good reel for finesse casting. Going to try it out this weekend if the weather lifts at all.

I have a curado 101, that is good. I will try to throw a 1/8 on it tonight and let you know what happens.

Hey guys , I appreciate that , I too am a curado fan I didn't have success throwin anything that light on them but then I didn't have the 7' light rod either , anything light that I have right now is a spincast set-up. I'll wait ta hear from ya thanks!

Re: ? Good finesse baitcaster???
Shimano's Scorpion 1000/Chronarch 50Mg/Curado 100D family will cast baits as light as 1/8 ounce on a medium or med light power rod. The Daiwa guys will bring up the Pixy or Sol for the same finesse app...TonyL wrote:I'd like ta be able ta launch an 1/8 oz.or so darter a ways , with a 7' rod , am I asking too much of a baitcaster??
Re: ? Good finesse baitcaster???
For me nothing beats a Chronarch for light finess applications with a baitcaster. Check out tackle tours write-up on the Chronarch.

I hope this weather does lift too, but the forecast is looking pretty bleak.

Re: ? Good finesse baitcaster???
Another thought on that toni is to post something in the shimano forum. I know they just came out with one of those new magnesium reels that looks really smooth. But they dont make a left handed one for me and they are over 300 bucks. I just use a spinning reel and a old jimmi huston signature series rods. They are cheap and actually the best spinning rods I have ever used. They have huge eyes that are set far away from the rod, so no line slap and friction. They cast way further than I thought was possible for light baits, well balanced and are about 50 bucks. But they take up more room in the boat and the eyes and reel handles catch every rod in the boat. I will give it a try tonight though, but have not had good luck with baitcasters with less than 1/4 once and at least a 6" worm. And throwing that in the wind was a mess.

Re: ? Good finesse baitcaster???
Right now I am useing a Curado 100B on a Dobyns DX 702 Cfor my finesse biats. I dont go as light as 1/8. I mainly use 3/16 and above but it casts that weight just fine. And I cant imagine a difference of only 1/16 makeing that much of a difference. But when I get the money I will be changeing that to either a Revo SX or Revo STX. So you might want to check those out as well! I hope this helps!!

Re: ? Good finesse baitcaster???
Yeah Tony,
Gotta agree with the crowd, the small curados/chronarchs should do the job pretty good.
Really though, you are correct in your rod selection, it is a huge funtion of the rod the cast the bait properly, no matter what weight your throwing. obviously your not gonna cast light baits with a big reel, but the rod should facilitate the initial launch of the bait, and the reel should be free enough the let the rest of the business happen.
I dunno what weight line your gonna run, but if your going as low as 6 lb, consider putting on some backing of heavier line. The heavy line wont pack as tight on the spool and will require less startup inertia on your casts...
e.g. Longer and Smoother Casts
Hope this helps,

Re: ? Good finesse baitcaster???
I've been throwing the baits you've suggested on a similar rod with a Diawa X Series for years now. Great reel for smaller cranks as well.
Now the dark side. This reel will slip a lot on the hook set. Done it since it was new, back 10 years now. Took it to the experts that checked it out and told me nothing wrong, it's just the nature of the beast
.
Hopefully they have that worked out now for you. I just had to learn to keep my thumb on the spool and dig it hard on the hook set. That slippage was costing me fish.

I had to come back...I know...

A Revo SX on a Dobyns 702 is a sweet set up. I have almost all Curados and this Revos' drag is much smoother.

Re: ? Good finesse baitcaster???
For me it's not about the cast as much as about the drop of the bait ... With a 1/8oz weight, there are many good baitcasters that will do the job of casting the bait out there. I use a Chronarch 50mg to throw a 1/8oz Speedtrap all the time, and it does a great job of getting the bait out there.TonyL wrote:Hey guys , I'm in the market for a new light set-up , primarily for darter/shakey , light tubes , and I'd like ta use a baitcaster, know of any that can do the job, or should I stick with a spinning set-up? So, if a baitcaster is what you want, then depending on your budget, I personally would recommend the Chronarch 50mg or maybe the Curado 100d or a Citica 100d ... I also think the new ABU Revo's are also very good reels and I own several ... but for lightweight, I still would recommend the Shimano reels.
However, bear in mind that with a casting reel, I don't believe you'll be able to allow for the proper drop on a light weight such as a 1/8oz darthead. With a spinning reel, there is less tension at the point of line spooling off the reel. With the casting reel, there's a bit more tension on the line and thus ... IMHO ... will make the bait pendulum back towards the boat rather than allowing it to drop straight.
That said, MY preference here would be a nice spinning gear would best fit the bill ... I would recommend a Daiwa Black Widow II spinning reel. But I don't think they are making those any more. Just picked up a Daiwa TD-Sol before Xmas ... but have not actually used it yet. I like the Daiwa spinning reels for their micro-adjust drag ... each 'click' of the drag on the Daiwa reels are finer as say compared to the Shimano spinning reel drags. But there are camps out there that will try to convince you one over the other ... or ANOTHER!!

Good luck to ya ...
Chris

Hey guys thanks for all the great input ! Much appreciated !
201Pro-Hey-I completely forgot about this , having this problem is what actually convinced me ta start lookin !! I had forgot ta include this issue in my post-GREAT observation ! I was sold on the above mentioned reels , might have ta reconsider spin casts ! Does anyone have any experience with those reels not allowing the proper free-fall????Thanks again!
