Where to find a needle

Post by CJ13 »

Trying to find a needle so that i can poke my deep caught fish and release them to bite another day. I've tried a couple of veternarians but they just look at me funny. Anyone have any other ideas where I can get a needle. Thanks.

Try J&T tackle in Simi Valley.

This one is perfect for needling deep water fish - either through the mouth or the side.

Check your local tackle shops or go here to get one...

Any Tac shop , like horse tac and feed will have them. Also too your local vet may have them. I typically use an 18gauge needle. Or you can call Barry Bonds....rumor has it he may have a few

I tried Bonds, but I had to buy at least $100 of the "Clear" to get mine. So I went to Angler's Marine instead....

.. so she hooked me up with about two dozen. Use the heavy guage ones so the hole wont get clogged. Made one using a BIC pen and some crazy glue.

Or... better yet, get the Bends Mender. Much better than the Iviono versions.

You can also get good needles from a veterinary supply store.

CJ,
You can order one from Don Iovino off his website, or call him. He will be glad to send you one.

All of you that are talking needles are going old school.
Since I have the Bends Mender I have found the best Needle on the market.
The Iovino is fine but this needle is so much better all around.
It is a must for all anglers and tournament directors. I have used it at the catch net for the Fed. finals at Castaic and have loaned it out to other guys at different tournaments and when it is given back all they can say is where can I get 1 of these. It works through the mouth very well and also through the side of the fish.
It has it's own cleaning devise and is soo much easier than a plane old needle and it is harder to missplace on the boat.

If you are fun fishing, don't needle the bass. Try using a 8 once torpedo sinker tied onto another outfit, place the weight in the basses throat and lower the bass back down to the depth you hooked it.
Let the bass stay down a few seconds, then lift the rod and the weight should pull out of the bass, then reel up the weight.
I have used a lot of different needles and the ones with a clean out plunger work well, however the needle is larger diameter and creates a larger wound and more trauma for the bass to overcome.
Keep a (wine bottle) cork with he needle stuck into it to help prevent damage and also to find the needle faster.
A friend of mine and a well known tournament fisherman uses an ice pick, crude but effective. Try the weight mehod, it works very well and doesn't damage the bass.

Ray or Others,
Anyone got a pic of the Bend Mender? Just curious which system it is. USAProShop has a broken link to its image and the basstackledepot site seems to be down.

My needle has a green tip and has 3 parts to it; one of which is a solid core inside the needle that slides out and cleans it out.

wondering if this is the same or is this something new?

Hey Tom,
For whatever reason, all links to basstackledepot seem to give me a generic page saying that the URL: has expired.

Is the site down, or do i have a hi-jacker program messing me up?

Website had a small problem should be solid now.. sorry for that.

I had two of the one's Brian D is talking about. They work perfectly - the problem is they get clogged and are more difficult to clean then the bends mender.

True both will work... but, the Bends Mender has a self cleaning cap - cap with a needle to clean out the bigger needle.

NOTE: I have nothing to do with either of these companies and the store sells them both... Just offering up my .02 since I have owned several of both.. actually I still have one of each in my boat!
