Need help choosing a mid-priced, 7:1 reel...

Post by YoungManFishin »

Thinkin about either the:
Daiwa Megaforce- $59.99
Quantum Code- $84.95
Abu Garcia REVO-$149.99

I always been a Daiwa guy but I just don't have the extra $250 layin around to get the Zillion and I'm just not all that confident in the Megaforce's mechanics. I know most of you will say get a Curado with the $50 rebate, but if you have a 2nd choice what would it be? Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Look at the BPS Extreme. I have one and am very happy with it. After treating it with Extreme Reel Plus it casts well and is very smooth. And the price is right.

I say either the Quantum Code or the Accurist Pt with the mail in rebate. Both are excellent reels for the price.

I have the diawa megaforce and it is an ok reel but I would not buy it for applications where you will be casting far. It is good for pitching and flippin but not very smooth when trying to cast a bait a long way

Hey YMF,

ty this link to the Bass Pro Shop Extreme reel...it will run you about $80, but maybe going on sale soon with the Spring Classics around the corner......I think they sometimes go on sale for $60.....but give it a try.....I put a guy on one last year, and he loved it.....

I think the Abu Garica REVO SX is by far the best choice. I have been using these reels for over a year and they hold up really well. I can cast a mile.

I own two revos and both are rock solid. Best, smoothest, most consistent drag system on a freshwater reel I've ever felt and casts like a dream. I also suck at reel maintenance and have used these reels for close to 100 days fishing and no problems what so ever. You won't be sorry. Scott

You might want to consider the Shimano Curado DHSV. They retail for $200, but there is a $50 rebate going on now for that particular reel. It's pretty much a wash on ebay. You can get one at a buy it now price for about $150, without having to wait for the rebate. This is an awesome reel. It may seem a bit pricey, but you get what you pay for. Shimano is the best for warranty work as long as you hang onto the receipt.

Good luck.

ABU's Revo SX-HS, best made low profile reel of the new mellinium! This reel is converting a whole bunch of bass anglers back over onto the ABU side of the fence!

Never been an Abu Fan myself.. Sorry Cooch... But I promise to try one once I get the chance to borrow one and will approach it with an open mind.

I used to be a died in the wool Shimano man until I stumbled across the "Bass Pro Shops Johnny Morris Signature Series Baitcast Reels" JMX10SHLA for leftys or the JMX10SHA if you are a righty... I won't touch a reel that isn't a lefty (yeah, I know Abu makes the Revo in a lefty)

Anyway.. the BPS J morris reel highlights...
7.1:1,
Dual braking system
certified drag up to 14 lbs
10-bearings
blah blah blah....

Standard retail is $179.99, but BPS puts them on sale all the time. Incredibly smooth, reliable, powerful, and the backlash controll is awesome. I have 3 of these reels and love them. I run them on Dobyns 703c and 705c rods.

Good fishing,
