What would be your ideal spinning or baitcast reel for bass

Post by bantam1 »

I am just curious as to what the ideal spinning or bait casting reel would be in your eyes. Gear ratios, features, appearance, etc; I want to see what everyone would like to see in the reels of the future. Feel free to say what you like :) I would like to see more honest ideas than just random jokes. I do enjoy some comedy though!

Thanks guys!

OK I'll bite,

For Spinning it would have to be a 4000 shallow spool on a 2500 frame.

From my first post you know I like Japan reels. But to be fair I have like 24 Shimano reels half were bought here in the US.

I bought 5 Biomasters 1-2000 2-2500 2-4000S

As you know the Biomasters are Stradics with Stella hardwear, Bail, spool, rubber disk drag, titanium lip, and the placement of the switch is in the same place as the Stella.

Also on the shaft above the star drag is a bearing that fits into a machine seat on the spool, giving the spool that much more support and smoothness.

So my dream reel would be a 2500 frame with a 4000 shallow spool, with all of the upgrades above.

we need a 4000 size spool to handle todays flouro lines, but don't need to load up 6lb test on a standard 4000 spool, this is wear a shallow spool saves the day.

Ok bud, this is my dream reel 8) 8) 8)

Take care and thanks!!!!

My current ideal reels that I own are couple of the the conquests and antares ar best friggin reels ever made to this point. Spinning I have a couple sustains, they are also nice.

The digital stuff you guys are doing is great and everything but I don't think it is completely necessary to the majority of the end users. I don't know if it is possible but I think it would be cool to be able to switch gear ratios with the flip of a switch on a single reel. Maybe have 3 settings: high 7 to 1, regular 6.2 to 1, and low 5 to 1. A reel that could do this would probably have to be quite large and heavy though. These settings would not only be practical in regard to different presentations, you could change speeds during the course a single cast. For example, you cast out a jig and get thumped and the line goes way slack. Flip it on high to quickly gather the slack and swing. If it's a toad you put it in low and fight em with a lower powerful gear setting. I don't know if this is possible but it would be cool.

In response to the 2-speed reel:

We did make a 2 speed reel back in the late 1980's and early 1990's. It has been discontinued. The weight was an issue and we found that with making the gears larger (HEG) you do not need the lower gear ratio to obtain the amount of power that you are looking for.

Spinning:

I understand your reasoning and I will submit your info to our production team. I agree that the bearing supported spool is a great idea and it makes the drag that much more precise and smooth.

Thanks for the input guys keep it coming!!!

This is not for a marketing ploy. You guys fish and we want to hear some input as far as what you would like to see in the future.

Sorry but that will not happen. Once we stop production on a reel it will not come back.

LOL. Yeah, I know. Wishful thinking I guess. I just think that the green Curados are super dependable, great reels. They're all that I fish with outside of spinning reels.

You guys have some awesome gear!

But for your middle-class die hards like me, I have 5 curado 101D's, 1 Curado 201 DHSV ( I like the 7:1 for pulling pigs outta heavy cover ,fast!).

Then I have 5 Calcutta 101B's that I use for crankin, spinnerbaits, etc. I like the 5.8:1 ratio for that type of tecnique. I have 1 Calcutta 201B that I use for jigs.

I started off using the old curados, and like alot of people hated when Shimano switched to the new style. But then, I bought a 101D off a friend, and absoulutley fell in love with it! I sold all of my greenies, and as I sold them, I replaced them with the new ones, one at a time. It took some time, but the greenies were EASY to sell.

I know that everyone loved the dependability of the greenie, but the new one is a upgraded version of it. What more could you want? besides, the performance is ALOT better in the new version.

I think time will show that the new model is more dependable, and that coupled with the fact that it outperforms the greenie, all the naysayers will buy in.

I think it's one of those, "you can't teach an old dog new tricks", or sometimes people hate change, type of situations.

In the end, theres a reason why we choose Shimano for our reels, I'll put my trust in them when it comes to design, and engineering.

Oh yea, I also have a 1001 Scorpion Mg that I use for dropshotting. It's nice for dropshotting and has some awesome features including a superlight body, but I'm not a fan of the drag, it's pretty weak. But for dropshotting, it's awesome.

As for coffee grinders, I never use them while bass fisihing. I have 2 Shimano Sahara's 750's (I think they're 750's) that I use for crappie or trout, but I rarley fish for crappie or trout, so they don't get used very often.

To answer your question specifically:

The Curados 101d has a great spool design, but the line capacity is too little. The same spool type with more capacity would be great.

The Calcutta 101B would be great with the same spool as the Curado 101D. Not the spool that Curado currently has, but the spool that would make it "my ideal reel".(does that make sense?) :?

What I'm saying is, take the spool from the Curado 101d, increase the line capacity, then put in both the Curado 101d and the Calcutta 101b.

The spool from the Curado 100DSV model will fit the 100D. The spool is deeper and has more line capacity. This should take care of the problem.

Thanks for the info, I'll definatley go that route.

I called Shimano, they cost about $30.00 a piece with shipping. To bad Shimano doesnt make a 101DSV.

My $200 Curado just went up to $230.00.

Any suggestions for the Calcutta 101B?

The spool from the Calcutta 150 will fit but you need to change the bushing out to the bearing that is on the 101B. It will work for you then and will hold a little more line.

I absolutely love all of my shimano reels; the one thing I wish my sf castaic had was the complete instaguage bar that my older castaic had. The little nubs on the side of the newer castiacs are hell on the innner parts of my thumb and not as easy to find when suddenly bit by a fish. Because of this I prefer my older castaics but they do have a little larger body and are less comfortable than the newer castaics.
As you can read I'm partial to castiacs although my chronarch is simply amazing for a reel thats close to 10 years old. I guess my ultimate baitcaster would cast like a cronarch have a full instaguage bar like an older castaic and have a smaller lower profile body such as the new curado's.

I think you will like the Flipping Version Core. We reshaped the bar to make it more comfortable and it is not in the way while you fish normally. It is pretty easy to use as well. We had a customer with us at El Salto who loves the old Castaic and was not a fan of the Castaic SF. He gave me the nod when I showed him the new Core FV.

Well I just wanted to give Shimano a big Thank You!!! I am very happy that Shimano has added the Biomaster hardware on the New Stradics!!!

I of course will take all the credit for this and place a gold star on the bottom of all my Biomasters, yea yea yea I can just guess were some of you would like me to place the stars.!!

No, just kidding. Anytime a Company brings their products to the next level, everyone wins!!! I do get let down a bit when I dont see JDM support. Heck we have Megabass USA now. why not JDM USA?

Not looking for an issue, just looks like there is also a JDM market out there.

My ideal baitcasting reel would be the Core 100MG fused with the Calais 200A/DC. Magnesium frame. Either frame shape like Calais DC or 100MG. Color of 100MG, but darker. Same number of bearings as 200A/DC. Smooth as 200A/DC. HEG. Brass gears for added strength and durability. 6.2:1 gear rario. 5kg of drag. Price $1.00. You said a little bit of comedy. :D
