HBC question

Post by Moose »

I hope this doesn't start anything, I'm not trying to. I'm just truly curious. Are there no requirements to be in this contest? The reason I ask is because I was looking at the angler list and bios and saw at least 1 guy who hadn't caught a fish over 10lbs and a couple of others that had 1. I was under the impression that this was supposed to be a best of the best of the big bass guys. It seems to me like there should have been a requirement of at least "xx" many fish over the 10lb mark to get in. Just my opinion and I swear I'm not trying to start any kind of crap.

Moose,
This is just my take on your question. And I also mean no offense to anybody.
There where 25 invitation sent out and 25 open entries (first come first served). If a Newbie such as myself were well motivated and wanted to, I could have stood in line over night and plucked down my $200. and got in......it would have been nothing but a donation, but I could have fished it. I am an observer and looking very forward to being part of it that way. The guys who got in with the open invites did not and should not have had to have any measuring stick held up to them. In saying that, I also believe that the guy's who got the invites should not, and in my mind, do not have anything to prove to anybody. If you have been involved in Bass fishing at all in this area, you have heard their names and seen what they can do. Even if you don't know them all, they all deserve to be here. I for one, and I'm sure you will to, would like to congratulate all that made it and wish all of them a donkey in the tank.

John :)

Definately, I didn't mean any offense to anyone. I realize that it could have been taken that way. I was just surprised that, with all the hype, there wasn't some kind of qualification needed. I wish all of them the best of luck and I hope someone sticks a pig during the event.

That being said, I have think the results will be looked at differently depending on who wins. If a John Kerr, Shaun Bailey, or Butch Brown, someone who is well known as a big bass specialist, wins it, it will be looked at that their skill brought them that one big bite. If someone lesser known, or completely unknown, wins it, don't you think it will be viewed as a lucky bite? In my mind if you get a double digit bass in the boat, I don't care who you are, that's an accomplishment. I am also not naive enough to not know how the bass fishing community works.

That's ok Moose, you can say my name.
But does 100 fish between 5 and 10 lbs count for anything? How about 35 fish beteween 8-10 lbs on jigs?
How are you going to have people verify their 10 lb fish count?

Just because some guys don't have the "swimbait" fever, are they less of an angler?

FYI, no one had to stand in line to sign up. There were open spots still when everyone was showing up for the bass a thon.

Well said Doug. Could be me too, but I got up and went to the Bass-A-Thon and took my chance as with many others that were not invited. Guess if I were well known I would have got that invite, Anyway I've done my reasearch on a lake I have not been on in many years, I have my plan and if I get a little luck I will take it Always good to be lucky.

Good point Doug. Maybe I just put too much thought into it. Anyway, good luck to all and I just hope that it isn't won with a 4lbr. I want to see somebody stick a teen fish for this one.

We'll be up there Wednesday afternoon through Sunday. I've got a site by the main ramp this time, so I'll be close to the action for the HBC. You're welcome any time for food and drinks Rob! I want to get caught up on your vacation back east.

Boy, Doug... not too sure. I usually have to book a month or more in advance... lots of snowbirds and other assorted fowl! That is one of the busiest campgrounds I know of. Call the reservations desk at 805.649.1122 and cross your fingers.

Come on by Doug... this is going to be a BLAST! The HBC is going to be an event long-remembered, unless I drink the JD like I did the night before the "Redneck/Californian Tournament"!

Reminder to self - "Self, must get lots of firewood this time!"

Hello Moose,

I definitely didn't stand in line all night to get a spot in the tournament. I did show up at open of the Bass-a-thon and found Ron, who said there were spots open. A half hour later, I had my friend sign up too. So if anyone wanted to be in the tournament that isn't, it is there own choice they are fishing it.

Quite honestly, I have caught my share of tournament big fish, but I am not a big fish hunter. I am more of gambler, and for a one in fifty chance for $10,000, I am all in. I have seen plenty of giants follow my bait at Casitas and do feel confident I have just as good as chance as anyone to catch that big one.

When it is all said and done, IT IS ONLY BASS FISHING, not brain surgery.

It is amazing on how many people want to make up rules for this tournament. For all of those who think the rules are not right or should be amended, have your own tournament and run it the way you want.

Peace out and good luck to all of those fishing the HBC...just not as much luck as me :D

I was thinking about putting together an "Observer's Turkey Shoot" on Thursday, but I don't think that would be respectful to the contestants who are going to be hitting it hard Friday for the cheese, and thought about trying to put one together for Saturday but am not sure I'm going to be in launch condition that early in the morning. May just have to skip the idea this time around.

You guys are crackin me up!!

Roger, after you get the firewood chopped up I can run back to the house and grind a flat edge on that axe. Brian wasn't too bad with it, only made me nervous that his eyes closed on the down stroke!! Don't stand next to him, you may go there wearing shoes and leave with open toe sandals!!
