Sacramento ISE Round Table Question Contest

Post by kb »

Ok guys get your question in before Gator deletes everything again for this Saturday's Ultimate Bass Roundtable at the Sacramento ISE show. The Round Table will be at 12:30.

If we select your question we will leave you a free pass to get into the show and attend the show and seminar. Your question will have to be under this thread and your pass will be in the will call located at the main gate at Cal Expo.

We have alot of fun and this is for fishing questions only guys so if the only question you have is about donuts, hillbillys and radio show hosts save them for another time, this will save Gator the shame when he nukes the entire thread.

On this year's Round Table is Gary Dobyns, Dave Rush, Greg Guiterrez, Bub Tosh and legendary angler Dee Thomas.

Ask a question to one of them or the entire panel. For more information and the entire Demo Tank schedule you can go to www.sportsexpos.com.

We look forward to seeing everyone at the biggest show in Northern California this weekend.

When you're fishing a body of water where the weights are usually small, and almost everyone will bring in a limit, how do you find those bigger fish needed to win? (example: shasta, oroville)

How much pre fish is enough and what do you do to prevent too much pre-fishing from narrowing your focus too much?

Does fishing in these tournaments still feel like fishing, or does the pressure of cashing a check take away from the fun?

Go big early, or go big late? If you are behind in a multiple day event do you go big early, or get the limit first?

Is pre-fishing the day before an event a bad thing? If yes explain why, If no explain why?

Triton Boats just came out with a Strong contingency program, aimed at the Western FLW events. Does this panel feel that this is a positive step and would they like to see other Boat Companies, follow suit?

I feel that Bass fishing is at a critical point in it's history. With PETA and other groups breathing down our necks and now the government has begun to attack us with higher tournament permits outrageous license costs and the new "use" fees, what can we do individually and collectively to bring it into focus and get the word out that we have just as much right to use the natural resources as anyone. We are very aware of the needs to protect those resources and do more than anyone for them yet we seem to be the "bulls eye" for everyone to take their best shot at. It's time we became "pro active" rather than "re active"

# 1 My wife doesn't believe me when I tell her, but fishing 1, 2 and especially 3 day tournaments can be very taxing on your body. This question can be posed to everybody, but especially Dee, who still competes at a very high level. What do you do prior to and during a tournament i.e. equipment, technique, posture, running the trolling motor v. backseat, etc. to get you through a tournament and still have your shoulders, arms and back in place for the trip home?

#2 What is your most memorable moment (thus far) of your professional fishing career?

To the Panel:

1. I am an Amateur who is fairly new to the Team Tourney experience and Bass fishing as a money sport. I have fished with some great Pro's but I always find myself asking:
What can I do to help get that winning limit in the boat?
(Holding the net is not an answer...lol.)

2. As an Amateur I always find myslelf wondering what to bring in the tackle bag to an event. I know we do not have the "time" on the water the Pro's do and the capability to carry what the Pro's cary on deck so:
What type of baits would you suggest Amateur's carry in the tackle bag (not specifically for one body of water but an all around good bag)?
Thanks for your consideration.

All of you have done very well on the California Delta in major events using your individual "confidence" tactics. Do you think that swimbaits will play a more dominiate role in results on the Delta like they have on every other body of water ?

Why isn't there a deck to flip your fish onto at the tank? ie Kent having to land Garys fish. OR why don't you take the hooks out?

You don't read much about push poles. The only time I do seem to see anything about them in the west is at clearlake when trying to get deep in the tules. Do any of you ever use them or are they just more boat clutter and unnessesary.

I can't believe no one bothered to ask this question... sheesh.. talk about a no brainer...

OK.. So here is the question...

If I am out pre-fishing for a tourney with a radio show host who hates it when I use hillbilly donuts fer bait when I'm just trying to catch a moderator with a huge head and as a result he wears truckers hats to compensate (ahhh-hem-hem-gator... sorry.. just gettin over a cold), then does that mean the thread should get nuked?

OK joking aside.. here are my serious questions fer the Pros....

1) (all Pros) What is the one bait/technique you wish you were better at right this very moment?

2) (all Pros) Looking back on all your past tournaments, what is your most common/repeated mistake you wish you never made?

3) (all Pros) If you had to limit yourself to one color for soft plastics, for the rest of your life (swimbaits not included) which color would it be?

3) (all Pros) If you had to limit yourself to one color for Jigs, for the rest of your life, which color would it be?

4) (all Pros) Do you have any odd pre tournament rituals other than organizing tackle, spooling rods, (regular pre tournament stuff). I'm talking special foods you eat right before a tournament, good luck rituals, etc.

5) (long question for Greg Gutierrez) This might be a painful question, but I just gotta ask, sorry. At the 2007 Bassmaster on Clearlake, (granted this is according to the televised coverage) it seemed like you parked your boat at the mouth of the the state park on all 4 days and and threw swimbaits until your arms fell off ( which is what I am guessing happened mid-day on day 4). (Nice double treble on the osprey by the way)... Anyway... You led days 1,2,and 3... Day 3 had a slight decline in weight, and unfortunatly only had 16.3 on day 4. Myself and a ton of my friends were really rooting for you to win. I have that episode TIVOd and have watched it multiple times picking it apart. It looked like Steve Kennedy fished a decent stretch of the bowl and caught fish on both sides of you. He stuck some serious fat chicks aka toads, right around the point from you in the narrows. And other anglers were finding giants all over the lake.

16.3 is nothing to shake a stick at, and the decline at day three seemed like it might have been a little bit of foreshadowing that the place wasn't replenishing as fast as you were drawing from it. So I am wondering.... Did you have other water you found during pre-fish? Did you live and die on that one spot in front of the state park. Did all that get cut from the televised episode? In 20/20 hindsight, what would you do different? Basically, in a nutshell, what happened and what would you do differently on day 4?
Do it like no one is watching...

How much do you depend on your electronics and what brand/model do you prefer? Also do you use your electronics for finding fish or structure or both?

You had a decent prefish. You have about 3 spots(that's the best I could muster) that are holding decent fish.
Tournament day comes and all your fish have shrunk. You try all the obvious adjustments. You can see those good arch's down there but can't get them to go.
Do you live and die on those spots and just keep pestering those fish, or do you start fresh and look for new water?
I had to come back...I know...

This question is for Greg Gutierrez;

When reading the rules in most part they are written very clear, i.e. one rod is to be used at a time. No rods over 8 ft long. Then there are some items that are not even mention or about the use of, i.e Sonar, GPS, and Biosonix but they are used during tournaments. With that in mind, why can’t tournament anglers use Aqua-Vu during tournaments?

To the panel;

Do you think the rules of most origination are written open ended for controversial issues – like trolling?

this question is for everyone. in the old days 1980's and 90's everyone talked about running the tides when fishing the delta.but now days you here more talk of just adjusting to the water level and fishing an area with different baits and techniques.what are your opionion's on this and does the price of fuel play into your decision ? thanks dave hill

My question is for Greg " Kent/Gary/Dave/Dee and Bub have all made their "careers/names" fishing predominantley Western waters, thus showing that it can be done! With the introduction of the HUGE payouts in the past couple of years out west, have you given any thought to staying local to make a living fishing, or are your sponsors more concerned with you fishing the National circuits with the most exposure?Thank you, Jason Bubier.

To all: Most of the Tourney orginizations have region and some have specific bodies of water that they fish (ie. delta teams, oroville regions etc...), alot of people have become "experts" on their home water and not as well rounded as most of you. Yes you are more likely (and usually do) finish higher in the Angler of the year title, but how do you mentally deal with trying to compete for the win at each tourney? Thank you, Jason Bubier

As the number one witness to how a co-angler's fishing techniques, attitude, and marketability can be improved in the non-shared weight tournaments, What does it take from doing ok as a co-angler to being those co-anglers that are always in contention? Not just being in contention but also sponsorships and ways you have seen successful for co-anglers obtaining them.
