Zebra Mussel's

I was watching the New's last night here in Salinas and they had something about finding Zebra Mussel's in San Justo Lake just outside of Hollister.

I beleive they pump the water in from San Luis.I wonder if it may have them also.I have never seen one over there not that look for them but I probably fish there as much as anyone.

I sure am going to make sure my livewell is dry from now on.

i fished Comanche last weekend and they check my boat and asked where i had fished last because of the mussel's

What have they done to other lakes where these things were found? I fish San Justo a lot and I'd hate to see it closed for any amount of time. How do you make sure you're not spreading them from one lake to another? What do they look like and how big are these things?

I have heard that the larval stage of these things are very tiny and can survive out of water for a few days, maybe longer if wet and stuck in trailer bunk carpets.

i went to justo sunday morning and they were not allowing boats on the water. ramp was closed! Hey nelson, ive stopped by a couple times and the doors were closed. In fact I came by ths morning about 10:30 and the door was closed, what gives?

It would be easy to stop the spread of this mussel by way of transportable boats. Simply install a "dunk" tank at the exit for each body of water that contains this mussel. The tank would simply be a shallow pit filled with water containing a mussel-killing chemical. All boats on trailers leaving such a lake would be required to back their boat/trailer into the poison pool with all pumps running, the bilge plug removed and start the big motor to get at the water inside.

This would coat ALL suraces with the toxin, including saturation of the carpet on the bunks where the microscopic larva can survive in wet fibers for a while.

Yes, there would be a cost for these ramp/tanks. But, those costs would be far less costly than all the alternatives...INCLUDING restrictions on launching. When you turn away boaters, you're stopping a regular source of revenue that would be a greater loss of revenue than would cosy for "dunk" tanks.

what is it exactly that the zebra mussels are doing to hurt the ecosystem of the lakes. I am not very familiar with these and for some reason I thought I heard a story about zebra mussels cleaning up the great lakes a while back. I am probably completely wrong about that but I am just wondering how these mussels are makin a negative effect. thanks
