Dropshot Knot?
Dropshot Knot?
So why does everyone use the polamar knot when dropshotting? Seem to me that you could use just about any knot with a long tag end. Juts about every time I tie a polamar knot with 6 or 8 # floro the line gets all kinked and curly lookin. I know there must be a reason why everyone uses the polamar knot. How do I tie a GOOD polamar knot with no line overlapping in the knot and have the line come out strait instead of all curly lookin'?

I get the hook standing strait out just using a clinch knot with a long tag end.

You can also use a uni knot. If your line is curling with a palomar, try wetting the line and tightening it slowly as not to heat the line up.

I think i see what you are saying. When you cinch the knot is when it stresses the line and makes it curly right??? Well, what i do is after i pass the bait through the big loop, i stick my finger in the middle of the circle that the line has made. I then cinch the line down until it just about gets tight on my finger. Then i wet the line and slowly pull the knot tight. After that, i put the tag end back through the eye of the hook and pull the knot through the eye carefully and this will make the hook stand up. This knot is very dependable when you get it right. Good luck.

Re: Dropshot Knot?
If you run 2 hooks and 2 baits on your drop shot rig you cant use a palomar on the top hook. Tag end is way to weak and if you get a fish on the lower hook it will break off. I use a albright....

Re: Dropshot Knot?
I use a Palomar knot or a San Diego Jam knot, depends if I'm in a hurry or not. If I'm preparing for a trip or I'm not pressed for time on the water, I'll tie a San Diego knot. If offers pretty close to 100% knot strength on flouro. If I'm in a hurry or just fishing for fun, I'll just use a Palomar for ease of use. Haven't had any problems with either knot, rarely has the knot broken, usually the line itself. I think Aaron Martens uses the San Diego Jam for just about everything, if I'm not mistaken. Either one allows the hook to stand out straight when tied right. Also, always wet your knot before you tighten down. It will save you crucial knot and line strength in the end.

Why does everyone feel that the palomar tag end is weakl
There is trully no difference between the line above the knot and the line below. Wet it wilh saliva which has more lubercant than just water and tighten the knot slowly. I have fished the two hook method a lot and have not had problems with break offs with the bottom hook.
Smelly jelly or other scents also work good as a lubercant.I have fished two drop shot hooks and a jig on the bottom and caught a lot of fish on the jig and don feel that there has been a break off probiem that way either.
Lubercate well and tighten slow and I dont think you will have a problem. also when you thread the first line thru the eye of the hook always have the hook pointing towards the rod. That will insure that your hook will be oriented more easily in the up position. Always be careful that the two parts of the line are not tied against the sharp end of the hook eye where it comes in contact with the main shank of the hook. That sharp edge can cut the knot during the stress of landing a fish. After the knot is tight put the tag end back thru the hook eye from the top towards the bottom. This will further insure that your hook remains pointing upward and will hook you fish thru the roof of the mouth and they will almost never get off.
If you are fishing with multiple hooks never be in too much of a hurry to land the fish. Quite often you can double up with other fish who grab the other bait during the fight
I only use the multiple hook method when fishing for spots. Im not sure I could handle a couple of big largemouth pulling in seperate directions, but it is great fun with spots
