Time to dust off the key board on Casitas (long)
Time to dust off the key board on Casitas (long)
I have not been logging on for a year or two now, (lost my password) just reading and enjoying my retirement, but I just can’t believe what I've read and heard about Casitas management. Guess I just needed to come out and vent.
They never learn. So here’s my 2 cents. Remember the countless physical inspections month after month at Castaic after the boating accident some years ago? I think they just got tired of doing it. It’s the same old over reaction again, pops up again.
My guess is, by the time F&G or anyone identified a so called problem like this one it’s probably too late to stop it anyways. We’re talking about Mother Nature and she will get her way in the end. After all the Ocean is just a few miles away from Casitas and any pleasure boater who enjoys ocean and fresh water activities will be transferring some larvae or bacteria to this fresh water lake and they probably have many times. Whether they can really survive the trip or the fresh water is Mother Nature’s call. Yes we can clean up oil spills and man made upsets to the environment, but this will be a lost cause to try and stop, and the mussels are probably already incubating in Casitas as we torment the one group of people who are the best curators of the water ways. “The Anglersâ€

You're on target here.
Re: Time to dust off the key board on Casitas (long)
I agree with a lot of what you say.
These are fresh water mussels, not from the ocean, but from the Colorado River system that we fear.
Birds carrting them? I dunno.
Kneejerk reactions? To a degree..
My home lake closing? BRUTAL

Good Vent. Casitas always seems to be at the forefront of bad ideas. Remember when they were thinking to let the lake open to water skiers

Re: Time to dust off the key board on Casitas (long)
Thank you Deltabound... I feel much better, unfortunately the problem still exsist.
I just spoke to several of our club members 2 of which had their boats quarantined for 28 days at the WON event. We also sent up another members boats who now has his quarantined for 28 days. They thought they had it clean and dry, but some moisture seeped in from somewhere. And the rest is history.
I do apologize, I must say I don't understand the problem with mussels in the lake. Other than they clogg up intakes. If anyone can explain it to me I would feel enlighted. I mean this sincerly.
The Zebra Mussel came into the Great lake from Freighters.

No...No...No..................NO!
Birds do not spead the mussles
....Somehow while lurking and j reading text you have missed some of the facts that have come to us from Mike Giusti and the folks who have been at the forefront of this debacle and are trying to fight the good fight for all of us " angler's ". Some are confident that the Gestappo at the Casitas gate will get real and stop handing out rediculous judgemental quaranteen slips and others are not feeling the love and wonder if this is a death knell to our future fishing here in SoCal. The average person who owns a boat does not even know what they have waiting for them at the Casitas Gate. Please spread the words Clean and dry and Western Bass will have helped where others only seek to impede. I know your thread was trying to be helpful but at this point it's preaching to the choir. No one can fault the average Johnny Lunchbucket for not knowing the history and possible solutions that are currently being considered but a word of caution is to be considered if you please. This site, These threads, Our opinions, are being selectivly collected to present a case against our angling cause by the powers that be so it is paramount that statements not based on fact are not used. It is in my opinion okay to question but try not to make a proposition unless it is a known. Thanks for coming back to us Ben and help us to help all the others become more knowledgable on this newest of affront to our sporting ways.

Johnny lunch bucket, as in blue collar worker or average Joe?
It really doesn't matter what you background may be, everyone has the right to express opinions on a bass fishing message board.
The lake Casitas board has their own agenda. The evasive quagga mussel isn't newly arrived in the USA, it's been here for over a decade in the Great lakes and Mississippi river drainage. Fishery biologist are well aware of how to contain it's spread. The fact that lake Casitas doesn't receive water from any contaminated source and has gone to extreme measures to prevent recreational boater use from bringing the mussel in, should indicate that other factors are in play.
DVL should be concerned due to the lake is close to the Colorado river zone and Mike Gusti has made a great presentation to inform those on the Casitas board, what DVL positions is and how to contain the quagga mussel. Clean and Dry.
Take a look at lake Sherwood; upscale estate homes and world class golf coarse. A private lake Casitas developed into a lake Sherwood will increase the areas revenues. Johnny lunch bucket wouldn't have a nice lake to picnic or fish on.
When smart people are saying "don't confuse me with facts, my mind is made up", they are trying to tell you something that you may not want to hear.
All we can do as bass fisherman is play the cards delt and make the best of it. Support "Clean and Dry" and enjoy your day.

Kelly,
Calling this guy "Johnny Lunch Bucket" is a lot like you being called Typhoid Mary. I think if I was him that I would take just as much exception to that name as you did Typhoid Mary.

I hope they are collecting these post...
These people were voted in...
And if someone thinks that someone venting against a system is going to be used against the angler community or any community...THAT JUST RENFORCES THE FACT THAT THIS IS AMERICA AND WE WON"T BACK DOWN FROM POLITICAL INTIMIDATION
This is not the 60's and we aren't dealing with the FBI...we are dealing with...well someone else can fill in the blank...

Re: Time to dust off the key board on Casitas (long)
Here we go..........I did not call Ben or anyone Johnny Lunchbucket....I use that old Line from the Simpson's all the time. It is/was an attempt at humor which is tough to do over a keyboard. Ya prolly missed my Mr. Burns imitation too
I just feel that If my good buddy Mace in Santa Barbara who gets out fishing on the average....every other blue moon was to show up at Casitas because of the brilliant planning at his home lake of Cachuma he would be neither Clean nor dry. I had hoped that since Ben is a Bass Club member he could help us " anglers " out by helping to spread the news...........If anybody is a Johnny lunchbucket it would be me as I sometimes feel I am probably the poster boy for being a working man....
When was the requirement added that the underside of my truck had to cleaned and where is that posted? Is it at the Lake? If my truck fails and the boat passes can I get another vehicle or does my CF number go in the computer for 29 days? How would I know this is a requirement if they add rules faster than I can sign sheets of paper that say I haven't been to this or that lake? The wifey is PO'd that I spent last weekend cleaning the boat down to the last twinkie wrapper.....I doubt She will even believe me when I tell her that the only way in is with a clean truck too
It never occured to me that somehow a line would be drawn to connect Ben and Johhny(myself
) ...I apologize and hope my PM to Ben will make ammends.
Dave,
It is a very thin line we walk at the lake. I know others here have urged caution and I think it is a practical thing to try and adhere to. Nobody likes this and you are free to do and say what you like as is the right of all of us but in this timeframe IMHO it would be best to err on the side of caution. I'm all for bust'n something I just don't know what as the whole world seems upsidedown to me this last week.

I'm sure it does mean a lot!!
And not directed at you Kelly...but who the hell cares if this guy came onto a public website and asked a few questions and stated his opinion??? How is he supposed to find out...sit down for 8 hours and read through all the bullcrap whining posts from the last few weeks to figure it out? It doesn't hurt the cause anymore than Ranger Rambo at the gate nitpickin one fish scale off a livewell , then when I go in later the girl working the gate lets in two piece of turd boats in front of me that were visibly dirty that I could see from the front seat of my truck?? If everything is so clean and dry then it will be one badass magic trick for that trout truck to deliver...maybe it's trout for astronauts..they empty some packets in the water and the little troutlets plump right up and swim away? It's a public website with public info yes..so if the person that owns the website doesn't like it they can delete it...and if someone who is actually DOING something to help out instead of complain and lose their grip on reality doesn't like it..then they can request things be deleted...otherwise..suck and it up and go find something to do...like clean and dry your boats!!

As for what Gary did , I would have done the same thing...
As for being careful...I was some what polite to Erin when I failed the body cavity search last weekend when it was rainning...I'm all about the inspections...but if I ask to talk to the inspectors boss or who ever is next in line...and he gives me a phone number...What can a brother do...
Yes, I know they can ban you from the lake forever if they want...
Is there anyway to fight it...even if its someone in a rental ranger outfit getting paid $13 an hour...no...
But we all have lawyers...

Re: Stop the madness.......................
This thing has just gone on way to long..........People at each others throats, calling names, burning rubber out of parking lots and on and on and on an on.......It's just a lake Kids, let it go....Hook up the dirty, wet boat, pony-up for some fuel and tow the thing 200 miles away to wherever else you like to fish and let 'em have Casitas. They're only little green fish and there's alot of places to go catch them. Even if it is your "home" lake, not all of us are fortunate enough to have a "home" lake and we have to tow no matter where we go. I suppose it's worth it to some people to end friendships and piss each other off to make a point or "show" them all that you are mad as hell and your'e just not gonna take it anymore. In the end Beauracracy will win out, always has and always will. Live with it or sell the rig in protest. That will show 'em. Either way, you lose. As for me. I will tow it down the road and be thinking about you guys while I'm getting bit somewhere else.
Enjoy

Sniper...you make a great point and that's all good in theory, but not all people live under the same situations and circumstances and a 200 mile trek to fish is just not feasible.

Re: Time to dust off the key board on Casitas (long)
I think it might be time to take a look at the fly fishing portion of our sport. The New Zealand Mud Snail hit a lot of our waters here in California, especially the Eastern Sierra in places like the Upper Owens. Like Zebras, mud snails have an immediate effect on the ecosystem, as they compete for nutrients and food. They flood the waterways, and effectively make a temporary wipe out of such important species as mayflies and some of the smaller caddis species, both of which make up a huge portion of the food source in most trout streams. And anglers and other river-goers are typically the source, though unwillingly, through drift boats, waders, etc. But its been found where mud snails are, they overpopulate within a few years ans suddenly take a major hit that in most cases they can't recover from. And within months, the native insects are back in shape.
The kneejerk was the first reaction here too. Private land owners and public holders were the first, and not just in California, to call for the closure of rivers to anglers in govt. lands to stop the infection. Mostly because most Western states have a river use policy allowing anglers to use rivers that are deemed "navigable" by boats. When it was found out that the species was suspectible to a parasite worm from New Zealand, even more fly guys proposed we introduce yet another invasive species to take care of the problem. Once again, knee jerk. But in this case, the state did an awesome job here in California. As of now, they have a massive public awareness campaign about the snails, and are recommending proven solutions from state biologists. It has worked quite well: compared to the high infection rate at the start of the invasion, it has slowed amazingly. In the last year or so, maybe 2 waters have the snail problem, compared to the dozen or so we racked up around Cali alone in the first year.
I know you might be saying that the Zebras and Quaggas are completely different here. Zebras haven't left Erie after a few years, and they have an effect on industry around the region But the idea is the same. The private sector that holds land around our lakes and make up our water boards are influencing decisions here. We need to raise enough public awareness to get the state involved. When the other boaters and lake users see that they are going to have their rights to public boating threatened, they'll raise a storm. We just need, as the concerned fisherman and conservationists, to lead this fight. The local governments can and will get in trouble if they don't find a environmentally baked or extremely reasonable excuse for shutting down the lake. California will make a whole lot more noise when the massive boating population in California takes their business elsewhere because the water boards got their way. Believe me, the fees we pay for state boater registration fees and lake fees make a whole lot more for Sacramento than they like to admit. When the boards shut down SoCal, the state will take action because, with the massive budget deficit and debt we're facing now, they'll want every bit of fees they can get. They know they can't shut down the lakes themselves, after Castaic a few years ago. We just need to get their support in this fight.
