Pig&Jig strait to Power Pro?

Post by leachman90 »

I have almost always used a leader line but am thinking about tying right to the PP.Will it make much of a difference as long as I color my line black?

I beleave it will make a differnce in clear water. I've played around with power pro with the first 6ft or so black with bed fish on the mother lode lakes, not only am I able to see it 10 ft down but they can to. The fish are more reluctant with the power pro than they are with 20lb floro. or mono. I do use it on the Delta in the correct setting and application, I do not use it around rocks because pig and jigs with braid and rocks will lead to a heart break.

So dirty water with grass its fine, with wood it will work but your going to have issues when you hang it up.

ALL FISHING LINE HAS ITS PLACE, AND FOR ME, POWER PRO E.I. FIRELINE ETC. BELONGS ON A FROG OR TOP WATER BAIT, THATS JUST IT PLAIN AND SIMPLE. IN THE WEEDS, ON THE MAT, WITH A FROG, BRAID EVERY TIME. UNDER THE SURFACE, TREES, ROCKS ETC, ITS BERKLEY BIG GAME GREEN & FLOROCARBON FOREVER, THERE YA GO ..

Hi Bruizer,

I used to use a Dobyns 704C with 20lb Trilene Flouro for fishing jigs in the Delta. I could feel the bottom OK, but I always thought it should be better. I recently switched to 20 lb Sugoi Flouro and that seemed better, but the difference wasn't huge.

So I picked up a Steve's Custom jig rod and tried it out for the first time this past Sunday when I was out with Cooch. I was absolutely amazed at how much easier it was to keep contact with the bottom and feel it when the fish sucked up my jig. While most of Cooch's fish were grabbing his jig and running for deep water, so I think it was pretty obvious to him that a fish had picked up his jig, I was working the jig slower and I was getting the "tap" when they sucked it up, although it felt more like a "thud" with the Steve's Custom rod.

It really showed me how much of a difference a more sensitive rod will make. I don't know what rod you're using, but my feeling is that the rod will make more difference than braid vs flouro and you should be fine using the flouro.

I should add to my post above, the Steve's Custom jig rod was twice as expensive as the Dobyns, so it's not really and apples to apples comparison. The blank was the equivalent to a G-Loomis GLX.

thanks greg.

Im using a few jig rods, which may or may not be my problem.

Now when a fish slams the jig, and runs for deep, I can usually
sense the attack. especially with the braid.

Im using a
765 maybe or 766 ? in boat cant see.
Dobyns jig rod MH
Dobyns Heavy
Powell MH Jig rod 7'6" ers agian
Powel Heavy
Lami 806

everything is 7'6" or 8' MEd-Hvy to Heavy.

I only fish the Delta. YES cooch has told me
1000 times to use flouro.

I will reload reels tommorow, then run some trials.

Im extremly Impressed with GAMMA Flouro....way stronger thus far.

Nothing wrong with any of the rods you are listing, but try a rod from Beach and I believe you will have at least one or two. He makes them as you want, blank, etc. I would at least talk with him.

Yeah, what Bill said. After my experience last weekend with my new Steve's Custom rod, I'm sold on the need to go "top of the line" on the jig rod.

I've got 5 Dobyns rods (crank/jerk, topwater, spinning, etc.) and I'm quite happy with them. But I now believe that it really pays off if you step up the game with the jig rod and get the absolute best. The Dobyns that I used to use for jigging, a 704C, will now be used for T-rig/C-rig plastics.

I can't wait to get out on the water to use it again. Good news is I've got a club tourney to fish on the Delta next weekend so I don't have long to wait.

bruizer,

do you not like throwing a jig on the Powell 7'6 rod? is it a 765?
if so i think that is a great all around delta rod! i got two and am gonna get a few more!

as far as the braid question............ I am throwing 30lb suffix with a
5' - 7' leader of flurocarbon. i usually use anthing from 17lbs - 25lbs. 20lbs seems the norm though. AND I do not loose too may jigs! last time i was out i lost ZERO!

i notice if i do more crawling and lifting of my jig during retrieval i am safe.

I have tied braid directly with good results in, moderately stained water, depths 30ft+ and heavy cover.

Would you guys use power pro when punching weed mats or dropping through holes?

Also, I'm thinking of trying fluorocarbon for jigs. I fish mostly lakes. How much faster would the jig be falling due to the sinking properties of fluoro. With the tidal current on the Delta I could see how fluoro would allow better contact, but wonder if the jig would be falling too fast in cold water. What pound fluoro would you use for jigs?
