520 vs Z20

Post by Zedonis »

I am looking to purchase a Ranger and was wondering if I could get some feedback from forum members with regards to their preference for either the 520 vs the Z20 series. Handling and overwall fishability/stability. I have heard good things about both but I think more positive feedback on the 520 series.

I would also be interested in perspectives of those who have driven the skeeter 20i and how they compare the the 520 series.

Thanks
Paul

Paul,

If you are looking for a new boat the Z520 gives you the best of both worlds. It is one awesome ride.

The 520 has been a long favorite of the Ranger family of boats. The layout is great, lots of room on both the front and rear decks, and cavernous storage. The performance of this hull is good specially when coupled with the HO 225 motors. It will go down in history as one of Rangers better designs.

The Z20 is also a great boat, some people love the Z styling and some the older design. The Z styling is better and the have the more secure storage latch system.

The one that is right for you is a matter of choice. Play with both and see which you like better. Both are fantastic boats.

If your looking for a new boat and I can help shoot me a PM.

Thank you both for the information.

Can you tell me when and if the basic hull design has changed on teh 520 series? I also heard the 520 is a bit drier a ride. Your thoughts.

Any takers on the Skeeter 20i comparison question?

Thanks again,
Paul

Paul,
I am not aware of any significant hull changes on the 520 series. There was a top cap change in 2004 that moved the deck a little higher on the hull, other than that I am not aware of any change. It does ride a little drier than the Z20, but the driver can make a huge difference.

Well, I'm sponsored by another company, but I have friends with all
3 models- Z20, 520, 520Z. From the guys that have had all three they like the 520 and the new 520Z with the Z20 the least favorite. Rangers are nice boats, and I'm sure you'll be happy. They fish flat and stable, and are in the top 3 in JD Power rankings.

If I can be of help, shoot me a pm with your phone number and I'll give you a call. I currently have all 3 models of the 20 footers. I have many hours in both the 520 and Z-20. I only have 8 fishing days in the new Z520, but, I have a good feel for it. I'd love to be of help, but not typing on this keyboard. My "finger" gets tired. :D Thanks.

I looked at both the Z and the regular 520. I went with the regular 520 because I believe the beam length is about 3-4 inches wider than the regular 520. I have a limited amount of room between posts on my gate and driveway system so I figured 5 inches between posts was better than 3 backing up into my carport. Thats me and my choice but anyone whoud know exactly would be Mr. Gary Dobyns for sure. He will make the exact differences to a T

Paul,

I agree with all of the above information, but I must agree with Dewayne that you really need to get in each model and see which one you enjoy the most. They are awesome boats, and you will find that each model is a favorite to different people.

I love my 08 Z20, and frankly wouldn't trade it for either of the other two models for trivial reasons that suit my personal preferences. When I ordered the Z20 I thought I would hate the rails, since I heard some complain about them. After using them I much prefer them over all the other styles of latches, and I have owned them all. I also prefer the storage layout of the Z20. Most seem to prefer the new Z520, and it would be my close second choice. The ride is awesome on all, and all provide a dry, solid ride.

I also have owned two i-Class boats before my Ranger Z20, and can tell you a lot about the differences (email me at LimitBy9@aol.com). The i-Class is an excellent boat, but definitely a clear notch below the Ranger in overall quality, and in attention to details. You should also be sure to compare quality of the trailers (Rangers use a C-Channel frame with Road Armor protection vs. painted tubular steel). The Ranger ride is better, and handling is much better. The quickest way to see the difference is to put each boat in reverse,, and then try to turn while backing up. You can do it in the Ranger, but not in the iClass. That level of control is also exhibited when going forward, and trying to weave around obstacles.

Please give me a call and I can go over the differences of the 520, Z 520 and the Z 20. I have had a chance to run all three models and currently have all three in stock so you could compare them side by side.

Thanks

I have had both models

Post by Ken Mah »

Paul-

I've had two 20i's and am currently in a 08 Z520 w/250 HPDI. Call me and I'll run you down on both. Each boat is different in its own right. There are some things that I loved about my Skeeter and there are different things that I love about my Ranger. After you are done filtering all of the information, you have to decide what is best for you.

If you want to ride/drive my Z520, I'll be on the Delta all this week and at Clearlake for 3 days this weekend. Then Shasta. I don't know where you are from, but call me if you are interested.

Respectfully
