DVL Fishing HELP!

Post by Fish'n'Fool »

Hello anglers, I am new to the area and I went fishng at DVL last Sat. with my two little boys and fished for Bass.

I tried eveything, deep, shallow, texas rigs, drop shot, and nothing. What am i doing wrong?

I saw a tournament that day and they had some good fish.

I really want my boys to get some fish and i need help.

Not sure if i can afford a guide and not sure what they cost too.

Anyone have any info. my boys and i would appriciate it!

Thanks!

go fish Perris with your kids. Fishing will be much better for you and your kids.
They should close it....

Give the folks at Last Chance bait and Tackle in Hemet a call. They can usually help you out with some shore fishing information. Good luck.

You will quickly learn that DVL bass are the most finicky bass around and DVL itself is in my opinion one of the most humbling lakes around. As soon as you feel like you have it figured out, the weather will change and your great bite that you had going will lock down tighter then a Beyonce jump suit.

Right now the fish at DVL are in a serious transition mode. From winter to Spring...BUT...they dont all go at the same time. There are bass shallow, deep, suspended, pre spawn, chasing bait AND I even caught my first BED FISH of the season on Saturday. The bass are really spread out though like I said.
I won the National Bass tournament on Sunday with 25 lbs and I went through about 25 fish, BUT, as good as that sounds...it wasnt easy. There were times when we didnt get bit for an hour, then all of a sudden we would catch 5-6 fish. One of the keys is to KEEP MOVING. If we didnt get a bite on a spot in about 15 minutes Id make a move. I cant really tell you what I was doing in detail (baits, technique and areas) because I have more tournaments coming up, BUT, I will tell you I was fishing shallow, slow...VERY SLOW..., small baits, and very light line..5 and 6 lb flouro. I targeted prespawn females. I caught about 8-10 FAT prespawn females. Every fish in my limit was a prespawn female full of eggs. These fish were fat..Im sure they were also filling themselves up in preperation for the spawn.
The rest of the fish we caught were normal looking fish.
As I said, on Saturday I caught a bed fish so I knew the prespawn females would be the way to put a good limit together. I never went deep even once. Although the 2nd place team fished deep ALL day and weighed in 24 3/4 lbs. They got their fish in 30-45 feet deep.
Right now you can get them at any depth, using what you like to throw.
I'm actaully going to start guiding at DVL, Perris, Puddingstone and Silverwood. Im waiting for my liscense as we speak. If you want PM me and we can get something set up for next month. I will only charge you for you , the kids can come out for free..The spawn will be in full affect in the next 3 weeks. It will be a great time for the kids as well as yourself to catch a ton of fish. If you dont use me, Art Berry also guides on DVL as does Art Hill. They will both also put you on fish and help with instruction as I will. Its about to be a great time to bring huge smiles to your kids faces because Spring has sprung at DVL and it will only get better.
If you dont want to go the Guide route then try what I said...It may work for you...Good luck

Post by TEAMDEADMONEY »

as long as we can fish your spots, with your baits and you have to give up ALL your secrets. hahaha 8)

You almost made me puke yesterday when you told me you had 27 lbs. It was like I got hit in the stomach for 5 seconds. I wasnt sure the 25 would be enough to win it so I beleived you..SUCKA!
Thanks for letting the common folk win one once in a while.

Thumbs up to Pete Marino for sharing the cheese with a dad looking to put his kids on some fish. And congrats on the win last weekend. For the bass fishing community I would like to apologize for the response telling you to go somewhere else. Not all of us are so unneighborly. It amazes me that sponsors would support such selfish actions but to each their own. As for fishing dad, my suggestion to you would be to show up around 2:30-3:00 and attend a tournament awards ceremony. Introduce yourself and the kids to a fishermen or two. The kids would probably be just as excited to see a fish come across the scales as see them come across the gunnel. 99 percent of the fishermen (just stay away from the Sunline/Legend Boat guy) would be happy to share how, what, where and when they caught their fish with a kid. It is what most of us do this for. Probably get a hands on lesson on tying the right rig and a handful of secret baits from the right guys as well. Nothing better than getting your kids in to this sport. I have raised two boys in to Tournament fishermen as my team partners. The oldest is in his first year "on his own" out of the back of the boat in the WON Pro/AM series. Their enthusiasm for the sport comes from guys like Mike Long and John Kerr down here in San Diego sharing so much of their knowledge. I am sure that there are others up there that will be as generous with your kids as San Diego guys have been with mine. In the next few months fishing should get a lot easier. That will help your chances of bringing em to the docks like the big dogs.

FishnFool, make sure you're there 1st thing in the AM. Throughout the winter months, the best bite happens within the first 30 minutes. I reccomend waiting until a week after the next full moon (Late March) and the bite will be much better. Do yourself a favor and visit the Fred Hall show this week. There will be many people at the show who regularly fish DVL and can help you. Don't feel bad about getting skunked. If you're not familiar with the lake, it can humble the best of them.

I have to say, I think Puddingstone Lake is the most Humbling lake around.

I have taken them a couple times and we always get skunked. Then i go alone and i catch fish. I need to put them together.
