How long...

Post by mark poulson »

does it take the CHP to do a report on a hit and run where they have the plates of the offender?
I was hit Saturday, and called yesterday to find out who did it and what was going on with the whole thing, but the desk guy said the report hadn't been filed yet.
Anyone out there have a guess?
My driveway is naked. My grown kids heard about it, and are calling their moms, worried I'll go off if I can't fish.
And my 13 year old is already tired of having me in the house, instead of out fooling with the boat.

I my opinion Mark, you should go to the CHP office in person. If you call them they will put you off. Good luck, hope you get this sqaured away.

I had a hit and run with my truck and boat on the day before the tournament. So, go to any CHP office and file a report there. Then they will give you a copy of the report.

Bring the boat with you to the CHP office, so the officer may photograph the damage.

Run now, dont walk.

mark . I could be wrong but I believe you said totaled boat and trailer. Any damage in a vehicle accident of $500.00 or more need to be reported to the dmv. they have all records of ownership. try it go to your local dmv and fill out a form for request per your accident!

when the chp took all ur info he should have given you a report number then. that number is the only number you will need for the insurance end of it. i think it is also the notification that the dmv gets. as far as the report, the officer may have multipule reports to do for that day. but as long as you have the file number to get to the insurance you should be good to go. being that it was a hit and run , a traffic investigator should be giving you a call. sorry to hear about ur incident, it allways scares me to be in bumper to bumper traffic....

Mark,
As fishinman said, definitely go to a DMV office, or get online and send in the notice to the DMV with the record number the CHP officer should have given you. You can get the form here:
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/forms/formsaccident.htm

I know when i had my accident with my boat, (no hit and run, but 3 cars involved) it took over a week for me to get a copy of that report.; and that was just the facts report, not the final incident report.

Then i forgot to notify DMV of the incident and got a suspension notice in the mail about it, even though it wasnt any of my fault. Ooops! Thankfully, i went right down the street and took care of that before it got too far.

So, you will likely need to wait up to a week for the initial report, but dont wait that long to file the incident with DMV.

Good Luck,

Thanks for the heads up on the DMV. I'll go today.
The CHP did an accident report, and said the ins. co. would be notified, but I never even thought about the DMV.

Kirk,
That was a fun day. You showed 'um all, for sure!
