Rub marks on boat from docks etc.

Anybody have a good idea how to clean off streaks from dock rubs or rubber bow rollers on the trailer. My regular boat cleaner isn't cutting through the big rubber skidmarks on the boat, and they are adding up.

gel gloss. you can get it at home depot usually around the plumbing/bath/shower isles. there are two types, an aerosol spray and a liquid in a can, I like both, the liquid cleans rub marks very well. it is made for gel coat.

Dremel tool with cloth fitting and some mild wax.
Takes even the hard plastic dock material off

I use acetone. Be careful around your decals and cf #'s. I put it on a rag and lightly rub off the scuffs. The guys at pro fiberglass told me about it. Works great.

A rag with some gas on it takes them right off, just make sure you wash the area with soap and water when you are done. Probably not the best way but it works good and I have been doing it for years and never had a problem.

Acetone will work wonders but keep it away from the decals. It also works on the black marks your guides put on a white boat. The other product that I use for marks is Mr. Clean Magic Erase. It is a sponge that will take marks off the boats and seats.

use a clay bar and detail spray you can get it at an auto paint store

I had the same problem a few years ago (when I had a boat ) and I asked the same question on this web site and I got a great answer...fingernail polish remover. The wife looked at me pretty weird when I asked for some, but the stuff worked great and did no harm to the boat finish.

Clean your boat up with mcquires about 4 coats, then use carnuba about 4 coats, then I throw on progressivly harder waxes to seal it in. Then use a blue coral sealant. That finish lasts for ever and just polish over with a zymbol water based. Nothin will stick to your boat and everything that does will fall off when you wipe it down. Takes about 2 days to wax the boat up the first time, but all other coats of wax just flow on and come off easy. Be careful what scents you use that have protein enzymes, they will cut off the wax. Oh and your arms will get huge....

Speedo squirting my leg.

Tach working intermittently.

Fuel gauge broken pegged out at full. (So my nonboater doesn't owe me any gas money! )

Red light burned out in Lowrance flasher.

Prop lightly sanded, skeg dinged.

Troller motor with dinged metal blades, and distinct fish attracting growl.

Never did turn on one of the two other Lowrance LCDs and caught fish anyway.

I am going again tomorrow!

I like using a little bit of Meguires oxidation remover to take care of small scratches and rub marks...

What are some good examples of the harder waxes?

I use the maguires for the first clean up. Then oily waxes with carnuba "really makes it look oily wet". Then maguires tech paste "gives depth to the shine". Then I use the maguires 100% pure wax "protects the oils". Then a blue coral sealant. Its a progressive build up from oil to hard wax. Allot of work but lasts a long time. Be careful going back over what you have built up, a cleaner wax will remove all you have done. But you can come up with your own system. Just dont use turtle wax products ever, they oxidize. And dont wax in the heat or the sun, it will burn in oxidation and could permanatly damage the gel coat. My boat is 12 years old and looks brand new. And check the manufature date on your products, they break down after about a year.

Not to hijack this thread, but.... I recently bought a bass boat with the CF number painted on. The guy did a nice job, but now I have to get them off to put the new registration numbers on.

Can I use acetone to get the painted numbers off? Will the acetone damage my gloss coat/gel coat?

I have tried using a mild rubbing compound, but it just isn't making much progress. I would hate to damage the finish trying to get the numbers off.

Once the paint is dry, acetone tends not to work very well to remove it, especially if it is not a water based paint..You might be better off trying to have the numbers painted over..

Great question - a good point on why its not good to paint on those numbers.

surely the acetone wont do much now that the paint is permanently on there. Honestly, i wouldnt trust putting any chemicals on there that would take it off as it will surely also then take off gelcoat.

My suggestion to you is this: Take your boat over to the local body shop in your area. They are gonna need to do some professional work on that to get it off and keep your gelcoat in-tact.
