SAVE PHACE SAVES LIVES!!

Post by drrakruz »

After bass fishing for 19 years and tournament fishing for the last five years, I have to put a positive post up for anyone who doesn't own the Save Phace Fish Head Mask. Anyone who fished the 100% WRL at Berryessa last weekend was in for a rude awakening. The morning started off mildly choppy. After the first hour, the wind picked up and turned the main lake into a body of 3' SWIRLING SWELLS!! If I weren't wearing my mask, I literally would not have been able to see a thing after getting speared by a SHEAR WALL OF WATER!! After the hit, the mask instantly dried to 100% visibility, allowing my partner and I to return safely. When it comes to safety, I consider myself to be pretty conservative on the water. You can confirm that with G. These swells were worse than the ones at Clearlake last year. Even if you don't fish tournaments, it makes sense to wear one of these to avoid getting hit by bugs, mild splashes, or whatever is in the air at the time of a run, including BIRDS!! The mask also keeps your head warm on those colder mornings, especially if you are wearing a sweat jacket with a hood. I purchased mine on ebay for $50 bucks. I believe they retail for around $70-$80. This has to be the best $50 investment I have made related to bass fishing. Hope it will be one of yours too.

I use ski goggles with UV protectant, cost $15.00. Bonus they dont fog. It seems like every Save Phace I have tried fogs up. Yes, I know they fixed that problem years ago, unfortunatly I guess I have a string of bad luck or bad breath in terms of fogging em out. OH YEAH and my ski goggles fit in my glove box

I couldn't agree more with drrakruz. I purchased mine after having laser eye surgery. I love the feeling of watching where Im going instead of hiding my head under my jacket. I have yet to have mine fog, and YES they are great during those bitter cold morning runs across (insert your fav lake here).

I love my eye sight too much NOT to drop the Benny on Save-Phase.

Been useing the Save Phace for 2-3 years now and they are just fine. Even on nice morning to keep your eyes protected and able to see instead of the wind watering your vision. Bill K :)

I just got a flyer from Bass Pro Shops and they are currently having a sale on Save Phace masks. The sale prices are $49.99 or $59.99 depending on the style you select.

Can't sit back any more

Post by Rob D »

A couple of years ago when Save Phase masks first came out I was drawn in by all the talk on this web site, which I now suspect is nothing more than pro staff or friends of the company pumping their product. Seemed like such a great idea that I purchased 2 so my partner would always have one too, this was when they were over $100 each. I have tried to stay positive about them even though I have never one time been able to drive my boat for more than 100 yards while wearing one, not with any of the many replacement gogles they have sent me. They fog up so quick that if I put them on last thing before taking off, they are fogged up before I can even get up on plane. You would think that this would clear with air flow, but it does not, even taking the mask completely off it does not clear for several minutes.
The best the fogging ever got I was able to start down the lake with only fog around the outside edges only to discover the next problem that rain drops did not roll off of the lenses but rather sticks to them until you can barely see through them.
Still the eternal opptimist, I did what others advised and coated the outside with Rain-X to shed the rain and took them out last Sunday only to have it fog up beyond visibility within seconds of putting it on. I'm DONE!
If it seems like I am disgruntled, it is because I am, these 2 masks I paid good money for have never worked, NOT EVEN FOR 1 TRIP! And yet I am to believe that I am of a minority, I continue to see posts on this website of how wonderful they are. They fog up instantly, do not shed rain drops, the chin of the masks pushes into the top of your jacket making the mask ride up and prevents good visibility of the gages on your dash. Honestly as I sit here now I cannot find anything about them that works properly. The continued pumping of this product on this website has even made me question whether any of the product advise given on here is real or just another free commercial brought to us by those who are sponsored by them.
Sorry for the rant, but hopefully it will save someone else who might be thinking about dropping the money on a Save Phase Mask from making a big mistake, Buy a full face helment for the same money or a pair of goggles for about $10, both of them work better, I have never had either fog up.

Did you ever talk to one of the staffers or the company to get the problem rectified?? I have provided replacement lenses, etc to more than one person to get the original lens batch problem taken care of.

If you talk to one of us, I am sure that we can help you out with the problems you have experienced.

Rob,

I have also used this product since it was introduced. I also bought a pair of masks when the price was much higher than today. Back in the early days, the company replaced a ton of lenses they had trouble with, all for free. The cost must have been great, but so was their customer service ethic. Now, about the fogging - I have had exactly the same problem as you. What I found works the best is to put the mask on and rotate it to the top of your head, like a welder does with his helmet when he is not welding. Do this while you are milling around waiting for blast off or while idling out of the five. Let the mask acclimate to the outside air, then rotate it down over your face just before the moment of blast off. I think you will find that this helps greatly with the fogging problem. Rotate the mask up when idling. And when running, if fogging starts, lift the mask slightly to let cold air in to displace the warm air you are exhaling. I am not affiliated with the company. Matter of fact, they turned me down way back when, when I offered to distribute their product. And after all the lens recalls, boy was I glad they turned me down. I bought the masks anyway, because I felt they were, and are a good product. They just fog up worse for some of us than for others.

Fish dist I thought the marketing was that they werent suppose to fog, sounds like a lot of work to me. I just put my ski goggles on and VROOM with my beanie on or hat this pretty much covers my face.

Gator, I did receive several replacement lenses for free, cudos to Save Phase for that, but although the problem improved a little it never went away. A few weeks ago I went through all the lenses I had, aprox 8 lenses, and the coating was milking up on all of them so I picked the best 1 to give it another shot.
Fishdist, thanks for the advise on how I might get it to work, but I'd rather have a cold face and clear vision. I get pretty warm sometimes getting ready for blast off of a tourney in all my rain gear already and I think the mask on my head might make the problem worse for me, plus I live in Oregon and quite often it is raining so then were back to the rain covered mask before I even start.
I think I'll just keep one in the boat for my non boater, that way they won't know how to get to my holes  . I'll just wear gogles.

SOCB, Yeh, quite right, that was the marketing. But after you drop 200 bucks, you try to make it work. I was fishing the Mother Lode lakes in those days, all through the winter and it gets mega cold up there. You can tolerate a little fogging as an alternative to your face getting painfully cold. Since I moved to the Delta, the early morning runs are shorter for me and I don't use the mask much any more, maybe just once or twice a season.

Hey Rob, I'm going to try the goggles, too.

Goggles are a great idea but if you want to shield your whole face try this adjustable face shield for $13 at Harbor Freight: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/d ... mber=46526

It's better than most shop face shields because it has an adjustable rachet style headband that lets you get it snug around your head so it doesn't fly off (even if you turn your head).

Works great for me. Curious if others have used the same model. Can't beat the price...

I too have had bad luck with the fogging. I have purchased four of these masks (they have a tendency to fly out of the boat at high speeds when they are laying on the floor). I have used the replacement lenses and still got the fog after a few minutes. During the Holder Ford event, I used my partners new mask and I was amazed. Not only did it not fog up, but the amber lens made every thing incredibly clear. With the cold weather and the unbelievable hail squalls, that mask was a life saver. I have come to the conclusion that its not only the lenses that make the difference, its the venting on the mask. I am going to purchase a few of the new ones and give them another try.

The lastest Bass Pro catalog has the Save Phace masks on sale for $49,95 and $59.95 depending on the graphics you want. If you are going to buy a new mask please send me a note and I will send you one of my pro staff cards that entitles you to a extra lens or hat for free.
