Re: Re-Carpeting a bass boat
Hey Skunked again,
Do you mean doing it your self or having it done? There is a big difference in the two. I know you can call Ranger and give them your hull # and they can ship you a full set for your boat and I would not doubt that other boat mfg's do the same and you can do it your self, I have done 2 boats and its not that hard, in fact I just did a small pc on my Ranger, had to replace the bolts on the bracket that the fold down seat post goes into but all I did was remove the carpet and re-glue it with outdoor carpet glue.
I have 3 kids at a stay home wife, I do what ever I can myself to save money, don't be afraid, you can do it!!!

I'll look into it for sure, but unfortunately I do not have a lot of experience with things like this. Guess theres one way to get it though eh?

Re: Re-Carpeting a bass boat
If you can afford to have someone else do it, then you should.
It is not rocket science, but it is a nasty, icky job. Carpet glue is not fun to work with or clean up. Also, it is worth it when buying quailty marine carpet. You can buy an inexpensive marine carpet from Lowes, but after you work with it a bit, you will understand why it was so cheap.
If you have an old boat and you are looking for the least expensive solution, then the Lowes carpet works fine. It won't be perfect and it's going to need regluing at times, but you can do the whole job for $100 - $150.

I did mine myself and it's not that hard. It is time comsuming so take your time and don't try do do it in afew day. I took my time and did it in a week. I bought my Carpet ( indoor outdoor) from Home Depot, big mistake as it won't last. Proably going have to redo it again. Might be a good idea to go one size larger in ordering your carpet to be safe and won't cost that much more.
Just do the compartment which is smaller one at a time and save the pattern to cut out your new ones. The carpet glue they sell at Home depot is good. Another tip when working with the carpet glue is to wear those cheap plastic throw away gloves as it's hard to that glue off your hand.
Think the going rate is $500-$700 for labor plus materials.

Re: Re-Carpeting a bass boat
Well,
After my experience today with my boat, I think I'm gonna concentrate on the "workings" of the boat and THEN the cosmetics, teh carpet it has now really isn't that bad I just think i'm jumpin the gun a bit. I need to work out a few ideas i'm tossin around in my head and see how I can learn to repair/restore my boat myself as I think I'd enjoy the process and knowing I did it myself, not to mention the $ I'd save in the longrun. Unfortunately, I learn best when showed not told.

Re: Re-Carpeting a bass boat
I carpeted my boat. Never done one before. Being on a fixed income, I went the cheapo route and got carpet from Home Depot. My boat's black and silver, so their grey carpet looks fine.
Preparation is the most important part of the job. I pulled the old carpet, scraped as much of the old cement off as possible then used a flat vibrator sander with 60 grit to remove the rest and roughen up the surface and wiped it down with laquer thinner. Applying the cement is also important. Make sure you use a toothed trowel so the cement doesn't get too thick or you won't get a good bond.
I cut the deck pieces about 2" larger, glued and rolled them down then trimmed. Always use sharp utility knife blades. Same goes for the hatches. Overcut the carpet, roll it over the edges and clamp it in place with some strips of wood until the cement dries. Then trim.
This is not a weekend project. Mine took about two weeks. Be patient, work it out in your mind and take your time. I'm sure you can do a job you'll be happy with.

Re: Re-Carpeting a bass boat
P.S.
When I did the carpet on my boat I had 7 compartment to do before the deck, floor and back deck. Make sure when cutting the carpet to to keep the cut of the grain the same direction.
Use your old carpet for the pattern and mark the back side and cut it with a sharp scissor.
