Great News - Cachuma to remain open!

Post by scottsweet »

Folks,

I just heard the vote. Cachuma will remain open to boaters, etc with the new inspection protocols. The inspection procedures will be posted shortly on their website.

This is great news and should be a good lesson to Lake Casitas.

Yahoooooooo!

Finally a group of indivduals who made a good decision based on facts!

Outstanding!

Hopefully this will lead the way to CMWD (Casitas) turning their vote around.

This is good soo far... We need to see the actula rules to see how well it will work for the people who live outside the county.
I hope this shows Casitas there are ways to keep a lake open.

The rules will be very strict..and one concern is for those who "live near an infected lake" so to speak. I don't know what the rules are for "near". One example given during the meeting was Riverside County. Supposedly, if your boat is registered "near an infected lake" you are subject to leaving your boat at the lake for 14 days before it can be launched.

Also, it will be interesting to understand what they will do once the cleaning stations arrive as well as the database. The database will take a while and will require all the lakes to participate for it to work.

Nevertheless, it is a compromise and shows that communication and working together can produce results.

All of the rules and details will be forthcoming on their website.

The most important thing...they listened and were reasonable. I hope the Lake Casitas Board of Directors take notice and compromise is what is the best for everyone involved.

Hey Scott

Do you have any idea when the launch ramp will be finished. Is it going to get miraculously finished when they get their pressure washing station.

I did see the new rules and yes they are tough. But I guess it is the price that we have to pay to keep fishing this lake. I would jump through hoops to get to fish Casitas again. Hopefully they will decide to reopen it too. Of course the closed minds that voted on Casitas will never change. They need to be gone.

Hey Ron T

If you go back to page 2 of the posts there is the Cachuma lake protocol that was posted here by Hutch. It is very invasive. But at least the lake is open.

Morris who ?
Looks to be reasonable, only differance from the pre casitas closer is that Cachuma has added a powerwash . I can deal with that , anybody know when the lake will open the gates again ? Same drive for me as DV minus the white knuckles on the 91\ 215 interchange const. zone.

That's all fine and dandy for Ventura/LA/Santa Barbara County locals but sucks for everyone else living near an infected lake. I don't mean to sound like I'm whining but I'm hoping they can come up with a better solution for the longterm. There is no way in hell I'm going to haul my cherry a$$ boat up there, drive 4 hours home, wait 14 days while my boat rots in the sun, then drive back up. That's TOTALLY insane!

Guys -

Here are the rules basically

http://www.countyofsb.org/ceo/pdf/press ... quagga.pdf

Basically, the rule is strict 'Clean and Dry' as well as a 140 degree wash. Alternates are quaranteen on site for up to 14 days.

The deal with the people near "affect waters" include all boats who's owners registration is out of state, or in counties with Quagga (San Diego, Riverside).

There are some key provisions, like after you have been on the water, you can "tag" your boat for easy return if you dont launch in any other lake.

it is a great deal considering the alternative, and yes, hopefully other lakes will follow thi slead rather than Casitas.

Lake to open Friday I think, and nice new ramp.

Watch the Cachuma website and the County website for info.

Oh, Ramp was closed for Construction, contractor would not allow partial use while he was still on site.

parking lot is done and striped this week, and open in days!

Thank You for a job well done...

I have to say THANK YOU for everyone working together to make this happen. The alternative was to close and I think this compromise is a step in the right direction.

If there was a lake, committee and process that other lakes should follow, it is Lake Cachuma. They pulled it all together in just 2 weeks and made a strong solution to a difficult problem.

Thank you again.

The rules as we understand it.

Post by John Barron »

These are the rules that were sent out and they may be modified but most likely will stay as is.

Notice to all boat owners seeking launch access at Cachuma Lake

The Santa Barbara County Parks Department announces new inspection protocol for all boat owners seeking launch access at Cachuma Lake. To help prevent the introduction of Quagga and Zebra Mussels, ALL boats will be subject to inspection, treatment, and/or quarantine before being allowed to launch at Cachuma Lake.
** All boats and trailers must be clean and dry
**All drain plugs must be removed prior to boat transport that day
**All boats longer than 24 feet will be quarantined on-site for 14 days before being allowed to launch
**All out of state boats will be quarantined on-site for 14 days before being allowed to launch
**All California boats with registrations or addresses near known infected lakes will be quarantined on site for 14 days before being allowed to launch
**All boats and trailers will be thoroughly inspected and treated by a hot pressure wash per the interim boat launch protocol posted on the Cachuma Lake website at www.cachuma.com

I think that the Cachuma protocols made steps that were very conservative in that area for sure. Until we have more science on the matter, this was the only answer to the pressure to close totally.

Cachuma will offer to "tag" a boat after the 14 days so that repreat visits (as long as the tag is intact meaning no other launches) then you are good to do.

It is not perfect, and many would argue (and did) that this does not go far enough, but the lake is staying basically open.

I am hoping alot of other folks are watching (San luis County) etc.

The plan is to raise the fees for this, but nothing set yet. I would expect to see something in place soon.

Nothing is decided, but it could be either an increase to the existing boat fee, or perhaps a surcharge for the inspection / wash portion.

If all carries forward as expected, yes, the Lake should be open.

You group should be well versed on the Inspection and Treatment protocols. If your members are from San Diego or Riverside Counties, they will not be allowed to launch until they meet a 14 day Quarantine, or if the boat is 24 feet or more, same applies.

Boats can also get inspected and washed ahead of time and get a "tag" put on connecting the boat to trailer. As long as the tag is intact, you are good to go.

But all this is new, so I advise you call the lake ahead of time to confirm and get advise on the best way to go. Also, watch the websie www.cachuma.com

I would be sure to have the boat spotless at the CF numbers. I would trust the operator would use care going over that area. The key here is the hot water, it kills the Veligers (larva) if they are there. The key is not to be point blank with a high pressure nozzle, but to cover with hot water.

If you have AZ tags but live in CA, then you will probably need to wait 14 days. If you live in CA, you may want to reg your boat in CA.

Ok, I think there is a point where we have to get serious here.

I am new to this Board, but I am not new to Cachuma and learning fast about the Quagga issue. You cannot sit here on a message Board and call this serious issue a joke.

While the debate over how real is the spread of this pest by boat goes on, the real issue is how close Cachuma came to closing!

Out of you mind to "play" those games? Ok, that is easy then,, don't. Go drive by casitas, and don't play those games either.

If you live too far away and will fall in the Quarantine, there is no answer for you at this time, other than make everyone else sit on shore with you just because.

This is a GOOD thing, and you need to recognize it. Cachuma was at the crest of the hill, with many other watching, it could have gone over the edge with Casitas, or it could have given US boaters a chance to show we are responsible. Responsible with our equipment, responsible with our attitudes, responsible with our patience as we work through this, and help deal with this in a positive way.

Sorry, people who are troubled by this don't seem to get it. We all need to get it,,,

And going to Iraq was a good thing because we've helped them form such a wonderful democracy.

Sure, it's better than Casitas, and no disrespect to those on the front lines of the Quagga War. However, it's pretty lame.

What happens when they find the Quagga in Castaic? Are they going to ban LA County as well?
