New State Record!!!-------- well, sorta!

Post by kopper_bass »

Guys,
Take a look at what i caught this weekend up on Trinity Lake. Yes, i said caught this; as this thing hit my line just like a fish and was fighting me to the boat. Even got caught up in the trolling motor.

I swung it in the boat without looking and said - "what is that"?
My non-boater, without hesitation and in all seriousness says " dude, i think you caught a lobster!" :D :D

This has got to be a state record, right? It was bigger than my hand, and don't even think of putting your finger near those pinchers. ouch!
The colors on this thing are just beautiful.

If you think you're throwing too big a bait, think again!!!

Kopper_Bass

ps - yes, this was also a catch & release!

For all you jig fishermen, note the brown/blue/orange/red and green all over that big boy..Cooch needs to chime in on this one, being the jig king..Just about every color we associate with summer time jig fishing could be found on this craw..It is kinda funny, we were discussing forage in Trinity the evening before the tournament and even on the day of the tournament and everyone kept saying there were no "dads" in Trinity..Obviously that was in error..I think the main forage base there is probably small kokanee and maybe rainbows..

Just out of curiosity, what did you catch it on?

A fine catch,

That one reminds me of the one we caught on a pond at Cascade Ranch in San Mateo county a number of years back. It was 15 inches long and the Fishery Biologist said it was the biggest one he had ever seen. I was afraid to pick it up but my Daughter did and sad to say, he was delicious.

I have been exploring the infamous Trinity tailings (that are usaually underwater) since last fall. I have found several swimbaits, Duh spoons (thanks John) and big a## crawdad parts. I was shocked the first time I saw the photo from this posting. But since then, I've seen countless clones to that one under rocks along the shore. I saw parts on a stump on the edge of the bank where something tore one apart. The tail was almost the width of my wrist. Must be something in Trinity's water.

SVBasser,

Have you been scuba diving in the lake? How have you been 'exploring'? I've always wanted to scuba some lakes around here to get a better idea of what I'm fishing. If'n that's what you were doing, I'm VERY jealous right now.

L Dub,
No scuba gear required since the lake is 100' down. The north end where the tailings are is pretty much a big flat where the town of trinity center used to be. There are old foundations and roads. Right now you can actually drive on the old roads and park at the tailings. Its pretty weird to walk through tailing piles that are 80 feet under water when the lake is full. Although I admit scuba diving my favorite fishin hole would be awesome, except I would be worrying about the loch-ness lobster.
