I guess it depends on who's definition of "trash" you go by but Jack Crevalles are actually highly regarded as far as gamefish go (but not as table fare). In many regions the smallmouth bass is considered a trash fish so it's all relative...

The guide didn't seem to have any interest in the Jack but after Ike landed the first one Ike said it was the hardest fighting fish he has ever hooked. He didn't have anything bad to say about the Jack prior to catching the first one except it was considered a trash fish and that's not what they were fishing for.
After he caught his second Jack he said those two fish saved the trip.
I would have gotten excited as well over catching a large exotic ocean fish (exotic compared to a bass).

Ive caught a few jack crevalles. . . and a few other species in the jack family like pompono

they are some of the hardest fighting fish out there and they can get huge

you can go out on some of the wrecks and reefs and catch 30-40lbers on poppers the size of punkers
i was too big chasing red fish to do this tough

unfortunately only back east and i think in the gulf

these big suckers turn to their sides and it is almost impossible
10+minute battles

they are more abundant in florida than where i fished but if you find a school like IKE did that will make your day

I just thought it was funny how he couldnt catch the fish he was actualy there to catch! (maybe his guide just sucked?)

However, it was very amusing to me that he tried to save face by making a big deal out of the fish he was catching,.. even though the "GUIDE" he was fishing with told him they were TRASH FISH!!!

during a Bass Tourney if all your catching is Big SQUAWFISH,you should follow the lil guys lead and make a Big deal out of it.

You could come to the scales with a 5 Squawfish Limit.

Im sure a few guys would get a laff out of it at the Weigh In!

I saw the show and he was not bad mouthing the Jacks they were catching as a matter of fact he was surprised the were considered trash fish and had a ball catching them , as far as flip flopping I did not see that either , you are amusing with this fascination about " The Little Guy" Is there something you need to tell us ?

For anyone badmouthing Ike, read his book first. His story is bittersweet and his fishing speaks for itself. He trully has made big sacrifices to be one of the best bass fisherman in the world.

It's obvious this guy just hates Ike, I mean he watches a show and doesn't actually see what is happening, instead he's making things up in his mind as the show plays. The show went absolutely nothing like you said it did. Ike didn't bad mouth the "trash fish" he had a hell of a good time catching the jacks, and who wouldn't? If I saw jack's boiling like they were I would have gave up on the reds and speckled trout too!

The Show as a concept is a Rip Off...Been done, he's a copycat.
Watch him speak, all rehearsed with a staff of PR people censoring him.
I actually thought he was gunna cry when his TOES were cold.
If you watch..Ike looked around for another USA flag to have a
tantrum with......

Ike is a Joke. Albeit a very short joke, but a joke and a clown.

Has fishing come to a point where one's personal life is criticized?
Who gives a damn what Ike does or doesn't do in his personal life.

Fishing should be about fishing and fishing related affairs. Regardless if Ike is liked or disliked, there is no denying he is a true talent and has brought a LOT of attention to the sport.

To be quite honest, I use to hate watching bass fishing programs because most of them were boring. Total lack of excitement.

Thanks to world class anglers such as KVD, Skeet, Ike, and Gerald making "noise" on ESPN, bass fishing is growing to soaring heights.

People from all over the world are completely indulged with bass fishing and it is good to see people from all types of background compete.

If I was in charge of a company's advertising campaign, I would definitely sponsor someone such as Ike because he is good at what he does and grabs attention to the fullest. Good or bad, he is consistently in front of the camera and certainly knows how to make the most of his air time.

Take the complete opposite- Aaron Martens. Super nice guy, probably a great family man, incredible stick.... but his mono-tone voice and lack of enthusiasm in front of the camera makes boring television. Great guy, but how great is he for the growth of the sport (grabbing the attention of people who have no idea what bass fishing)?

Ike is definitely a little off on camera, but I bet he is more normal in his regular life. He is trying to draw attention to himself with his antics. I would have liked to see that show. I grew up in south FL and did a lot of salt water fishing. The Jacks are fun to catch and fight very well, almost like a small tuna. The Jack Crevelle is not good to eat and the Skip Jack has poisonous spines so many consider them trash fish. BTW Those who have caught a Pompano are very lucky because they are very good eating, but extremely rare. Most people catch African Pompano's which are more common and not quite as good to eat.

He was wearing clothes for warm weather and his guide was dressed for the COLD WEATHER they were actually fishing in.

But as a kid we would go to the River View in Antioch and fish for Carp, Yes I said Carp.......GREAT BIG CARP< Like 20 to 30 pound CARP & larger

We used 80 pound Dacron line, pen reels, boat pols as big around as your wrist, 4 to 8 oz sinkers with the metal skirt around em and a number 1ought hook, with 60 pound leader.

Made my own dough bait the night before and let it cure with bacon fat in the fridge the night before.........Next day we would go out on their dock and fish between the broken pier boards in the deck.

Lower it down to the bottom, between the planks and hang on for dear life. You ever try to reel up a 30 pound thrashing fish up 20 feet vertical ? We gave the fish to the tourist, said they tasted just like trout

Man oh man!!!!! Those were the days, nothing better to do with ourselves than fish and chase girls. cruse with the top down, 18th street in Antioch in a bright red and black 55 Mercury with a large block v-eight and cherry bomb glass pack mufflers, Stop in at Hazels drive in for a burger and Fry's and a coke. cost a buck fifty and gas was 21 cents a gallon.
