transome savers/new style...old style
transome savers/new style...old style
I've been seeing more guys using a newer style transome saver that blocks up underneath outboards as compared to the more typical type that goes from lower unit to boat trailer. Any comments regarding the newer type? Seems to me they don't really gain any support from anything....thanks
Re: transome savers/new style...old style
What the "new" type does is simply relieve the weight of the motor from the hydraulic tilt/trim pistons themselves. Depending on the type they will place that weight either on the hydraulic cylinder or onto the motor mount itself.
Alot of folks like the simplicity of it, they also like not having to be concerned with the "old" type falling off & "pole-vaulting" the back of the boat while you are traveling down the highway.
Another thought is that it's hard on the transom to have that engine bouncing on it the whole time you are traveling unless you use the "old" style. But then you have to wonder how much of a beating the transom takes while you are under way anyway, so what the heck??
You'll get good arguments from either side. I stick with the "old school" transom saver myself.

New School is the way to go, I've been using the newer type for three years now without a problem. It's nice being able to store it in one of my boats rear compartment and paired with retractable tie downs makes prepping my boat for the road after a long day of fishing a breeze. I also like the idea that my engine isn't bouncing against my boats trailer while trailering.

If you don't travel very far the new style is easy to use and store, but I feel better when driving any distance, especially over some of those bouncy delta roads with my boat / trailer / motor all moving as one unit vrs having the weight of the motor bouncing against the transom..
Any old seven pounder will make my day better...

I agree with Gimpy.
I have both of them. I use the newer model when I'm staying close to the house, and throw the older one on when I travel.

I had to come back...I know...

Here is something to ponder
What does the "Old Style" do to your trailer by transferrin the bounce of the boat/motor to the rear cross bar?
The main purpose of a transom saver is to prevent the motor bouncing on the transom not to relieve the weight of the motor.
By the way...the motor still bounces against the transom with "Old Style"
it pass some of that shock to the rear cross bar of the trailer as well as energy from the boat if it bounces any (HWY 4 from Stockton to Bethel Island will really does give it a work out
)

ps. I had the welds on rear cross bar on my last trailer crack from using the "Old Style" transom saver...and yes, it even happened with "spring loaded" style. My sister had the same problem showing up on her trailor until she went to the "new style". After using the "new style" no new damage

Re: transome savers/new style...old style
I have been using the new style for about four years without any problems. I always wondered about the trailer shock to the motor and transome with the old style. Plus it has never come off like the old style did.
