A Solution to Man-Made Global Warming

Post by Marty »

There are apparently tens of millions of people around the world who are convinced global warming is real, and mankind (particularly American mankind) is responsible. Further, they believe utterly catastrophic results are imminent unless we drastically alter our lifestyles -- and soon. These alterations include the things we eat, our transportation, our daily work and leisure habits, and even the number of children we should have. The problem is there are also tens of millions of people around the world who are skeptical of this theory, and, despite one side’s claims the debate is settled, a significant and growing number of climate experts keep challenging their conclusions.

So, those who believe disaster is around the corner face a dilemma: while they’re educating their fellow citizens and demanding governments regulate believers and non-believers alike, the problem continues, and the date of the world’s doom draws ever closer. But there is a solution. It’s relatively simple, can begin immediately, and will change the dynamics of global warming overnight. Instead of continuing to preach to the rest of us, the true believers need to step forward and set an example. I’m not talking about recycling Evian bottles; I’m talking about giving up cars and moving into smaller houses or apartments, or even forming communes where people can live simpler, more Earth-friendly lives. Yes, I’m talking about living the kinds of lives they want all of us to live.

Such a movement could literally start tomorrow. It would need a leader, of course; someone who could inspire others to choose a more spartan lifestyle. The obvious choice would be Al Gore, who already has a loyal following. If he would eschew large homes, gas-guzzling cars, private jets and the consumption of meat, millions more would likely do the same. If enough people joined the cause, Mr. Gore and his followers would be able to demonstrate the results of this new way of living in very short order. They could lead by example. They could create a movement. They could have uniforms and badges and secret handshakes. The could have their own reality TV show. In short, they could become a major force for change. Carmakers would be driven out of business or forced to dramatically alter their products to meet the demands of this eco-friendly Gorian tsunami. Companies of all stripes would, similarly, have to adapt or perish.

Once the rest of us saw the presumed reversal (or at least slowing-down) of global warming, it would do more to convince us than any lecture or study signed by UN scientists, and it would likely add millions more to the cause. So what if you can’t get one-hundred percent co-operation initially? Wouldn’t half (or a third or a quarter) of the population make a huge difference if they made substantial sacrifices? You could argue it wouldn’t be fair to have some of us going on abusing the planet and leading our lives of consumption and gluttony while others are putting aside the trappings of modern life, but this isn’t about fairness; it’s about survival.

The time for talk is over. The time for action is now. Just think of millions and millions of committed Americans making the personal sacrifices necessary to demonstrate their resolve to combat man-made global warming. And, most important, thanks to their efforts, theory would be replaced by fact. It’s much easier to argue about a study than it is to refute the demonstrable results when the temperature drops and the ocean levels stabilize. When future generations write of the sacrifices of these men and women, they’ll use words like “inspirationalâ€

Great ideas. But what about the polar ice caps on Mars. It is a well known fact that other planets have cycles of warming and cooling periods, and Mars is currently in a warming cycle... no doubt caused by my SUV and gas guzzling bass boat. What sacrifices can we make to save other planets?

So global warming does not exist? Let's say you are right and there is no such thing as global warming, do you think it would hurt the environment if we tried to cut back on greenhouse gases or maybe find an alternative fuel source? The answer to these questions should be NO. And since it won't hurt the environment and since global warming does exist wether it be man made or just a natural cycle why not cut back on greenhouse gases?

Maybe you feel it is too big a choice for you to make, the world seems fine to you, bass are growing bigger in California, the fishing season will last a little longer, not so much snow and rain to ruin your trips and you can use less heat in the winter? All is good for you NOW, what about your children or grandchildren? Why don't you sit them on your knee one day and tell them you did not want to make a tough choice and your gonna just leave the problem for them to figure out?

Luckily there are people on this earth that can see a problem before it's too late, before it smacks them in the face with rising sea levels, higher temps, more pollution, less food and so on. No one is asking people to live like they did in the stone age they are just asking people to cut back a little, drive a car with a little better mileage, or use an outboard that gets better fuel economy, turn your lights out when not in use that's all.

If everyone on the globe did just a little it surely could not hurt the environment or the economies of the world to just "Cut Back"

"I want to ask ten serious questions to which I have been unable to find definitive answers:" Do you think FishaHallic that you can answer them?

"1. What is the perfect temperature?
If we are to embark on a lifestyle-altering quest to lower the temperature (or at least minimize its rise), what is our goal? I don’t ask this flippantly. Can we demonstrate that one setting on the global thermostat is preferable over another? If so, what is it, and how do we get there? And, once there, how do we maintain it? Will we ever have to “heat things upâ€

1. Don’t know
2. Don’t know
3. Volcanoes
4. Marty, I take it by reading some of your post in this section that you are a republican correct? If so maybe your president can answer this question better than I since he won’t let his climate scientist make a speech without it being gone over by the presidents political operatives to make sure the speech does not clash with the white house slanted views. Meanwhile studies done by NASA show the world is warming.
5. On this point I will agree with you. If you notice when people talk about things they tend to exaggerate like when we went into Iraq the first time, they were predicting we would lose thousands of troops and in this case with rising seas I also have noticed that the #s are all over the place. I don’t know the answer but I do know it will only take a few feet of rising seas to inundate Florida (where I just moved from btw).
6. Yes, you might be able to say some may benefit from global warming but I think it will pale in comparison to the harm it will do.
7. “While there are good arguments for changing some of our environmental policies, should they be based on “what it?â€

Great posts Marty. You hit it right on the head.

I am a biologist and currently working as an environmental consultant... so I have some knowledge about the way things are. There is nothing wrong with clean air! There is nothing wrong with energy efficient homes! There is nothing wrong with energy efficient vehicles that lessen our dependence on foreign oil. The part that is WRONG is the way this is being shoved down our throats in the name of global warming. Even Gores top scientist (and fellow nobeloriat) called it the "biggest hoax in human history". Those who blindly spout the virtues of their newfound green religion are being played like a fiddle. FOLLOW THE MONEY! Who is making money on a "documentary" of half-truths and exaggerations? Who's company is currently raking in the $$$ selling carbon offsets? Who pulled himself up from obscurity after losing an election, to a position of godhood in the eyes of his ignorant followers? You know the answer. There is no constant or perfect temperature on this planet. We are always in a cycle of heating or cooling and there is very little, if anything, that we can do about it. I, for one, am planning on capitalizing on your ignorance! How is that for capitalism? I started a solar installation company so that I can make all of you liberals feel better about yourselves... Cha-CHING!

I would hardly call myself a liberal but I am certainly far from a right wing conservative.

Admitedly I know nothing of what is going on in California since I just moved to Nevada from Florida in the last year so I can't speak on the things in CA. But I can say that I don't feel like anything is being shoved down my throat.

Maybe we all are paying or will be paying more to keep the greenhouse gases down but that is just helping keep our air cleaner is it not, with the added benifit of less green house gases. Fresher cleaner air and less green house gas, seems like a win win situation. We can't keep pumping polluted exhuast into the atmosphere without negative inpacts especially now that India and China and alot of asian countries are polluting the air at an enormous rate. The world needs the United States to step up and do there part and maybe just maybe some of the other larger polluters will step up also.

As far as who is making money off of selling carbon offsets, that is a good question. But, I don't know of anyone buying carbon offsets so I know of no one who is donating to the moneymakers as you call it. If you don't care about carbon offsets don't buy them, I don't.

One last thing, you say you started a solar installation company well that is just great. This country needs as many alternative fuel sources as possible and if it is clean and renewable energy then that's even better. Are you hiring in Reno by any chance?

[“Current ethanol mandates are already producing serious shortages in other parts of the world, as farmland that had been producing food shifts to ethanol to chase hundreds of millions of dollars of government subsidies coming out of your pocket. There were riots in Mexico earlier this year in response to spiraling tortilla prices. We’re seeing this across the board – including commodities like milk and beef that are responding to increased prices for corn feed. And as you see your grocery prices rise as a result of this policy, just be glad you’re not in the Third World. Food is a relatively small portion of the family incomes in affluent nations, but they consume more than half of family earnings in third world countries. So when the global warming alarmists predict worldwide starvation, they’re right. They’re creating it.â€

FishaHallic,

This is real fast – I’m off to work!

As for the food prices I was more referring about the cost we have to pay – in either case you only need a little more work on you before you become a full blown conservative.

If you ever want to fish the Delta send me a PM that way you will be a captive audience and I can finish my work!
