Great timing, I'm getting married in July. Could have used the advice 6 months ago when I proposed.

My wife is great. She was the one who said it was time to sell the Alum. ranger and get a real fiberglass bass boat. Of course she prefers that I don't go away for the weekend but no problem letting me fish both Saturday and Sunday locally. She just wants me home for bed.

Re: For the young guy's out there
NOW FOR ALL YOU YOUNG GUYS OUT THERE. I've been married for 43 years to the same women & been fishing tourn. since the mid 70's. I fish about 50 tourns. a year & still work 45 hrs. a week. I have 14 kids 10 are adopted,10 are still at home ages 3 through 26. My secret is if you stay busy you will enjoy your time fishing & your time at home. No one ask if I'm fishing this week end, it is where are you fishing & when will you be home. They will always be waiting for me to tell me everything that happened & how did I do. Just remember when you decide to get married there is alot of give & take , much more give than take.

Re: For the young guy's out there
It all come down to one word.
BALANCE!
Fishing is fun and addicting but you always have to remember family comes first. That's where most guys have problems. They don't know how to balance things. My wife and daughter are alot more important then fishing. Don't get me wrong I love to fish but I can't imagine waking up and not seeing my family.

Re: For the young guy's out there
Big_gorilla,
You hit the nail on the head. My wife has always been very supported of my fishing and lure making. But, to much can be to much. Wives need the companionship and father figure for the kids around the house. I have let my wife do to much over the years by her self and that was wrong. I have stepped up to the plate and relized this. Don't get me wrong my wife and I love each other very much. But it takes two to make a marriage. You can think that they are happy with you fishing alot, but you could lose alot later. Wives want nothing more than to make there man happy but the mean time they need to be happy also. I'am sorry if I lead anyone to belive that I did'nt love my wife. I was just going through a bad time in my life. If you love them take care of them and communicate with them it's important.

Re: For the young guy's out there
If you look at the facts,
In 100% of the divorces,
a woman was involved.
I'm just sayin'....
In my own case, after adding it all up, my divorce cost about $500,000. Not counting the added expenses long after it was done.
Ya that's a hell of a lot,
but lookin' back on it now, I can truly say,
It was worth every penny!

Re: For the young guy's out there
I can relate. I was married to the same woman for 32 years, been divorced for 10 years now, and my divorce was VERY EXPENSIVE too. But, as has already been expressed before, it was well worth the money to end it and get out. There is GOOD LIFE after divorce !!!! Of course, you can't afford to retire and will have to work until you die... Heh HEh

The other thing I didn't mention previously is that this is the second for both of us... took us twice each to get it right (so far!). Everyone has to do what it takes to be happy in life, as life is far too short to be miserable or unhappy.

Re: For the young guy's out there
Did for 17 years, 2 beautiful daughters, house, cars, motorcycle everything but a boat. She walked 5 years ago, thought she saw greener pastures, tried to get her to come back but....... Sold the house, motorcycle for squat but we are still friends for our children sake and yes I still see them (just not as much as I would like). She has already found someone else (just won't get married yet, she would lose out on the alimony for god sakes). Myself, I found Bass fishing (thanks to K. Ripa). Four more years of support payments at $1818.00 a month, then its time for Johnny to get his boat....until then...anyone got a open back seat????????? Oh and as far as another lady....as long as she understands my love for fishing or even likes to fish herself, but I'm not going to rush into anything. Being alone isn't so bad once you get use to it.

Dakine198,
Could have been more but they took mercy to a certain extent.
Any time you want to go fishing, I'm game. I am more then willing to throw in for Gas and even make a Killer sandwich I've been told. So yeah, let me know. BTW, that is very cool of you to offer.

been married 3 times, still married. besides legitimitly I lived with 7 other women for more than 2 years. Marriage is better designed for the female than the male. If It goes bad we get the shiity end of the stick unless your a (stud) kept man (shes gots all da joe)!!!!
Re: For the young guy's out there
Man ain't complete till he's married.
Then he's finished!
She decided where she's gonna keep your twins yet?
Some women like to put em out on display with the other little useless nic nacs for her friends to giggle at.
Others hide 'em thinkin you might try to actually reclaim them sometime.

For anyone else thinking of steppin off that plank.... Think about this.
Imagine the most contemptable person you can. Lowest of the low. Some one you hate with all your soul.
Now think about givin' them half your stuff.

been married for over 19 years and been with her for over 24. Have 2 boys 12 and 14 and my best friend in the world "Boris" my Chocolate Lab. I fish as much or more than anyone I know.....hasn't been a problem at all and the one I miss the most when I'm gone for more than 2-3 days is ....you guessed it......BORIS!! My advice to my kids......brush your teeth 2x per day.....do good in school.....finish college and wait until your 30 to even think about marriage and or kids

There is nothing wrong with marriage....
Yep-Don't fool yourself. Marriage is like anything else in life-It's what you make it.
Funny thing is that every one of the men that mentioned bad experiences with a woman during marriage blamed the women as opposed to taking some ownership in what they (the man) "may" have done to attribute to a divorce. To me that would be the first indicator of not being mature enough to get and/or stay married.
Being married is the one of the toughest challenges in life, second only maybe to being a parent. I will say that you should never get married unless you are making the decision for yourself. Don’t let people pressure you into something that you are not ready to do.
I have been married for 7 years, I got married at a fairly young age right out of college while I was trying to chase these little green fish all over the Western US and start a professional career in my field. As a matter of fact I had a tournament the week of and the week after my wedding. My wife knew what she was getting herself into from the get-go. That’s why I married her.
At some point a person has to take some ownership for the things that happen in their life and look inward to see what role you play in the outcomes. My marriage is working because I want it work and strive for balance in the time that I spend fishing and the time that I take my wife on vacations where I invest time in her. I also told my wife that I would never put my family in a situation where fishing takes away from her livelihood or her way of life and I haven’t (knock on wood).
There is nothing wrong with marriage, however there is something wrong with doing it for the wrong reasons and the idea that people are not willing to invest the same time and energy as they may invest in something such as bass fishing.
Off my soap box…..PS. Being married has never gotton in the way of prefishing....

Re: There is nothing wrong with marriage....
Yeah, pretty easy to stand on the soap box and say nobodies taking the blame. My post was simple and not really blaming anyone. She made the decision to walk, she had her reasons and they are valid for what she wants out of life. I wanted to stay married, begged and pleaded to find a different way. She did not want that. It just didn't work out. We raised two children together, both of whom are outstanding students, my oldest works 40 hours a week and also goes to school. Their mother and I worked very hard at making them the people they are today. If you knew me at all you would understand that I love my family very much (yes, including my ex) but when a person decides to change something in their life, you can not force them to stop.
But to have a person who's been married less then half the time I was try and pass judgement and call me immature, well that says something for their maturity. To you Ricky I say "good for you and keep up that effort", I'm glad you found someone who works for you and I pray it will last for you, at 7 seven years my ex and I were rolling along pretty good too. But please don't pass judgement on such a broad spectrum, not everything is black and white. And sometimes a spade is a spade.

Hey John and anyone else,
I am not passing judgement on you on anyone else. I was merely stating what I read in the posts, which was a bunch of what the women did and not a single thing about what "we" do as men.
Balance my friend, balance. There are always three sides to every story. The truth is usually somewhere in between what each person sees as their perception.
We all struggle for balance, and a marriage can be the best or worst decision that anyone makes in their life.
