Adding trailer brakes......

Post by Gator »

The recent topic regarding tow vehicles brings me to another interesting question.....how hard/how much expense would it be to retrofit disc brakes to a current trailer without them??

I am curious as I have a 94 boat (currently considering a new one but want all options open) without brakes.

Hey Gator, you could probably find a used trailer with brakes that'll fit your boat for less than the cost of adding brakes to yours... You have an 18 footer, right?

Yep....I was just pondering the idea.......seems like something to think about if you don't buy one with brakes.......

Gator,

I had a 1990 363V Ranger that I had a company in Sacramento called DHM Trailers put surge brakes on. They had to put on another axle and a new tongue on the trailer in addition to the brakes(drum). I don't remember why I chose drum, but I wouldn't do it again. They charged me $700 in 1994. They did excellent work and I never had an issue with their work for the 12 years I had the boat/trailer. I didn't care for the drums in retrospect as there was no self adjuter, so I don't know when the brakes really stopped working. I believe that is why disc are better.

DHM is on the internet.

Hope this helps,

Phil
