Leave the rattlers alone also. They are good to keep down the mice and rats. They dont harm people people harm them. They will leave you alone if you leave them alone.

Are we ever gonna get you to turn the caps off on your posts Jigs? With each and every post you make in this fashion it looks as if you're literally screaming at us all.
This is simple to do. You have a CAPS LOCK key on your keyboard. Many of them actually have a light on the key to let you know that it's on and when it is on everything you type LOOKS LIKE THIS.
Thanks for your understanding,

Re: RATTLESNAKES
I dont know why I even post on these websites. Always some one gets their panties in a ruffle. I have had many experiences with rattlers more than you would know. Go to texas for a rattle snake round up and you will find they are just like any other snake. Dosile in the morning and just another snake in the afternoon. with the exception they are poisoness. If the general public was educated about them there wouldnt be as many accidents. That was all I was saying. SO I will say again If you see one leave it alone. If you are around where they are be aware and carefull how you go about your gardening

Wife took this Pic late last month with the boys at Loma. I zoomed in as much at I could on the PC and it looks like it mostly was a Gopher -- But you never know for sure and the last thing I want is another vet bill for Cobalt

Re: RATTLESNAKES
Jigs,
Funny (not) coincidence. Last week, I found and killed a juvenile Pacific rattler on my front porch. My 13 year old daughter was just about to walk her dog, and I came out to tell her something, and saw it next to a screened foundation vent near the front door.
Now I live in Los Angeles, near LAX, in a part of town that's miles from any wetlands, open fields, or other suitable habitat for rattlers.
I called animal control, and they came out in 30 minutes. The officer said she'd never seen a rattler in our neighborhood in all her years, and couldn't find a record of one on her computer.
I guess it was someones pet that escaped and wound up on my door. When I went door to door to warn my neighbors, who have small kids and pets, too, no one 'fessed up to having lost it.
Weird. And worrisome. After all, either it was a "pet" that got lose, or there is a female in the neighborhood that bred. They bear live young, so a pregnant female that escaped could have dropped this one, although it was 18" long.
It was right under my mail box. Flashbacks to Synanon, and they idiots who planted rattlers with the rattles removed in people's mail boxes.
My mind started searching my memory for who I could have pissed off enough to do something like that. Not likely, but it was such a surprise I didn't know what to think.
And both my daughter and I had dreams about snakes for the next few nights.
Anyway, baby rattlers are the most dangerous, since they haven't learned how to control their venom, and let go with a full load every time the strike.
So be careful.

My buddy got a snake bite right in his privates. I got on the cell and called the doctor.
The doctor. said, "Make a small x shaped incision then suck the poison out."
My buddy said, "What'd he say?"
I said, "He said, 'You're going to die!"

Born and Raised in Texas and I dont know where in Texas you come from but Rattlers are just that mean. They are a cold blooded creature so in the Texas winter you dont see many but as soon as the weather warms they come out in full force.
My friends and I would always run across em when huntin with our pellet guns or fishing Kelly's pond. They will warn with a rattle but by that time most people are right on top of em
We shot everyone we could find. They are not endangered and they cant read so when they wounder into populated areas they are eratticated. Now dont get me wrong I have personally witnessed the rattlesnake round up and the DEEP SOUTHERN BAPTIST There thinking was is the snake bit you it clensed your sins
Yea Them there are some crazy rednecks.
Now Water Moccassin's and Cotton Mouths are another story a water moccassin will strike under water and kill you it will drown in doin so but it will still strike.

I agree when you see them out away from people leave them alone.

Re: RATTLESNAKES
I got rattles hanging in my office from ones that I have killed over the years, even found one in our warehouse a couple of years ago sitting on a shelf! Hes dead too..
If you get bit don't panic it raises your heart rate, and will cause the venom to go through your body faster. Never cut around the wound, or try to suck out the poison. go to an emergency room asap! Stay as calm as you can.
If you kill a rattler get rid of the head, even when dead there is still venom in the sacs behind the fangs, and if played with by someone else and poked its just like getting bit!
Rattle snakes are not typically aggressive, most bites come from someone either startling them, or stepping on them on accident.

Thanks for the heads-up on the rattlers. I ain't out to kill them (although I have killed a few), but I would just as soon avoid them, if at all possible.

PS: This has been quite a thread - from rattlers, to caps, to panties, to gardening, to bumps, to control keys, to mouse wheels, to privates (a VERY old joke BTW), to K-Mart. to Wal-Mart. Phew! I think we're about done with it (although it was a fun thread). That is unless somebody "bumps" it.
PPS: Hey Jigs - a bump is a one-word reply (usually the word "bump") to bring (or bump) the thread back to the top of the page.
PPPS: That's a gopher snake Dan. It looks to be a pretty good sized one, too. I use to raise them when I was a kid. I grew one to about six feet, which is pretty big for a gopher snake: http://www.desertusa.com/mag99/july/pap ... snake.html

Ya I thought I could get by with recycling it, but you bass fisherman probably heard em all 30 times. Before Lynette was a game warden in Lake County, see owned a pet shop in Sonoma. I wheeled in there one day and felt a bump. Then I heard a loud hiss. I looked down to see a 6 ft long gopher snake coiled around my front tire. I was unable to move a muscle. A guy looked down from the balconey and said, "Wow, he got loose 6 months ago, Don't move."Ron C wrote:

Far as rattlers, I come from way up North in Mendocino County where there are plenty so we kill the ones we find on our property knowing there will be another to take it's place shortly. We crazy rednecks don't eat 'em though!!! Maybe some Rocky Mountain Oysters, but never a damn rattler!!!

Re: RATTLESNAKES
I got the pleasure of living with a herpetologists (that means he studies reptiles) for a year. He milked rattlesnakes for the venom to be made into anti-venom. It was truly an awesome experience. You learn to respect the creatures and learn that they, much like bass, and cats and dogs, have their own personalities and quirks. At the peak we had 16 adult rattlers living in our house, 6 of which were less than 20ft from my bed. I wasn't scared at all. Under no circumstance would they just come to attack me. I thought that kind of thinking was a thing of the past, but apparently not. A rattlesnake has too much at stake to start a fight with something bigger than it. The main use of their venom is to immobilize their prey.
As a kid I used to kill rattlesnakes thinking I was doing a service to society. Now I wish I hadn't. I now realize that they have much more to offer us. They are diverse, spectacular creatures that offer a lot to us in terms of pest control and wildlife populations. They kill problematic rodents that dig ankle breaking holes in horse and cattle pastures. They are food for king snakes, hawks, and eagles which most outdoorsmen would admire.
Don't be fooled by ignorant tall tales of vicious rattlesnakes on the prowl for victims. They have a finite supply of venom. Why would they waste it on something they cant eat. Respect their beauty and presence from a distance and it will give you space as well.
If you have problems with snakes anywhere in norcal, pay me gas money and I'll come move it somewhere far far away from anyones house.

With all due repect Ryan when you see as much as we do you want to protect your family so we will dispose of them.
I grew up as a kid hunting Bobcat's and Mountain Lion's.
It was rare to get the Lion's but we got our share. The F&G paid my Dad 200 buck's for every one we brought in.Looking back was it the right thing to do,probably not.
Now Domestic Animal's and on ocassion Human's are being confronted by Mountain Lion's sometime's in Urban area's.
Why....becouse the population has increased by alot due to protection which is good......but to what degree.
We have seen an increase year to year in Rattlesnake's yet the wholw Damn world is doomed becouse of Global Warming so what the heck huh.

What population are you referring to? Because I agree, the human population and encroachment into mountain lion habitat has increased dramatically in recent years.CN wrote:

I understand the part about protecting your family. I think (and I'm sure you have done this) the best thing to do is educate them on what to do when they see or hear a rattlesnake. give the snake space, leave it alone. Most rattlesnake bites occur when people are trying to catch or kill the snake. Make sure they know what rattlesnake habitat is like. Dry areas near rocky outcrops. Dappled shade in tall grass near cover. They are much like bass, but on land. Wood piles, rock piles, agricultural equipment.
Where do you live? I was only semi-joking about the last part of my original post. My herpetologist friend runs a humane snake removal business in the bay area. He is out of town doing research for some time though, so I would step in.

Yea when I was a teen we stopped off at "THE BIG TEXAN" in Amarillo,Tx had the rattler and tried the Mountain Oysters also, can't say I liked either one very much at all.

Re: RATTLESNAKES
The only one I have ever killed (it was in Texas, and legal) was about 4 feet long, and I had visions of making a belt out of it. I did cook it, and found the meat to taste okay, but so bony as to not be worth the trouble. The meat was more like crab in texture, maybe because I deep fried the hell out of it.
Deer hunting near Big Pine one year I came upon a sidewinder rattlesnake sunning itself on the road. Not a very big guy, and pretty cool with the horns on its head, like a miniature dragon. I probably burned two rolls of film whiled it posed for me.
Considering all the problems rodents can cause, I'd probably say leave rattlers alone, other than move them from areas where kids and pets might be.

Re: RATTLESNAKES
Nothing worse than stepping off the front deck and finding one of those nasty critters coiled up under the consol. Happened to a friend at San Antonio last year. Ya think he didnt do a jig getting that sucker out of the boat, lucky he had a heavy rod on the deck foul hooked the mother and sent the whole pakage over the side pays to check first no second chances with rattlers
Any day on the lake is a great day
