"Fishing Coaches" needed for kids in Chico

Post by Steve Carson »

It's that time of year again.
The huge "Hooked on Fishing" children's event will take place in Chico on May 31 from 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Horseshoe Lake in Upper Bidwell Park in Chico.
This is the largest single-day children's fishing event in the USA!
Depending on weather, we will have between 2,000 and 4,000 kids show up to catch their first fish.
One of the key organizers is the Chico Bass Club.
Our number one need is for "fishing coaches" to help the kids at the water's edge.
We have plenty of local volunteers to run the shuttle buses, etc., but fishing talent is always in short supply, and if we got 100 anglers to help it would not be too many!
We don't need your boat, your money or your expensive tackle, just YOU, a pair of pliers and a smile for the kids.

Bump
Was hoping this could get pinned as "sticky"
Regardless, thanks in advance for all who can come up to Chico and help insure the future of our sport.

Yes, we will stock 10,000 pounds [!] of catfish, mostly 1 and 2 pounders, but at least one tankful of 4 to 8 pounders.
Also hoping to get a few lunkers over 10 pounds.
The Chico Bass Club also gives a prize to any young angler who releases one of Horseshoe Lake's resident bass.
The DFG's "Fishing Passport" program will have a booth set up, so Kids can get their "passport" stamped when they catch one of the stocked channel cats, or any of the lakes' indigenous species which also include black crappie, white crappie, bullheads, bluegill, green sunfish and carp.

Unfortunately, Bidwell Park does not permit overnight camping.
The gate closes at around 7:30 PM, and I think will re-open at 6:00 AM on the event day.
A few volunteers may be parking their motor homes in the parking lot of the Elks Lodge, immediately adjacent to the entrance of the park.
There will be shuttles going up to the lake from there.
