Frog Rod Recommendations

Post by SHAFT »

I am using a Quantum Pt Tour 7' H and I am happy with it but I want a longer handle for better leverage and when I swing to the side on the hook set I pin the handle between my arm and side which hits me right in the ribs when the frog bite is on my side is sore for days. Around 17" from center of the reel seat to end of handle would be prefect , here's the kicker I can't justify spending a lot of money say $100 max . I am not a technical angler give a broom stick and I'm good , what are you guys using as far as length , weight , and action and what brand would you recommend in my price range . Thanks

check out the Lamiglas 806,That is my favorite all around frog rod but when you hhave to go into the thick stuff I mean really nasty water the lamiglas 797 gets the nod for pure horsepower and get em headed to the boat! good luck tight lines. P.S. The best thing to do is try someone elses rod and try as many diff brands untill you find one that works for you.

For what you are looking for I'd say the Crucial as well.....it's hard to get a quality froggin rod for less than $100. If you wanted to go up in price just a bit, I'd recommend the Dobyn's 736........awesome rod that is great for froggin..........for $189....you can also use it for pitchin and flippin.......let me know if you want to try one out.......

Best one I've found is the Dobyns 735C ... nice and light and would wreck your arms and shoulders after a days froggin'

Although slightly above yer price range, the Fenwick EliteTech Froggin Stik (ECF72H-XF) is an outstanding froggin rod, and it can double up as the perfect pitchin/flippen jig rod too!

The 735C is a very durable rod and the best frog rod I've ever used. Of course there are some that want to bash everytime Dobyns are mentioned, whether they know what they're talking about or not! I've been using mine for a year this month and caught at least 3 over 10 on it and mine hasn't broken yet.

I don't post on here just lurk. This is one of the best sites I have found for information. But bashing company's like this is the very reason I don't go to BFHP any more. Thanks for all the good posters on here the swimbait info you put out have been very helpful.

Not bashing the company, just saying that the rod mentioned I have seen fail 3 times. Just because you support a product does not mean it is perfect as my assessment does not mean it is a faulty product. We should all give true examples of equipment experiences. I have given mine on the 735. That does not mean it is a bad rod I just think it is not well suited for the claim. In my experience this rod is not a good match for heavy braid.

I too broke my Dobyns 735 fishing a frog partially my fault as i was pulling a fish with too much salad with 65lb. braid.
I have no reason to bash and like the Dobyns line of rods but i switched to loomis 874 for my frog applications esp fishing heavy slop.
I like to hear everyones opinion as it gives me info on my next purchase, I have heard good things about the fenwick EliteTech rods also.

Well if we are going to keep thread jacking, The Loomis MBR844C heavy is about the best frog rod I've used. I did pick up a fenwick elitetech to try out as a flipping rod and it seems to be a nice rod too.

Longshot -- There are MANY upon MANY threads for most and more-so for some more popular rod makers that you are interested in learning about.

My suggestion would be to Use the Search Function here on WesternBass. ~~> http://westernbass.com/forum/search.php
~ Tackle Tour's Review's ~~> http://www.tackletour.com/menurods.html - Their Forums as well ~~> http://www.tackletour.net/TTForums/

And most importantly -- Your Local pro-shop - if available - so you can judge what is best "for you".

Cheers,
Dan
You know, we always called each other goodfellas. Like, you'd say to somebody: "You're gonna like this guy; he's all right. He's a goodfella. He's one of us." You understand? We were goodfellas, wiseguys.

all the rods mentioned are good ones, but as we speak falcon rods and bobby barrack have teamed up to produce bobbys perfect frog rod , we have been testing this rod for a year now, and its our opinion by far the best frog rod there is bar none!! along with being the best punching rod we have ever used
its 7'10, well balanced and light with the perfect blend of a parabloic bend and plenty of pop to move em!!
you can contact gene at the hook or john at waltons pond and if that doesn't work go to www.falconrods.com and get your hands on one, trust me once you check it out you will never throw a frog or punch with anything else.
see ya on the river

For my $ it's the powell 735. However if you're looking to just frog in the slop, cheese, etc. bump up to the 766.

Lamiglas 766 is the only way to go. Check one out. Then try the 7:1 zillion to really snap them out of the grass.

Although some guys like the longer rods for froggin' (7' 2"+), my preference is a 7' H, fast action Shimano Clarus. I feel I have better control of the frog with the slightly shorter rod and also find it easier to "walk the frog". I've caught hundreds of frog fish on this rod using 65# Power Pro and never had one problem. In addition, it's well under $100 ($69 most places) and still has a $15 over-the-counter lifetime guarantee.

Hope this helps.

I have that Daiwa and love it, lightweight and breaks down nice.

If I were to do it again I would buy another Dobyns 766 for a few extra $.

I currently have the Daiwa Light and Tough frog rod, it's alright for the money, but I prefer using the Dobyns 766 for frogs.
