Lunker Punker

Post by jiggin_pimpin »

Hey guys,

Just got a new Lunker Punker and I want to test it out ASAP! But first, I wanted to know what type of knots are you guys using and why? Any feedback will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

I just tie a palomar knot directly to the split ring.

Rodger only knows lakes  I dont know why Gorilla said it. And I'm only talking about Punkers, big wake baits and Frogs. Mono on the rest of it.

Is that because lake typically have clearer water? Is it a visibility thing? I don't use braid at all right now but want to start messing around with it for different applications. Just trying to learn something here!

IMO, Braid floats better than Mono. You will have to ask them why they dont use it. But in the Delta you are pulling fish through the junk alot of the time and I would rather be using Braid.

I like the strength of braid but dont like the visibality of it, so I use a 25# big game leader. Been using it on my wakebaits too. So far so good. Strait braid for frogs

Use braid for the punker I use 65, but I know some guys like 80 i just use the same rod for a couple other baits and i dont want the 80 for those baits. The heavier braid will allow for less line in the hooks when casting and walking the bait.

For the knot I prefer the Trilene I end up going through a lot less braid then with a palomar, i ended up cutting off too many tag ends in a day with the palomar knot which resulted in going through my line faster so now I use a trilene knot for all my braid, it holds really well also.

What knot do you use to connect the mono to the braid?

I have just been using the clinch knot.I'm sure there are better out there, but it has worked for me.

Mike have you ever try a surgeons knot to join your leader? Tippet to leader in fly-fishing kind of thing.

I recommend using either the Palomar knot or the San Diego knot. I throw the Punker on braid because, as you are soon to find out, you can cast this bait a mile and a half! The braid makes it easier to walk while your bait is way out there, and if you get hit, the minimal stretch of braid gives you a better hook set.

Good luck!

Hey Gents,

Thanks for all the replies. I'm going to be throwing the plunker with 50-66lb braid and the palomar knot.

Thanks again all.

No, but I have watched a bunch of my Hudds (4 I think) fly thru the air on the cast with 25# flouro.

I wouldn't throw a big bait that didn't float on braid or flouro. It needs to be more forgiving for me. :D

Try this knot with braid (Highseas Braid at Tacklewarehouse). I've been using it since Oct 07 with no problems what so ever. I use it on Jigs and Swimbaits including the Lunker Punker.

I've found that the San Diego knot works the best of all the knots that exist. I use 65#. With the way its tied, the tag end comes out the top instead of the buttom with most knots.

With the tag com'in out the top there is no abrasion Breakoff because of the tag between the knot and the hook.

Just a recommendation to try.... :D
