I do not own a burner 7 to 1 where , when , what baits do you guys use them on , do you think they are a must have ? how much power do you sacrifice for speed ?

No expert here by any stretch But ....I have used mine a lot with jigs. I still use the rod to move the bait and find that when i get bit I am able to take up line very quickly prior to setting the hook. Still playing with it 8)

Alot of people like to use it with Frogs! I dont have one and probably wont get one. And yes you do lose some power with the additional speed. 6.2, 6.3, and 6.4:1 gear ratios are deffinately the way to go IMHO

I was told that the best use was after you fish the zone of strike it is faster to retrieve the bait to re-cast!

I use them for jigs, helps get the slack out and into the boat faster, spinnerbaits: great for burning them just under the surface to throw a wake, and yes swimbaits too, using a slow retrieve to give the lure the right look and then when I get hooked up with a fish it helps to get'em to hte boat as quickly as possible.
Whether you need to own one or not is your choice.

I use a Shimano DHSV for buzzbaits and it does allow for getting the bait up and churning very fast. I think it makes a difference with that one bait.

But not on the reels having oversized gearing--with the oversized gears you get an increase in both speed and power. An example would be the Curado 200DHSV. See how low that gearbox hangs below the reelfoot--it houses an extra large drive gear!

Used best for items like worms, jigs, carolina rigs which need to be presented and slack taken up quick.

I switch my spinnerbait reel from a 7 to 1 to a 6.2 to 1 and I get more fish.

Frogs, buzzbaits, jigs, walk the dog baits, and any bait that I typically have slack line while fishing.

All you need to do is control your retrieve to the proper speed when fishing. They are absolutely the $hit for controlling the fish. I won't fish without them.
